Things you have been bullied or ridiculed about

My dc is starting school soon and has inherited my wild, curly hair. I'm worried she will be bullied like I was.

Having curls has made me feel ugly and ashamed all my life. I was called names and even had my hair yanked. I was called ugly. All because my hair didn't lie straight. I really hope things have moved on a dc won't go through the same thing.

So I guess I want to know what things you have been picked on about as a child or even now, as these things make you feel
Inferior, things can deeply hurt for years. How did you regain confidence?

My school coat. I was teeny tiny and skinny, smallest in my year from Nursery to 6th form. When I started comp my mother failed to find me a regulation school coat that would fit. She explained her predicament to the Head and he was fine with the alternative. Unfortunately it was Airforce blue and looked like a flasher mac. I was subsequently called Inch High Private Eye after the diminutive cartoon detective.

mrsclooneytoyou · 12/07/2016 21:38

Being poor... Not having the right brands or any money or trendy clothes

miserablemoo · 12/07/2016 21:39

I also had the wrong accent due to moving twice. Moved from the north to the south and got teased for it. Then moved from south to north and got teased again.

Also because we were poor and having cheap clothes. In my old school pictures I looked really scruffy Sad

DrDreReturns · 12/07/2016 21:41

I got bullied for being 'posh' when I was in the Scouts. I went to a private school and everyone else in the Scouts went to state schools.
It was only one person though.

EdmundCleverClogs · 12/07/2016 21:42

I had frizzy, mad hair and buck-teeth (basically a less intelligent Hermione from Harry Potter). Oh, and I have a quite teasable first name. My arse of a mother sent me in odd/none appropriate school uniform as well, such as fleece cardigans instead of a school jumper (we weren't poor, she was just the biggest bully in my life and seem to enjoy other kids picking on me).

It's odd what kids pick on though, when I was in school, teeth braces were 'cool'. I remember kids who didn't really need them getting some, and getting various colours going through them. Curly hair is beautiful though, I doubt there will be teasing (anyone who would can only be jealous!).

ZoeB2016 · 12/07/2016 21:42

I went to a local hair dresser rather than waiting a couple of days for an appointment at my regular one and ended up with a very scraggly almost mullet instead of the lovely choppy cut I wanted. I was probably about 14 at the time and thought it looked OK until a couple of thee boys in school started calling me mullet man (am not a man). Thankfully it didn't stick for long and I got my hair fixed.

Dachshund · 12/07/2016 21:42

JessTitchener and we're Archers fans too?

Forgot a few more others have said -

Posh accent - Southener who moved North

Being poor - not having name brand stuff

Having a funny name - it's very trendy now though so I was just ahead of my time Grin

Also remember being teased for being Jewish and not understanding why

Tiggywinkler · 12/07/2016 21:43

Oh God, where to start.

Greasy hair, buck teeth, massive NHS glasses, matronly boobs, head constantly in a book. I was mincemeat for most of high school.

Lasik, Bravissimo and braces later, I look nice, and am very proud of my academic achievements.

Oddly, all the bullies all try to sell me Forever Aloe Living crap now on FB.

MumOnACornishFarm · 12/07/2016 21:45

Notorious I could have written your post! Mine were:
Being flat chested
Being really skinny (got called 'cricket stumps' because of my spindly legs)
Being clever Confused
Being 'posh' (we were never posh, we were just different with slightly eccentric parents)
Wearing glasses
Having my hair cut short ( I had it cut even shorter to show everyone just how much of a toss I gave)
Having big teeth

It took me a long time to get over some of the things that were said to me, by boys and girls and even teachers. But it made me pretty resiliant, and gave me a 'give no fucks' attitude when it comes to bullies and idiots. And a few of those things became very positive later on; I had a pretty fantastic figure in my teens through to my early 30s before childbirth destroyed my body and my mind. For what it's worth OP I was always desperate for curly hair (mine's a bit wavy) and used to beg my mother to let me have a spiral perm when my hair was long! She never let me.

Hrafnkel · 12/07/2016 21:46

Being fat
Being the new girl
Being the only grammar-school girl in my guide pack. Even one of the helpers joined in Hmm

muddypuddled · 12/07/2016 21:52

For speaking too quietly. People still comment on it now and it really pisses me off. I'm talking normally they clearly just aren't listening. My daughter is a red head. Only 9 months old but I do worry that she'll get picked on when she's older as that used to be the thing that a lot of people were picked on for when I was at school.

Iamthegreatest1 · 12/07/2016 21:54

for being short.
for looking young

RunnerOnTheRun · 12/07/2016 21:56

Having a slightly northern accent in a North London school. Don't do it. Fake it or whatever, just save yourself!

Curly hair is rife, I really wouldn't worry, there'll be loads of 'em at school!

FlysInDreams · 12/07/2016 21:59

For being small and quiet.

ResetTheMap · 12/07/2016 22:05

Being fat (even when I had an eating disorder and a BMI of 18 Hmm).
My unusual surname.
Having "weird" parents (my dad has ASD).
Having acne.
Being ugly.
Being a swot / being thick (see above re: my weight, my bullies weren't very consistent).
Bring shit at sports.
Being born in a particular place.
Crying when I was bullied.

VoldysGoneMouldy · 12/07/2016 22:06

Having boobs.

Being friends with someone with mental health problems who self harmed. I got called 'slit rat', and had my arms pinned down and cut in class.

Just general existing really. I was bullied horrifically. Had my hair set on fire. Pushed down stairs. Told to kill myself.

School was fucking hideous. And DS is very similar to me, I worry so much about it impacting him like it did - and continues to - affect me.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 12/07/2016 22:06

As a teenager I was mocked because I walked with a straight back 😀🙄
At work, I was mocked/bullied by my boss because I failed to provide him with gossip and he didn't feel that I warmed to him. 🙄That's because he was a mysoginist bell end. Also, I'm not a gossipy, typical chatty woman. Oh well.

lolaflores · 12/07/2016 22:07

wrong accent in wrong country
poor single parent family
a reader and intelligent
fat/not fat. thought I was cos my mum and brother insisted i was
under shot jaw and odd nose
my sister called me big jaw macgraw and penis nose.
I had surgery on the jaw and wold like the nose sorted. it really does look like a willy though.
my youngest has red hair and its like cat nip to old ladies and its so beautiful i get teary about it

Frenchboat · 12/07/2016 22:10

Blimey. This is now bringing memories back.

Yes was bullied also for eczema, being shy & having m&s trainers. Also for wearing m&s copy Doctor Martins.

It's funny what has changed though. I refused to wear my glasses in school as feared I would yet again be the laughing stock.

Now older dc was thrilled to need glasses as they are all the rage, and wanted the biggest geek chic ones she could get. Looked like the old nhs to me but I guess those are now cool.

Also red hair is seen as the ultimate hair colour at dc school she wants to dye it , but in my day red hard made you a target. No idea why red hair is stunning

Ilovetea82 · 12/07/2016 22:11

Being posh - because I didn't swear
Being clever
Having horrible dry skin that flaked everywhere
Having fuzzy hair - in the days before ghds saved my life

I now have a successful career and am still bullied by my mums family as I prioritise getting up with my son over staying up drinking with them when I visit my mother

SmellyHead · 12/07/2016 22:15

Reading/doing ok at school
No-brand trainers
No boobs (before they grew)
Boobs too big (after they grew)
Being a virgin (age 13)

Wincarnis · 12/07/2016 22:18

Wearing glasses
Being fat
Being ginger
Oh how i loved school! Grin

Unicorn1981 · 12/07/2016 22:19

I got picked on at school for being too skinny! I'm not skinny now!

TheDuchyOfGrandFenwick · 12/07/2016 22:20

Being fat
Horrible teeth
Frizzy hair
Being poor
Existing

It was so bad, practically the whole school bullied me, even the new year 7's!

ThinkPinkStink · 12/07/2016 22:21

My mum 'not wearing shoes' when she dropped me off at the bus stop on my first day at secondary school...

She was wearing shoes.

It was brought up for years!
