WWYD car parked on our drive

Marsaday · 19/07/2016 21:48

Some complete asshat has left their car parked on our drive.

It has been there at least since my OH got home at 4.30, but could have been there all day.
Have phoned 101 and police say not reported stolen but they won't do anything as the car is on private land and not blocking us in. It's not a car that we recognise as belonging to neighbours and we're not near a hospital, station, airport etc.
We have currently parked across the drive preventing said car from leaving and left our phone number on the window. However, as we have a baby and a toddler our phones are on silent at night.
WIBU to leave the car blocked in until morning?
Or how can we get the car moved?

Just as an aside - I do wonder what they'd do if the car had disappeared when they came back to collect it? Outrage at the fact the dumped car was gone? Confusion?

Hippywannabe · 20/07/2016 07:36

Is it still there this morning?

ScarlettDarling · 20/07/2016 07:39

Anything happen overnight?

lalalalaa · 20/07/2016 07:40

Love a parking thread!

llhj · 20/07/2016 07:45

Here in NI, plenty of people would still be looking under that car for an explosive device. This is very bizarre. Must be an error somewhere.

Deelovelock · 20/07/2016 07:46

I used to work in a police control room and have had calls about things like this before. I would call the police back and say you realise it's not stolen, but is there any way they can contact the registered keeper and ask them if there is a problem, or can they move the car? I would have tried to help if it were me. Not guaranteed of course, there may be no contact details available, but worth a shot.

icclemunchy · 20/07/2016 07:49

Can't believe the amount of people saying if it's not blocking you in what's the problem. I'm disabled if someone parked on my drive I'd be fucked and stuck in my car. Hence why I have a house with a drive (and the extra costs to have said house with drive!)

teawamutu · 20/07/2016 07:50

Place marking. Love parking threads, it's something about the mixture of utter cheek, outrageous suggestions and pious 'well someone parked in front of my house for four years and it didn't bother meee'.

Can I check something though? Went to visit elderly (dying) relative in nursing home a few weeks ago. car park unusually full. Parked - I promise - totally legally, well away from dropped curbs etc but outside a house. Came back to a note saying NICE PARKING on the windscreen. It was, but I think the smiley may have been PA. Confused WIBU?

winewolfhowls · 20/07/2016 07:51

Well I never knew the garage could drop off your car after an mot, I always collect it. My mind is blown

Newyearnewbrain · 20/07/2016 07:53

For the love of...
Someone tell me what's happened to this car please. Also, place marking.

Bestthingever · 20/07/2016 07:54

I can't believe it's not illegal to do this.

Marsaday · 20/07/2016 07:54

The car is still there.

AntiHop · 20/07/2016 07:54

The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that they've got the wrong drive. There are websites where people can rent other people's parking spaces. Perhaps they've rented a nearby space.

SoupDragon · 20/07/2016 07:55

Bird seed. Definitely birdseed.

SoupDragon · 20/07/2016 07:56

You could probably encourage foxes overnight with some food scraps on the roof.

SoupDragon · 20/07/2016 07:58

the OP has stated that car is not in fact blocking her drive.

It is blocking her from using her driveway.

MissDuke · 20/07/2016 07:59

I reckon its a mistake too, albeit a very annoying one! Op I am sure you don't need me to tell you that damaging the car would land you in a world of trouble and what is the point in making it difficult for them to leave when presumably you just want them gone! I agree with pp who said they are probably on the wrong street. I also agree with the pp who said ring the police back and politely ask if they can contact the registered keeper. Good luck!

Togaparties · 20/07/2016 08:00

You actually need a special tool (or a tyre guage if she has one!) nowadays or risk damaging the valve

What absolute tosh. Nor would you damage the wheel.

Marsaday · 20/07/2016 08:02

The car is ON MY DRIVE completely and entirely. in front on my garage. Wouldn't it be a shame if the car got scratched when I get my bike out later...

However the car is no longer blocked in because OH has left for work and had to drive, he works in the middle of nowhere with no public transport.

I very much doubt it is an honest mistake. There ARE no other driveways in the surrounding streets that you could mistake it for.

Bestthingever · 20/07/2016 08:04

I can't believe it's still there. Have you knocked on your neighbours doors?

LittleCandle · 20/07/2016 08:04

We live on a street with a primary school at the end. Lazy parents bring their kids to school by car every day (catchment area is less than 800 metres, so easily within walking distance). We had a woman block our drive, with the car in it, a couple of weeks ago. We asked her nicely to move and were told to f* off (her kids were in the car...) So we asked her not so nicely to move, pointing out that she was breaking the law and were told she could park where the hell she liked. So we took a photo of her registration and called the police.

Meantime, she had decided we were being threatening (having said we were calling the police) and called them to report us. The cops arrived about half an hour or so later, to say we were quite in the right, that they were aware of the parking problems in the street and to say that the woman, who had given her name etc to them over the phone, had been warned that if she was still there when they arrived, they would be charging her and that she was getting a verbal warning this time and that it was going to be noted down, as she had stupidly admitted to doing this. She even admitted that she was parked on a white line, by a dropped kerb and ON A SPEED BUMP...

Hope the car is gone by now, OP, and that you charged them big time for their use of your drive.

shazzarooney999 · 20/07/2016 08:09

Keep it blocked in and remove your number and try and avoid driving so your car is blocking it for longer, and try and go out so when they knock your not in or dont answer the door, try this for a couple of days and they will never do it again.

SpringerS · 20/07/2016 08:10

Do you have gates on your drive? If it was me I'd lock the gates behind the car. If I didn't have room to swing the gates closed because of where the car is parked, I'd actually dismantle them and reassemble them closed behind the car. Then I'd put a bike lock on them to keep them shut. And if the driver eventually shows up and queries it, I'd simply say that I'd had to start locking my front gate because of a problem with trespassers!

NoFuchsGiven · 20/07/2016 08:12

I love a good parking thread!

strongswans · 20/07/2016 08:13

Can one of your neighbours not block it in for you? Especially seeing as they don't have drives.
