To ask what would be in your perfect guestroom and how do I be a good host?

PILs are visiting for a month (from overseas) to meet their first grandchild. They are staying with us. We're turning our bedroom into a guestroom for them. It's a small room but has an ensuite, king-size bed, a wardrobe and chest of drawers.

How do I make it comfortable and welcoming? I've bought some 300TC bedlinen. Should I buy new towels? Are white towels better? How many towels per person? Which products should I put in the ensuite?

Obviously I'll empty the wardrobe and chest of drawers and deep-clean everything.

There is a small table and a lamp but no space for a bedside table.

Any tips for making them feel at ease?

I'd put a starter bottle of shower gel shampoo and conditioner in there but I would expect to buy my own.

Can you make sure there is a thin blanket on the bottom of the bed and a spare sheet or two in the wardrobe? Lots of people have different blanket preferences so it's be nice to meet those.

Are there plug sockets next to the bed? I often go on my phone on an evening and that's also when it needs charging.

I'd put two bath sheets and two bath towels in along with a hand towel and put new in each week. They may bring their own.

Radio.

Is there a TV? If so fresh batteries in the remote.

Case of fresh flowers.

Could you put a very small shelf each side of the bed? I wear glasses and need them on constantly so I'd be a bit frustrated if I couldn't have them next to me while I sleep.

That sounds perfect. I don't think you need new towels. What does your DH think? They are his parents after all.

The most important thing is that you make them feel welcome rather than the physical things iyswim

I think some people feel more comfortable If they are treated as part of the household rather than formal guests. I.e. Invited to make you own drinks and breakfast or whatever.

White towels make me paranoid I'll get make up or similar on them - and esp panic during my period! So I prefer colour. Otherwise sounds lovely

Maybe a couple of well chosen books or magazines left in the room

Hooks on back of door, dressing gowns, bottle of shampoo, soap, spare toilet rolls, books, magazines, information from tourist office of local places to visit, empty drawer, coat hangers in cupboard. A bunch of fresh flowers in a vase but not too perfumed and check allergies. Clear towels and whole room clean and fresh... Just image what you like. They very lucky.

You've a newborn and you're giving up your bedroom and ensuite for PILs for a MONTH? You are crazy.

Depending on space obviously but a dressing table or mirror so they can dry hair/apply make up.
My PIL stayed after our children were born. Having an extra hairdryer in their room was helpful as well as slippers and a sodoko book. (Things my MIL appreciates!) my DH likes his own space, so having a TV in the room was good when my parents stayed.
The ensuite is stocked with new toothbrushes, toothpastes, shower gels, shampoos (all travel sizes) Guests can just help themselves to what they fancy.

I so don't get why you're giving up your bedroom. Is this the only bedroom you have?

This is surely a wind up? We had our parents stay after the birth of DC1 as we lived overseas. They had an inflatable mattress in the lounge. No way would I have given up my bed after just giving birth.
If you are genuine, the only other thing I can think of is a kettle, teabags etc so they can make a hot drink in the guest room.

I would just hope for a clean and tidy room really. Sure, flowers and a couple of books/magazines to read would be nice. And slippers and a fluffy towel and dressing gown. And a radio or TV. And a nice reed diffuser of course. But not necessary!

You must have plenty space if you can empty your whole wardrobe!

You'd need a change of bedclothes and spare towels. (I'd leave them in the room and when you ask for the dirty set, let them know where the clean set is... You have enough to be doing without making their bed!)

Oh God, last time there was a thread like this someone ended up getting bollocked for not providing a kettle, a toaster, a hairdryer and a kitchen sink for her house guests (note: her house guests. Apparently men don't have to think about this kind of shot)

I'd just provide clean bedding and towels. If they need anything else I'm sure they can ask.

How new is the grandchild? I think you're mad to be giving up your room and they may well awkward that you have! Are they particularly fussy as you're going to a hell of a lot of effort and Expense?

The one thing that I always look for when I stay with another person is a mirror. But I have very unruly hair that I need to keep tabs on!

Wifi code?

Maybe a few first aid basics like plasters and paracetamol.

New bed linen & towels?

I would clean the room, put fresh bed linen on and make sure there were clean towels and enough loo roll in the bathroom.

They are family. Tell them where everything is and let them muck in.
