To be mad about the school photo

DS is in reception. They were supposed to be sent home with proofs for their school photo but he didn't get is. When we asked where his proof was so we could order the photo, teacher got a bit snippy 'I put all of them in the bag myself' but then I saw a copy in the classroom and he wasn't in it.

'well he wasn't here then obviously, that's why he didn't get a form.'

Except he was at school, which a quick look at the register confirmed. Turns out they were doing some fancy photo where they take pictures of small groups and then merge them together later when they're editing it. DS got forgotten about so isn't in the picture.

I called because I was worried that he'd gone missing or something and they hadn't let me know - but no they'd just forgot him. Now the photo company has photoshopped his individual school photo onto the class photo.

Would anyone else be annoyed about this or just me?

No I wouldn't be annoyed. A bit let down at the organisation at most. But not mad in the slightest.

Must be a good photo company to photoshop your DC in

Yes I would be annoyed, that's a horrible oversight. :( Does the photoshopped picture look nice? As in, you can't tell he was photoshopped in?

I don't understand why his individual photo didn't come back in his bag. Was that done on a different day? If so that still begs the question of where was he when the group shop was taken.

I'd be very disappointed if my DS had missed his first school photo. And a bit annoyed by the teachers attitude too actually.

Yes I would be annoyed. Being left out is never nice and he's old enough to realise.

But if they apologised profusely I'd stop being annoyed.

The photoshop job isn't horrendous - he's slightly lighter than the others but I've just accepted it cos it's the best it's going to be.

I'm not as mad now that I have an explanation - I was thinking he'd just been left to sit in a classroom by himself or something!

They took his individual photo because he moved into the class after september and they didn't have one of him so I think it was just for their records.

glad i'm not the only one who thinks its a bit out of order

Does everyone in the class get a new photo with your DS? I'd be really annoyed otherwise as you pay a lot of money to these companies.

They did the same kind of photo for DSs class and only realised when they sent out the proofs that they had chopped off one of the girls legs when they merged the groups together to make the photo, she's got legs back in the final ones but apparently they aren't hers (wrong socks) 😂 - oh photos used to be so much simpler

Our school do this amazing thing, where they get all the class together, sit them on benches and take their photo. They're all in it and they all have legs.

Seriously, WTF is it with having to photoshop them all in? Ridiculous.

It's a shame he was missed, and you're right to be a bit put out, but at least it's resolved.

I work at a school, early years, and honestly the photo taking day is chaotic no matter how well organised! There are always thirty impatient, excited children wriggling on the hall floor waiting to be called in groups of say 6-8, he must've wriggled out of/moved away from his group. Each group goes up for their photo with an adult, or not, as the case may be. There are always the next thirty also waiting noisily in the hallway to come in and everyone's rushing like mad.

I know it's a shame, but hopefully that may explain how it happened a little...

One year I only got one individual photo of my twins. Another set of twins only got one photo too. They must have thought they'd duplicated the photos and got rid of one!

I told the DT without the photo it was on the dartboard in the staff room.

I don't care about class photos.
Why would I want a photo of other people's kids, half of whom I don't even know.

Keep it, bring it out in years to come and ask him if he remembers where he was, that or make an elaborate story up as to why he wasn't in the picture and they had to photoshop him in :-) it might be a funny story to reminisce about in years to come.

BTW might he have been put in position then ran off just before the photographer took the shot?

Another - you would want it for your child, who's in school with these "other people's kids". His or her friends, you know? Nice for your child to look back on in years to come.

Very easily done with this style of photo - children get called up in groups, if one child isn't listening or moves places on the bench then they might get missed.

School photos are a massive pain in the arse for teachers and don't benefit them or the kids.

I agree whitephantom, I have two class photos that my mum kept and I love them, I love seeing everyone else's hair and cheeky smiles etc. Some of my classmates are deceased so they are lovely keepsakes.

My ds was missed out on his group photo in nursery, it was only when we saw copies and realised he was missing that we were aware that anything was amiss. We ended up going into the studio so he could be Photoshopped in, yes you are right to be upset but a workable solution gas been made available,

I hate the photoshopped class photos with a passion. One year DD appeared to be one of the smaller children despite being tallest in the class, they just got their sizing wrong. This year DS is a pulling a selection of bizarre faces in the small photos as he hates being forced to pose in "funky" positions. It seems they may have photoshopped his head in from somewhere else for the class photo. It looks very odd.

Outcomes - I know! I think that's why I was so mad - if they could have just counted the children it would be so much easier to know if someone was missing!

The school said that he had his individual photo taken then was sat down with a group who had already had their group photo taken and since there were 2 photographers nobody noticed.

I was a lot angrier yesterday as I had all sorts of paranoid thoughts about what could have happened to him!!

I hate these photos. I had a nursery picture where my tiny DS was allegedly about the same size as the boy nearly a foot taller. I want a picture of DS and his peers as they are. Rows looked better, and avoids cock ups like this.

I'm glad there was an innocent explanation and they've done what they can to resolve it. Unfortunately it would always miff me that the photo had been edited.

Oh, that's not on! Absolutely I'd be sad for my child at being left out, especially if they had joined the class part way through the year.
How to make a kid feel like they belong, eh?
More to the point, is there anything else he's missing out on, aspects of an education, perhaps?! Sure, I'd be mad.

Our school have gone back to putting the whole class on the benches and taking 1 photo all together instead of those awful photoshopped monstrosities.
