It is my 20week scan on Monday and I have told my manager at least 8 times that my scan is in the morning but I would love to have the full day off(I work different days off each week) as me and DP would like to go and do some baby shopping as we are finding out the sex and have been holding off buying anything until this scan! We have just been given the rota and I am down to work the morning shift(I can do) I have told them this and they said that if I don't turn up then I will be called in for a meeting to discuss and may result in a disaplinary
I'm not being unreasonable to be angry at this am I? There's no reason I can't have the day off apart from the fact my managers want the same day off even though they have done for the past 3 weeks!

I had a similar thing and i think you'll find they are not doing anything illegal or wrong per se. Just being meanies.
In my case it got worse and worse though with comments like ''you're pregnant not ill ! '' when i refused newly introduced shifts til 10pm as i was really, really tired.
I think the best thing to do is take it on the chin , but consult your HR or similar citizens advice etc to make sure they abide within the rules in future.

you'll realise some people can get quite bitter or jealous but you must enjoy your pregnancy .

It's not clear- you can say you can do the morning shift? Is it not the same time as the scan? They have to let you have the time off (paid) for your scan.

By asking to have it on your day off, it seems to me you're being more than reasonable.

They have to let you attend the scan - they don't have to give you the day off

I don't get all the stuff about repeatedly talking about how "you'd love the day off to do x y and z"?

Did you put in for leave or did you not? You are entitled to time off for your scan, you are not entitled to the whole day off because you'd enjoy it.

So you asked for the full day and it's not possible, That's the way it goes sometimes

Your still get the time of for your scan and your get to check on baby which is the most important thing.
The baby shopping can be down online in the evening or on another day.

So they've put you on the morning shift and that's when your scan is?

You're legally entitled to have time off for your scan. They cannot discipline you for that.

But you're unreasonable in wanting the whole day off to buy baby things. I had my scan and went back to work.

They have to give you paid time off for the appointment, I'm not clear if the rota enables you to do do. They are not obliged to allow you the rest of the day.

So you have time off for your scan? But not the whole day as requested?

Whilst annoying, asking for a certain day off isn't the same as being granted the day off.

Unless I have misunderstood.

You are legally entitled to time off to attend the scan you are not however legally entitled to whole day off to go shopping afterwards.

They are legally obligated to allow you time off for antenatal appointments on full payment. Anything over this is at their discretion.

Unless you are asking to use a days annual leave (which again they can refuse), you expect them to just allow you to take the whole day off?

Just go shopping that evening/another day

You asked to swap days completely is that right?

Technically all they have to do is allow you the time off for the scan (I had one in the middle of the day and had to work before and after!!). If I had "wanted to go shopping afterwards because we were finding out the sex" then I'd have had to booked Annual Leave!

It doesn't sound like she actually asked for anything, it sounds like she hinted and talked about it, and expected to get it without any formal request.

I really feel for you, what's not to get excited about, being able to enjoy shopping for your baby! And they've taken the shine off your happiness being miserable and ungenerous.

Rise above it and don't let them get you down. Can you book a different day off?

They can't make you work on the morning of your scan, they have to give you time off for your appointment.

As for the afternoon, you'd like it off to do some baby shopping which would be nice. They've declined the request (assuming a formal request was put in?).

It's a tad on the mean side but they're not obliged to give you a specific afternoon off for shopping. If I was you I'd pout and then get over it, reschedule the shopping to the weekend and plan something nice to make a day of it together. In the whole scale of things it really doesn't matter if you do the shopping on that afternoon or the next day you have off together.

That's mean and small-minded of your boss... unless there's a genuine reason why you alone are needed to cover that specific shift, which I doubt. But as others have said, it's not illegal, so you don't really have any recourse to complain.

How have they taken the "shine" off OP happiness because OP can't go shopping??

She will still get to check on the baby and make sure her baby is ok which is surely all that matters not a baby grow

They have to give you time off to go to your scan and pay you for it.

You are being unreasonable asking for the rest of the day off to go shopping. They are well within their rights to tell you to come back to work straight after your scan, or take the time as holiday.

If she wanted to go shopping she should have booked the day off.

As per all PP's. Your employer legally have to give you time off for the scan. But only the scan. So say for example you're working 7am - 1 pm. Your scan is at 10am and you need 30 mins to get there and get parked etc. You would technically be expected to work 7-9:30, leave for the scan, then return to work for the remainder of your shift.

Any shift or annual leave requests are just treated as normal requests. I think in this situation you need to work your shift around the scan but tell them " just to make it clear, I will be leaving for my scan at x time".

So apart from mentioning it at least 8 times did you put a formal leave request in?
