To wonder why casual or even overt racism is acceptable on MN?

Just this - there's a thread in Site Stuff asking the same but I'd like to ask the wider MN audience why is this fine. Just in the recent past we've had a poster questioning an 'apparent' adam's apple on one of the greatest female athletes and another poster hellbent on telling us that Police violence on black men isn't a 'thing'. In these threads HQ HAS left the thread to stand and in their words " we felt that the discussion that followed was interesting and informative and educational for the OP." Why is that? If I started a thread about Taylor Swift being an attention seeking whore or a thread about ADHD children just needing a telling off I'd be deleted within the hour. Why the fuck do other MNetters think ethnic minorities are up for grabs? Why does HQ think the same? In the thread on Site Stuff there's only an apology. This sort of shit happens repeatedly. Why?

OP posts:

See, do we think littleprincess should be moded or told she's talking rubbish? Call me Mr Daily Mail but I think the latter.

How am I talking rubbish for speaking up against the horrendous racial and xenophobic abuse on other threads?

I was on the Serena thread. It was actually very upsetting that regular posters were excusing the glaringly obvious racist remarks posted by the OP as being "just a bit daft, no harm intended".
MNHQ took a shamefully long time to pull the thread although they did apologise for it and say it was a mistake due to new staff.

ghostyslovesheep · 23/07/2016 11:25

yes 'whitesplaining' is needed

It's disgraceful the amount of racists and xenophobic shite that's allowed to stand

when I was 17 I was 'felt up' on a picket line - when I complained to the shop steward I was told it was 'my job, as a women, to educate men on how to behave' I replied 'Is it FUCK' and promptly left the T+G

It's not BME peoples job to educate ignorant racists

UmbongoUnchained · 23/07/2016 11:42

Whitesplaining is when a white person tells me I'm not allowed to be offended by something and here's how/why it's ok to say those things. It is absolutely NOT needed.

AntiqueSinger · 23/07/2016 12:32

I can remember when it was still sort of rare for threads to be deleted on MN. Now it seems to happen all the time.
A lot of the time people are accused of being 'goady' ie., deliberately trying to stir up contention on a thread, when actually, all they are doing is presenting an alternative but unwelcome point of view that goes against the majority. Then their posts are deleted.

queenMab99 · 23/07/2016 12:39

I think some posts are better left, so that the usually, ignorant, misinformed poster can be corrected, and their arguments destroyed by intelligent responses. However when it turns into a mudslinging insult fest, then it should be removed,

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 12:44

Lol - and it continues...

AdjustableWench · 23/07/2016 12:57

Here's a good example of whitesplaining.
In this context, apparently, casual and overtly racist remarks are just an 'unwelcome point of view'.
As opposed to a part of a systematic process of oppression.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 23/07/2016 13:03

Littleprincess, I think it was misinterpreted that the quote in your post was your comment.

I was open-mouthed at how long the SW thread stayed up. I wonder if disengenuous racism on mn is where disengenuous disabilism was for a long time? It is only within the last month that disabilist posts have been held to extra scrutiny by mnhq.

littleprincesssara · 23/07/2016 13:12

One thing that astounds me is that the extreme right wingers often don't even make any pretence of conducting a civil conversation, they jump straight to shouting and personal abuse/name-calling.

Personally I try to always remain calm and stick to the facts. I don't always succeed, sometimes I do lose my temper (in the face of extreme provocation), but I don't understand people who's first response to seeing an opinion they disagree with it so start chucking personal abuse around and ignore the actual subject itself.

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 13:17

No words

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 13:20

In this case (the 3 posts we are referring to) MNHQ fucked up and took an inexplicably long time to remove offensive, racist threads - let's be clear, not opinions, out and out slurs against minorities.

I don't need little princess or anyone else telling me what I read was an unwelcome but valid difference of opinion - it was out and out hate speech.

MNHQ have apologised, so we are not in the wrong, misinterpreting or overreacting.

And if you think we are, then I respectfully suggest you fuck off Flowers

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 13:24

And MNHQ silence on this topic, this thread and the inadequate responses on my thread in site stuff just strengthens my opinion of how badly the three threads in question have been handled

AntiqueSinger · 23/07/2016 13:36

Fgs sake I'm biracial! My father is black. My husband is. My children are. This is exactly what I'm talking about. You have misinterpreted my post.

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 13:41

Nope - merely presenting an alternate viewpoint.....

QuiteLikely5 · 23/07/2016 13:47

Is it not best to completely ban any discussion on ones race? That would solve this problem.

AntiqueSinger · 23/07/2016 14:03

Unnecessary CrazyDuchess. I am willing to bet I have unfortunately been as much, if not more, a focus of racist remarks as you.

And no I was not referring to threads including outright blantant racism with the intention of deliberately provoking. But to topics in general which are sensitive and for which giving an alternative view is shouted down. I have seen a lot of these. One I was on was the Amber heard domestic violence thread. Some quite awful views were expressed. I spent a lot of time pointing out that just because a man is famous doesn't mean isn't violent. The thread was pulled. People were upset. I felt it was better to have it stand as many many good and valid myths around DV were exposed as nonsense.

As for the racial issues. I personally prefer them to be debated. I hate the thought of racist people thinking they are justified freedom of speech martyrs because every time they talk they are shut down.

AntiqueSinger · 23/07/2016 14:05

Wrong wording. Many invalid myths around DV were exposed as nonsense.

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 14:24

Lol - your experience of racism is worse that mine antique?? How shall we compare notes? And who will be final arbiter? That's when I know this thread is going no where.

At no point did I say that there wasn't a place for a debate about racial issues - in fact I would welcome it!

As I have said over and over, my complaint is purely the mishandling by MNHQ of the 3 threads in question which were not to incite a debate or conversation - they were outright disgusting.

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 14:33

I will just leave it that my argument is not with other posters - just MNHQ and their reporting and deletion processes. I have spent far too long on this thread as it is.

AntiqueSinger · 23/07/2016 14:44

Honestly. Duchess. Yes I can see that was silly to say. Sorry for offending. I was pointing out that I too have experienced racism and as such understand how disgusting and distressing it is. I felt strange being in the peculiar position of defending myself against condoning racism. That actually is more upsetting than a random racist thread posted by an obvious imbecile. This whole brexit thing has not helped me feel calm about this issue either. I too shall leave the thread now.

CrazyDuchess · 23/07/2016 14:54

I too feel the same way Flowers

AntiqueSinger · 23/07/2016 17:54

ThanxFlowers
