Has anyone else made it into their forties without having wisdom teeth appearing or needing to be removed?

I wonder about this occasionally since I just never seemed to have any wisdom tooth "activity" occur in my mouth but so many people I know have had them removed. My teeth are pretty straight and look and feel the same as ever. I just wonder since it's seems that more people have them removed than don't?

Mine grumbled for while when I was a student about 20 or 21 but never can all the way through.

KickAssAngel · 12/07/2016 21:41

I don't have any.

Bloopbleep · 12/07/2016 21:43

They told me mine would never come through when I was 30. I hit 38 and they started moving and hurting. The bottom ones are impacted, half in the jaw bone and the roots are tangled in the nerves so they're really reluctant to remove them. If they do is have to go into hospital under GA. I've ended up on antibiotics quite a few times as they get infected easily. Fingers crossed they've stayed quiet for about 6 months. I'm 41 (in a couple of days) and am teething my eye teeth too. Dentist says it's impossible for adult teeth to move but one is being pushed out. I hate my wonky teeth.

Some people don't have any. By that, I mean they don't exist under the gums for them to erupt. I was told this by a dentist because I had a back molar removed and potentially they could have pulled my wisdom tooth forward with a brace (I was only a teenager) but I had no wisdom teeth there. I have one on the bottom that niggles occasionally. I have been told, although not sure how true this is, that evolution is occurring to mean that they may become rarer (in the past, the wisdom teeth would prolong life as the 3rd set of teeth making reproduction more likely, thus being passed down to generations below) - although I don't know the truth of this, especially as a lot on this thread say they didn't come through til much later in life.

loopsngeorge · 12/07/2016 22:05

I don't have any, they don't exist, and I'm missing several adult teeth as well. I still have a couple of baby teeth that are just about hanging in there! I was told it can be hereditary too.

ToadsforJustice · 12/07/2016 22:13

My only wisdom tooth appeared last year. I'm 58. It's growing out towards my cheek, so at some point I will have to have it removed. My dentist says it will take two small cuts to my gum and the use of the "extractor". Shock

Heidi42 · 12/07/2016 22:15

mine are slowly coming through I am 55 lol hardly a baby

Fomalhaut · 12/07/2016 22:19

37, mine (well, 3 of them) are impacted to a degree that they're sideways in the jaw crushing the ones next to them. Intermittently painful but too risky to remove. The fourth one might come through.
Not everyone actually has wisdom teeth but your dentist should be able to check the state of play with an X Ray.

madamginger · 12/07/2016 22:19

I'm 36 and I have 1 on the top. The other 3 are not formed in my jaw and won't erupt.
My dentist told me when I was 17 that I only had 1. It came when I was 23 and I've never had any bother with it.

ShtoppenDerFloppen · 12/07/2016 22:21

DH (51) never had his removed, XH (47) never had his come in.

I, on the other hand, had all of mine impacted and causing problems by the time I was 15. Had them all out at the same time then.

Kalispera · 12/07/2016 22:23

I don't have any: X-rays proved it!

ozymandiusking · 12/07/2016 22:23

I'm 65, the wisdom teeth can be seen on xray but have never come through.

CointreauVersial · 12/07/2016 22:23

I'm 49, and all four wisdom teeth came through perfectly, and have been there for years. No bother at all.

This is probably because I had premolars removed during my teens because of overcrowding. So there was plenty of room for them.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 12/07/2016 22:24

I'm a lot nearer 50 than 40 and no sign of them appearing yet, although my dentist says it can happen any time.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 12/07/2016 22:25

Op, have you had an X-ray? I don't actually have any wisdom teeth for them to grow through. Neither does my mum or nan!

Canyouforgiveher I say this too Grin

ohdearme1958 · 12/07/2016 22:25

I almost 60 and unaware if I have wisdom teeth or not.

Oldraver · 12/07/2016 22:27

I had my upper two come through late teens with no problems. An x-ray showed my bottom two in the gum lying sideways with their tops touching the side of my very back molars. My dentist wanted to take them all out and I chickened out and never went back for 13 years. When I next went to the dentist they said they dont automatically take them out.

One broke through the gum sideways and it was a bugger to clean and started to decay..the molar next to it totally broke and it was decided to take it out and allow the wisdom tooth to take its place....it hasn't, it is still sideways now with a filling. This was when I was about 42

I think the other bugger is making its prescence known. I need to go and get it x-rayed sometime..So its only the last few months one has bothered me and I'm 51

junebirthdaygirl · 12/07/2016 22:28

4 wisdom teeth since college days. Still there now lm in my 50s. Wide mouth. Dd had hers removed as soon as they appeared as orthodontist said they would undo all the good work done by braces. Narrow mouth.

Rainbunny · 12/07/2016 22:29

Peppa - I have had teeth x-rays, although the last time was probably nearly a decade ago. I simply can't remember if they showed any wisdom teeth hiding out in my mouth, plus I was living abroad at that time so no way to track them down I suppose. Everytime I go to the dentist I tell myself to ask and then promptly forget!

It's interesting to get feedback from other mumsnetters though on the prevalence of wisdom teeth in general!

Never thought much about them, but I have them all, seem halfway grown. I don't recall any dentist ever mentioning them either, and I do go evey 6 months!

You don't hAve to have them removed now if they are impacted or did (as mine are) unless they are causing you bother.

fourquenelles · 12/07/2016 22:31

60 here and no wisdom teeth as far as I know.

Floggingmolly · 12/07/2016 22:32

I got two in my thirties with no issues at all.

Tessticklesyourfancy · 12/07/2016 22:39

All mine came through in my late teens, the bottom two no problem, the top ones would grow a bit then stop for a few months then grow a bit more, they were a bit sore. No problems after that until one broke last year and it's now got a crown.
