Meeting up with other parents over the holidays

or indeed at other times, the stress of it. Trying to chat while not really knowing what to say, and at the same time dealing with the children. I'd happily have their child over to play but why do they want us all to go out together somewhere?

Probably because they want the adult company.

I quite look forward to having a rest from the school playground chat over the holidays, but I work, the dcs do clubs so they have a social life. Six weeks without talk about school etc is bliss.

Maybe so they have some friends.

Ahh I think it's nice that people make the effort. Yes, the only thing you THINK you have in common, is that your kids are in the same year at school, but you might like the same music, into cooking. I wouldn't say I am best friends with any of the mums from school, but I have made some nice friends from arranged 'mum dates'. You are going to see these people most days for all of your kids primary school life, so why not make the effort and make some new friends.

Maybe they enjoy it? I've made many friends this way over the years so I'm always up for a meetup with other families. It's nice being part of a group of families that all get on well, and it gives lots of potential for ad-hoc bits of childcare, sharing lifts to clubs and activities etc as well as friendships.

I find it much easier to have a child over for a play date Once I know the mum a bit and have got to know their child and their rules.

Plus it's nice to get to know people a bit better, the more the merrier where friendship is concerned

I made a friend this way, felt very awkward at first, but they persisted. Seems we can't do anything without the kids. They're good mates, but sometimes, I'd like to suggest an adult only evening.

How do you normally make friends? Genuine question, not being sarcastic.

I wouldn't send my child with some random person, but I understand what you are saying this is why my 5yr old has only recently had someone over but that's because I got to know the mum, I would of had lots of his friends over beforehand but it meant parents tagging along, I'm anti social small talk is hard and Not interested in being friends with everyone of my child's friends parents.
