To give up bras for good?

BleakBetty · 18/07/2016 21:26

I am sick to death of uncomfortable, painful, pretty damn unnecessary bras especially in this heat!

I have NEVER found a comfortable bra. Ever! And I can't afford a super pricy one either.

So, I've given up! I've worn a bandeau thing for a tiny bit of nipple coverage for the last week and I'm actually loving bra-free life. My boobs aren't particularly large so I figure I can get away with it - although one of my friends thinks it's incredibly odd and suspects I'm a weirdo Grin.

So I'm wondering - AIBU? And have any of you given up with the hassle?!

Even if you are small boobed your breasts will sag in time if they are unsupported. Boobs have no natural support at all.
I used to believe this but there's actually no truth to that whatsoever, a bra doesn't stop your boobs from sagging and vice versa. That's just ageing, having children (etc.) I'm afraid.

I'm an A cup and completely gave up on wearing a bra a couple of months ago after wearing padded ones for years following some cruel bullying for my chest size. Feels brilliant to finally feel that comfortable in my own body but I can see how anything above a B cup and it would be a struggle to go without. Just do what's most comfortable for you Smile

Go for it. You are lucky to have the option. Or maybe try to find and afford just one really nice one for when you have to wear a more smart/fancy outfit, job interviews, weddings etc.

I'm a 30J currently (breastfeeding size) and normally 30FF, so only take my bra off to sleep or shower and even there I have to hold them up. If I didn't wear one I think I'd need a wheelbarrow to push them round in!

littleprincesssara · 19/07/2016 01:48

Never worn one. I wear those heart shaped sticky nipple covers (a few quid in Primark) when I need to.

Thecatgotmytongue · 19/07/2016 01:54

I hate bras, but am also large (34g), so can't go without much, although I do sometimes around the house.

Liz09 · 19/07/2016 02:21

I don't wear a bra at home, or often in winter (when it's cold enough to wear layers). But I do wear bras otherwise. Strictly Calvin Klein as they are the best and they are worth the money. I will never go back to anything else.

Even when I'm not content with completely free-boobing at home (if we have family/friends over), I will put on one of those Calvin Klein crop top things (no cups, no underwire etc) and it's like wearing a cloud.

notamummy10 · 19/07/2016 02:23

I only wear 'proper' bras when I go out, otherwise it's sport bras all the way! I'm not particularly big- 38D or 38DD if it's a balcony bra!

VioletBam · 19/07/2016 02:26

I've never worn a bra aside from a few experiments with them in my teens OP so I think YANBU.

I'm small busted too though. Mine are actually still pert and I'm 43. I wonder if that's just genetics though?

GreatFuckability · 19/07/2016 03:07

I think I must be a complete freak, cos i always wear a bra. even in bed. i feel weird and highly uncomfortable without one. I woke up after major surgery and the first thing i asked was where my bra was so i could put it back on!

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 19/07/2016 07:26

Stopped wearing a bra over a year ago when I thought, who am I kidding there is FA to support. It fab, esp in the heat when the bra band used to be a damp sweaty mess. I'm pregnant now though and the buggers have tripled in weight and are growing so reluctantly I will need something soon I guess. Certainly I will need something to attach layers of breastpads too after birth if last time is anything to go by...

Thecatgotmytongue · 19/07/2016 13:24

Is there a sort of crop top that can be worn under strappy things for big boobs? Like a sports bra? Everything for big boobs is so ugly! And has wires that stick into me .. Even when fitted by Bravissimo.

DerelictMyBalls · 19/07/2016 13:27

If a bra is painful to wear, it is the wrong size.

Lweji · 19/07/2016 13:29

Apparently it's good for breasts not to wear a bra.

I never did when I had small breasts. And often go free when at home.

But uneven and heavy breasts mean I feel better in a bra when out and about.

Dawndonnaagain · 19/07/2016 14:12

Yanbu. However, I'm a 38E. Not happening here!

squoosh · 19/07/2016 14:15

I'm a 36G.

My bras make my life a hell of a lot more comfortable!

FairyDogMother11 · 19/07/2016 14:19

My friend used to wear two bras at all times...that I thought weird. However I go braless a lot, I am only a B cup at my very largest and particularly in the summer when it is hot, I avoid extra layers. I wear a bikini top under vests in the summer if needs must!

LokisUnderpants · 19/07/2016 14:24

So happy to find this thread. I read an article last week that studied the uselessness of the bra in terms of saggage and decided to ditch mine. The freedom is amazing. I always wear cami vests anyway but not having the girls restricted is joyous.

FionaThePrincess · 19/07/2016 14:38

I've worn bras religiously since I had buds, and I'm still sagging regardless (mid-40s). I don't believe wearing a bra or not makes any difference to levels of sagginess.

However, my overall body shape is much nicer when I wear a bra than when I don't. I resized myself last year using the bra intervention thing on mumsnet and ended up with bras in a totally different size to what I was wearing. What a revelation. Now I can wear bras all day and barely notice - in the proper size they're so comfortable.

As a PP said, Freya bras are comfortable. I also like Fantasize bras.

GrumpyMummy123 · 19/07/2016 17:08

Yanbu I'm another jealous one. At 34H and currently only owning 2 bras that are comfortable I really wish I could take a break from wearing a bra!!! Although comfortable just so darn hot and sweaty and constantly washing them. It didn't help when got into a water fight with DH and DD last night and soggy bra which because of the scaffolding like padding just didn't dry and was horrible.

GrandMarmoset · 19/07/2016 17:10

My whole family have decent sized boobs and view bras as instruments of torture. On the whole, unsupported boobs sag theory, I'm not convinced. In my mid fifties and having breastfed for two years solidly, I'm still firmer than most teenagers. Could be genes of course, but I do wonder. My friends are astounded when I tell them that I don't where one. None of them had noticed.

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 19/07/2016 17:11

If your bra feels like an instrument of torture you can't be wearing the right size. I don't even notice my bra when it's on.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/07/2016 17:16

Yanbu , bras are left over corsetry nonsense from days long gone !

badtime · 19/07/2016 17:16

Bunty speaks the truth.

Bras are only instruments of torture if you are wearing the wrong size and/or style.

How to find the right size can be quite counter-intuitive, though (e.g. if your straps are digging in they might be too loose and moving about rather than too tight).

badtime · 19/07/2016 17:17

But the OP (or anyone else) INBU to not wear one. Whatever you like.

Gingerlilly · 19/07/2016 17:20

I hate wearing bras and like you have NEVER found a comfortable one. The only reason I wear one is so that I don't have nipples pointing out all over the place through t shirts. Usually as soon as I get in I take my bra off, swear at it and throw it across the bedroom. If only a comfortable bra could be invented. Sometimes when I get in and I am in a bad mood my husband reminds me I still have my bra on and then I know why I am feeling in a bad mood, it's the bra every time. Hate them. My daughter thinks I am rubbish and not a proper person for not having a glamorous array of bras.

Gottagetmoving · 19/07/2016 17:20

I would give up bras if I had small breasts but I am 34F and mine are not perky any more. I would look lumpy and yukky.
