I live in a middle class area which is dominated by lecturers , gp s , social workers etc -my Dh fits into that catagory and I am an x that catagory .
It's a really pretty area and the kids roam between houses etc
Recently - I seem to be a little irritated by its predictability and 'niceness '- tho am aware it's a good area I really am .
I'm
Grumpy menopausal creature at present !
The paint work is mainly Farrell and ball, same kitchen appliances , similar dress code .etc . Whilst I too have Farrell n ball in one room and may therefore fit into the cliche myself (!) I'm becoming quite amused by it all in a way but don't know why .Part of me loves it part of me wants to say rude words and act up and be a Harridan !
Why do we follow these 'tribal 'things ? .the estate agent once reffered to the area as all lentil s and lintels . 😃

garden I had a pony and acres. I'd still rather live in a naice, middle class area than one with boarded up windows. Preferably one which isn't too leftie trendy. I did for years, then we moved out a bit where there's room for pools and croquet lawns - but funnily there's nothing tribal about it. Our neighbours are all different too. A doctor family, a barrister, rich widow, company exec, Cpl more but I don't know what they do. There's a nice half acre plot between us all and we are very pleased to keep our distance.

EllenDegenerate · 11/07/2016 16:55

All this navel gazing class malarkey could do with its own board you know.

Enough people seem to like this kind of thing. MNHQ could even dress it up as an anthropological section if they felt the need.

mumofthemonsters808 · 11/07/2016 16:56

I'm working class and live in a working class area, I must admit when I venture into the neighbouring middle class areas, I'm always amused by my observations and have a silent giggle to myself because everything's so sterotypical. I could list my observations but I don't want to offend anyone, but Its like a different world and I feel like an imposter.

EightNoineTen · 11/07/2016 17:00

I find the whole class thing a minefield. Still not sure how to work out what class I am despite asking in another thread. (The last paints I bought were homebase own brand and Wilkinson's so if that's how you tell I guess I'm low.)

handslikecowstits · 11/07/2016 17:03

we are very pleased to keep our distance

Now that is very middle class.

I live in a weird twilight zone area which is becoming gentrified. The posh wine shop is next door to Greggs. Grin

oldlaundbooth · 11/07/2016 17:06

Always remember a friend of a friend of mine who was rough as rats working class who married into substantial money.

She said 'I've only moved to Yorkshire, not Cheshire, I'm not that posh!'.

I think she just enjoyed not having neighbors who copied Shameless characters.

oldlaundbooth · 11/07/2016 17:07

'A friend had L O V E above their bedroom. I told DH and he suggested F U C K would be less twee '

YES!!!!

Sara107 · 11/07/2016 17:10

A lintel is the supporting thing placed over holes such as windows and doors to hold up the wall above the hole. I don't see how that defines an area? I suppose it's alliterative with the lentils, but I think this is just estate agent language.

EffieIsATrinket · 11/07/2016 17:14

But why don't you get a gas fire, or paint your door orange if it is all getting on your nerves?

Brilliant Grin

Shakespearmint · 11/07/2016 17:16

You know the area you live in is 'moving up' when the 'Organic Lesbians' move in . Y'know, blueberry muffins ,etc.

Styledandprepped · 11/07/2016 17:20

I'm presuming you mean Farrow and Ball? Hmm

EverySongbirdSays · 11/07/2016 17:20

If your biggest problem in life is that you have angst that you've become a cliche of a comfortable lifestyle you might need to give your head a wobble OP.

Shakespearmint · 11/07/2016 17:23

Wallpaper -
I mean do people still use the stuff?
I can understand arty -book-case -motif but WTF?

jellyfrizz · 11/07/2016 17:26

There's no such thing as class. It's all made up bollocks.

PageStillNotFound404 · 11/07/2016 17:29

Bugger, I'm still aspiring to a woodburner and an artisan sausage roll. Always behind the curve, that's me.

revealall · 11/07/2016 17:30

Well it might be easier living in a MC town in many ways but it's soul destroying and quite stressful in other ways.
My town used to be a normal market town. We had a range of pubs from dead rough to wine bars. We had a range of shops from cheap to boutique.
We are now constantly in the top 10 towns to live in.
This means the little roads are permanently clogged as London money moves in with it's 3 private school kids and endless activities they get shipped to. Everyone has improved and extended the quirky cottages resulting in them looking like someone has built a massive estate.. The village fetes are exactly the same ( and very expensive). All the pubs are now improved serving exactly the same tapas, a homemade burger and sea bass.
It's hard work being poor in this town.

Headofthehive55 · 11/07/2016 17:33

I buy paint that I like the colour of not the make...am I just too practical?

2rebecca · 11/07/2016 17:37

What are all the OIF square logos with numbers in the OP's posts or is it my computer? I've noticed a lot of these appearing recently

handslikecowstits · 11/07/2016 17:42

Christ almighty! I've had a look at how much a 2.5l tin of F&B white matt paint costs - £39.49 in Homebase and a 2.5l tin of gloss is £54.99.

I knew it was expensive but I didn't realise it was that expensive!

PageStillNotFound404 · 11/07/2016 17:43

2rebecca I think it happens when a poster includes emoticons from typing on a smartphone/tablet that the laptop can't decipher.

Lndnmummy · 11/07/2016 17:47

Today 14:26 bibbitybobbityyhat

Bibbi, i think we live in the same place

Doobigetta · 11/07/2016 17:50

I don't get this stereotype. I was brought up squarely in this demographic. We lived in the naicest area, but my parents could rarely afford to decorate. And now I'm making good money- more than a lecturer (sorry)- and no bloody way would I fork out for Farrow and Ball. Surely it's way out of the budget of anyone who isn't a millionaire, given that it's four time the price of Dulux and looks exactly the same on the bloody walls?! may have focussed on the wrong point here

doing · 11/07/2016 17:51

I don't live in an area like this but my sister does.

It's all wanky spelt bakery, wanky cheese shop, wanky sausage shop. Even the Spar is super snazzy.

It makes me laugh. I'm kind of glad I could never afford to don't live there.

oldlaundbooth · 11/07/2016 17:53

What's the actual difference between f&b and Dulux? Just the price?

doing · 11/07/2016 17:54

Given that Dulux can colour match, I presume so Smile
