AIBU?

AIBU to be irritated when people don't RTFT, or just the OP's posts or at least the last few replies

before wading in?

Am I?

Or is it perfectly reasonable to want to bang my head against the desk?

I know people haven't got the time or inclination to read 8 pages of stuff, but your answer that you have spent time and care crafting and typing (yeah, right) is a pretty pointless waste of time if the OP has admitted they're wrong, or they've added loads of new info or the thread has moved completely sideways.

I know forums have always been like this, but the MN facility to highlight your own and the OP's posts does help. And I do feel sorry for some when they're getting a total kicking when they have actually had the grace to take opinions on board and admit they're wrong.

Just spare a couple of moments to catch up in future, would you please? Ta.

So you aren't filling up a thread with repeated comments.
I disagree with this. If I start a thread and get 200 opinions, most of which tell me they think I'm wrong, then I am informed. So, just because more than one person says the same thing doesn't mean nobody else should repeat that comment because you then get an idea of the spread of opinion iyswim.

There is a difference between 200 "you are wrong (or BU) because..." Comments and 200 "have you cancelled the cheque?" "why don't you cancel the cheque?" "I think you should cancel the cheque" comments.

(Especially when if you'd bothered to read the fucking thread you'd know that the cheque was cancelled at post 100 and people are still suggesting it at post 600)

but you might want to give support to op, you might agree with op
read the op's posts and then post your support, so what if you are repeating what others have said.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2016 12:41

If I agree with what others have said I say so. Acknowledging they have the same opinion as me as you would do in a conversation.

I agree with Sparks Smile
It's simply good manners isn't it?

It's the arrogance of posters that don't RTFT that pisses me off.

"Oh I'm such an important and intelligent person - far more important and intelligent than anyone else on this site - I'm far too important and intelligent to RTFT and no-one else is EVER going to say anything as important and intelligent as me, so I'll post my highly prized views and instructions here; there is no point in reading the thread because no-one else would post anything as important or intelligent as what I will post"

Exaactly this. I don't think my input is so essential that someone might not have already said what I had thought of. I think it's egotistical to assume your comment is so much more important than anyone elses.

I was going to post that I find the arrogance quite astounding. But I see (from reading the thread Halo ) that Eve has already made the point very well and others have concurred.

Sometimes I think we need a box to come up after you press post that says "Are you sure you definitely want to post this? You don't have to post anything you know". I'd find that helpful for other reasons Blush

The ones I dislike (as well as the above) are those that say, "I came on here to tell you you were unreasonable" - based on the thread header. Drives me absolutely mad. Just came on here to tell you that Grin

It's when the post starts with 'I've not RTFT but this is a subject I feel very strongly about so here's my opinion ...'

Why in god's name? This is an anonymous internet forum. No one really cares that much about your opinion unless it is taking all the previous discussion into account.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 16/07/2016 12:56

I read "I've not read the thread but" as

I'm a self important twat

And then I don't feel the rage.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2016 12:58

I really don't understand 'not read the thread but......' I guess it's to prevent people pointing out their point was made hours ago by someone else.

I cant be arsed reading threads, I jump in with my big mouth and spout off, usually

oh well

Report
ssd · 16/07/2016 13:01

and its not that I'm arrogant or too important, its just that I'm a lazy bugger

CBA to RTFT as I have a life outside MN.

Report
thebestfurchinchilla · 16/07/2016 13:05

I answer the OP. it's what I expect others to do when i start a thread. Have no time to read pages of stuff. Not arrogance just not that important to me. If that offends some of you, then don't use MN.

So anyone who takes time to read the thread has no life outside MN. Okaay.

I CBA to get offended about anything on MN these days. Mild irritation maybe. Grin

My usual strategy is to read page 1 then last page and backfill if appropriate to see how it developed. I often lurk rather than respond because I have little fresh input to add or it's just gone off on a tangent of pedantry or people's agendas.

This time I have read the thread as it is under 4 pages of short responses, and I get that those of you who RTFT would appreciate the originality this particular response Grin

This point will be lost on people who don't RTFT, particularly after it has ceased to be on the final page. Shrugs.

But if you haven't read the fucking thread Bestfur, your post is just boring and irrelevant. Is that what you want people to think of your posts? Really? That's not very good for your self-esteem surely

I really do think that you should cancel the cheque.

Lynda My posts are not for other people but in response to the OP who asked the question i am giving my opinion on.

Report
thebestfurchinchilla · 16/07/2016 16:38

So why are you getting so worked up about it if you actually have other important things in your life, it's a chat forum ffs!

Report
thebestfurchinchilla · 16/07/2016 16:41

I'll leave you now to get yourselves worked into a nice lather about MN behaviour and how arrogant I must be that I really don't give MN etiquette that much thought. Have fun.
