DS is at a behavioural unit (for school) but he has just been diagnosed with ASD, can I get him out of there?

We are on holiday, so sorry if I don't answer.

DS is 11, has just been diagnosed with ASD (such a long, long process). He is almost 12, he is in Yr 7 at school. He was transferred to a behavioural unit for the last few months, he is due to return there in September. His behaviour was really bad, yes. However, they were never willing to accept anything was wrong until it was proved, even SENCO wasn't great about it (in all fairness, it has a very high percentage of SN children, so I suppose their focus was on children who have been diagnosed).

When he had to leave, they said that he'd be allowed to go to a separate secondary school, but wouldn't be able to take him back. It was then changed to him being allowed to go back but after completing the whole behavioural program. He wasn't going to do the program, it was going to be his official school, which it is, but he has been put into the program as he still young.

Now he has his diagnosis, does anyone know if there's any chance of him being able to back to his school sooner, without completing the program (even though that was written up?) the LA said to me that he was only allowed at the unit, but do I have any hope? Thanks

If you report your own post you can ask for it to be transferred to SN children. Hopefully they can help you.

Same thing happening with my son. He's still in his PRU poor sod. There just isn't anywhere else suitable for him. His behaviour has worsened since being there and the other kids can be bullies. Not nice at all.

Have you applied for an EHCP? If not I would start this process as he should have his needs assessed in view of his dx and placement considered.

Having a dx of ASD isn't going to mean he is suddenly going to be able to cope in MS. Even if they put in 1:1, which is about the most they can do, he may not manage the busy environment and multitude of different teachers with subtly differing expectations that he may not be able to read.

Are there ASD Resource Bases in your area? One of these may be much more appropriate than a PRU, but you are unlikely to get one without an EHCP.

If school didn't cope with him pre diagnosis I'd be very sceptical about their ability even with a diagnosis. Is a different secondary with better sen support avaliable?
