Still can't decide on an Italian girl's name.
If a girl were to be called Elisabetta, how would you pronoun Elisa.
I would say E-liss-a but am worried in the UK it might be more Eliza or E- Lisa
what do you think? Ta

In Italian it would sound more like E-lee-za.

I immediately said E-Lisa

Alyssa would be A-liss-ah

Most people will naturally pronounce it E-lis-a, some E-Liza.

If that bothers you, then is probably best to find another name.

I'd say it El_eeza

Italian would be be E-leez-a.

It should be E - lees - a but you will probably have to correct a lot of people who will say it Eliza (I assume you're in the uk).
I nearly called my daughter Marisa. I knew a girl with this name when I was little and I loved it. It was pronounced Marie-sa. However she was constantly correcting people who pronounced it "Marissa" (like Melissa). Decided against it for this reason.

I read it as e-liss-a (Soft e, like elephant).

Then i'd wonder if it should be Eliza. Like Eliza Do-Little.

Then i'd ask

El - eesa

Child called this in one of my kids' classes, she says it Eh-Lee-Sah

Name your child what ever you want. School friends will learn how to say it before they ever read it.

Teachers will learn quickly

And by the time she is going to interviews she will have learnt how to correct without getting upset.

My dc has a name that most white British people mispronounce. Because their brain fills in the gap and they think it is a different more common name. Interestingly people from other countries read his name exactly how it is. Because they pronounce what they see not what they think they see (like marie-sa vs Marissa above. Fwiw I went to school with a marissa. Can't recall how it was spelt)

I would keep associating it with a research/medical test known as an ELISA (acronym) but that's fairly niche knowledge.

I would pronounce it as Eh-Lee-Sah but Elsa is such a popular name at the moment because of Frozen that I would worry people would be constantly annoying you by mistaking Elisa for Elsa as there's only one letter difference. Something to consider.

In my mind the single s means you pronounce it like Lisa, if it had a double s I'd pronounce it E-liss-a.

Eh-LEE-sa. If you want it to be eh-LISS-a or e-LISS-a you need two S's.

But I would change spelling or name because everyone will say it differently and that would bug me! I get my name spelt wrongly (like Anne instead of Ann) but at least it doesn't sound different. My parents used to have to correct it all the time and now I do, and i would say my way of spelling is more the norm!
