To give away DDs things at baby shower?

My friends having a baby shower at the weekend. I'm skint - seriously skint. I can just about afford a card, and I've got plenty of gift bags, but I wondered if I could get away with giving my friend one of DDs teddys/ books?

She has millions of teddies - this one in particular sits in her room with the others but she's never touched it. I would give one of the rustly sensory books as well, or a 'that's not my..' one, so age appropriate. She definitely wouldn't care, or notice in a million years.

I just wonder if it would be hugely obvious what I've done. Obviously there wouldn't be tags on, but they're pretty much brand new. Just don't want to be embarrassed at gift opening time

You're skint - and still finding a nice gift. Do it and don't feel bad for one second!

Plus, it's completely reasonable that you'd remove the tags before gifting, I would.

Absolutely fine, but equally I wouldn't feel bad about not taking a present. All the baby showers I've been to have had some people giving presents and some people not.

Absolutely do it, just be careful you're not re-gifting something given to DD from a mutual friend, particularly anyone who might be at the shower! I wouldn't expect tags etc to be on gifts either.

Why not go to the works or similar, buy a hamper making kit for about £3 and jazz it up into a hamper with the toy, book, maybe some johnsonns bubble bath or similar or something for the mum? Tie with a big bow? If you have a b&m home bargains by you they do baby socks and bits very cheap (eg £1 for 2 pairs) - a friend of mine makes hampers/ gift boxes out of these and sells them at fairs for £££s

I think a nice book as you suggest, wrapped prettily, is much better than a teddy off the shelf for a new baby. It may look fine but will be full of dust mite.

Didn't think about dust mites! Will leave the teddy then and just give a few books.

The hampers a lovely idea, but I was expecting a £2000 payment from student finance yesterday that they've now decided was calculated wrong - there will be no payment and I actually owe them £800 and I got an NHS job offer 4 months ago and still no start date (or wage obviously ). So am literally budgeting down to the last penny. But will bear that in mind for next time as it sounds lovely

I think it's ok if a teddy is nearly new, but SIL once gave a very old, used bunny as a present for one of my children (aged about 2) at christmas and to be honest I'd rather she hadn't bothered or had got something for £1 from the pound store. But if it's nearly new, not worn, should be ok.

Incidentally I have sold good condition soft toys e g Jellycat on ebay before and made a few bob, so if you're seriously skint and your daughter doesn't mind parting with some toys it may be woth considering.

Give the teddy a spruce up with the Hoover nozzle, this and the book will be a lovely gift

Oh no, I would never give something that didn't look brand new! Just checking that things with no tags weren't going to make me a laughing stock at present opening time Have been thinking about eBay, thank you. & good idea re Hoover nozzle

In terms of being careful in case you give away something that was given to you by someone else at the shower, a book is easier to get away with, as you can pretend that you bought it as a gift because your DD loves it so much. It's harder to do that with a teddy.
