To not want to go holiday in the south west?

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 20:33

Mostly because I live in the south west, so it wouldn't seem much like a holiday.

Me and bf have been talking about going on holiday. To begin with, he suggested going to Devon or Cornwall for a week. I wasn't wild about the idea, but thought if we could find a cheap week somewhere it could be fun. So I had a bit of a Google, and was horrified to see that it was going to cost £1k+, even to stay in a caravan park type place. So I suggested maybe a week in France, as for less money we could get a ferry and a nice place with a pool on airbnb, and maybe the weather would actually be nice (it has pissed down with rain fairly consistently in the SW for the last few years).

So that was the plan, but we didn't book it as we've been waiting to find out when we could definitely go because of other commitments. That's now sorted, but he's decided he doesn't want to go to France because of the risk of terror attacks (he lives in London!). So it was back to the drawing board, and I suggested places in Spain and Croatia that were coming in at about £500 each (me and my dd, him and his dd), including flights, so a total of £1k.

But no, after me wasting fuck knows how many hours looking at places abroad, he's said he wants to go to Devon, or Cornwall. The places he's looking at in Devon are about 45 mins away from where I lived for 12 years. My mum had a holiday house in Cornwall for years until last year, and I'd often go down there with the DC if we had nothing else to do, but it never really felt like a holiday.

He says going to Devon would be 'perfect'. I'm imagining forking out £500 to go up the road, and probably forking out loads of money to do inside stuff because it's too rainy for the beach. There wouldn't be a pool, which is instant free entertainment for two six year olds.

We seem to have diametrically opposed ideas of what constitutes a holiday, but am I being a princess? Fully prepared to be told I am. Not sure what the compromise here would be.

I have looked at holidays this week in Devon vs. abroad and abroad is simply cheaper. Plus I feel that you don't get the same feeling of being on holiday when you stay in the uk. And of course the weather is unreliable.

However it's not me you need to convince .

Have you looked at compromise places (although not cheap!?) Isles of Scilly, Scotland, Jersey, etc

Good luck !

GnomeDePlume · 17/07/2016 21:45

If you want wild beaches, surfing, fantastic food, moorland walks, streams for the kids to swim in, open air theatre, crabbing and rock pooling...

But with the best will in the world those things are crap in the rain.

It isnt a case of foreign means cultural desert, British means 'quality' experience. You can have excellent scenery, food, culture but with better weather even just over the channel.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 21:47

We haven't started the compromise negotiations yet. IMO though, we'd have many of the same problems wherever we went in the UK, though granted it would be a change for me.If we have nice weather and a pool, I think it will be a lot more relaxing, and cheaper.

If he wants to stay in the UK, there are lots of good places you can go that aren't the South West. How about the Isle of Wight, or the coast of Norfolk or Suffolk, or Wales or Scotland?

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 21:51

Yes they have passports, and he does have a pretty crap relationship with his ex. I don't think she would stop their dd from going on holiday, but one of the excuses reasons he gave for not going to France was that she might say no at the last minute because of the terror attacks.

Yes the girls get on really well with each other.

My bil has invited us to Cornwall for a week. It would take longer to drive than it would to pop over to Europe, plus the weather will probably be better in Europe. Croatia sounds amazing. I hear the beaches are fab. Go your different ways for holidays.

GabsAlot · 17/07/2016 21:56

why does it have to be in the sw btw?

i do laugh at people when they say im goingon holiday and it turns out to be half an hour away i guess they got cheap a deal but i agree wouldnt be a holiday

spent a day in cratia lovely place

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 21:59

It has to be the SW because that's what he wants to do.

I classify any holiday in the UK as "same shot, different place."

I am currently on holiday in Pembrokeshire and moving onto Cornwall next week. Same shot, different place.

My excuse is that DD has used my holiday budget on one month in Japan, flying out one week after the referendum and when the pound crashed. FML.

VanillaSugar · 17/07/2016 22:01

Same shit same shit damn you auto correct.

CalleighDoodle · 17/07/2016 22:13

Guernsey?

Yanbu btw. He sounds uncompromising and unreasonable. Youve given options. 45 minutes is a good commute to work, not a holiday.

WanderingStar1 · 17/07/2016 22:23

Just back from a week in Spain - there is no comparison! I also live in the SW and we've had loads of lovely day trips and weekends in Weymouth, Exmouth and Newquay etc (and sometimes been rained off like you wouldn't believe!). This was our first trip abroad since before having DCs - and we're lucky as my sister has an apartment on the Costa Del Sol Grin so it was defo cheaper than some of these cottages in Devon and Cornwall, even with flights and car hire. But the main thing is the weather. We've had lots of weekend breaks and Sun Holidays etc and always had to work with the rain (and had fun) - but this was amazing!! We had six days of blazing sun from dawn to dusk, went to 2 waterparks (all day fun, you wouldn't do it here!) swam in the pools by the complex most evenings, and at various beaches throughout the week. The children had an absolute ball, and although they've also had fun in this country too, I think I have rediscovered the travel bug! I have to admit we did nothing cultural (except eat paella.....) but the weather made it all so easy! Stick to your guns, OP!

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 22:23

I am a bit pissed off that I've spent God knows how many hours over the last 2/3 months looking for holidays abroad, then today he makes it quite clear that he only wants to go to Devon or Cornwall. We've gone full circle.

It has to be the SW because that's what he wants to do

I'd be going on holiday without him then! Why should he get the final say?!

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 22:28

Rollon - but I suppose it could be argued that I shouldn't get the final say either.

Although clearly I should, because I'm right Grin

He doesn't sound like he'd be much fun to spend a holiday with........

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/07/2016 22:38

How old are the girls or did I miss that one?

CalleighDoodle · 17/07/2016 22:43

It isnt the same. You are offering a sound reason and options. Many option. He is refusing to fiscuss it. Id be reconsidering the whole relationship Grin

Porg · 17/07/2016 22:44

I've lived in Cornwall. We barely left the house on back holiday weekend. Traffic jams everywhere and packed beaches, fuck that.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 22:57

They are both 6, fivegomad

SpanielLedWeaning · 17/07/2016 23:00

I can see both sides of this. I grew up in the SW and my parents are still there. I love going back and doing all the tourist stuff with DS that I did when I was young. But I wouldn't be willing to pay lots to stay there and I definitely would be avoiding peak holiday times (especially bank holidays!)

A vote for Jersey here. Beautiful beaches and technically still in the SW.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/07/2016 23:02

Second Channel Islands or maybe Isle of Wight?

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/07/2016 23:10

Are those places not going to be just as rammer jammered over the bank holiday?

OP posts:
apatheticfallacy · 17/07/2016 23:12

The Scilly isles are in the SW and have freakishly warm weather. I doubt they're a hot target for terrorist stacks ether. Not sure how expensive they are and I've no idea what it's like there - Blue Peter did a programme on them in the 90s and I've kind of wanted to go ever since Grin

squoosh · 17/07/2016 23:17

Yes the Scilly Isles on a sunny day look pretty sweet.

To not want to go holiday in the south west?
