I live in a middle class area which is dominated by lecturers , gp s , social workers etc -my Dh fits into that catagory and I am an x that catagory .
It's a really pretty area and the kids roam between houses etc
Recently - I seem to be a little irritated by its predictability and 'niceness '- tho am aware it's a good area I really am .
I'm
Grumpy menopausal creature at present !
The paint work is mainly Farrell and ball, same kitchen appliances , similar dress code .etc . Whilst I too have Farrell n ball in one room and may therefore fit into the cliche myself (!) I'm becoming quite amused by it all in a way but don't know why .Part of me loves it part of me wants to say rude words and act up and be a Harridan !
Why do we follow these 'tribal 'things ? .the estate agent once reffered to the area as all lentil s and lintels . 😃

You can swop with me. You might like the fly tipping, rats, domestics and other colourful experiences.

I cannot let my DS out on street as too bad driving and many bad people about. I would love to live somewhere nice instead.

ginorwine · 11/07/2016 14:57

Lintel reference
This was because most people expose the stone lintel above the fireplace and have a woodburner inserted in the gap
Guilty as charged - I have two woodburners 😜
They are fab but in every house - not a gas fire to be seen .

My decorator says Farrow and Ball paint is sh*te, can only assume your middle class neighbours have rubbish decorators or they are not middle class enough to pay for one.

I raise you a MC village with lots of agricultural types, and retirees (affluent)
I've been here nearly 30 years and still don't feel I fit in as an 'incomer'
Having spent most of it as a full time single working parent I stand out like a sore thumb amongst the twee boutiques and ladies who lunch cafes

CookieDoughKid · 11/07/2016 14:58

I moved from naiice village to a socially mixed town. I thought the village was very over-rated. It had one poncy grocery store that was a rip off and sold nothing I wanted. It had no amenities or entertainment for children over age 6 and I felt it a very very insulated community. Neighbours don't socialise and families won't let their kids out to play on the street. Also my pretty village of a cottage suffered from road noise at front and a rail noise at 90db at the back almost 24x7!! It was hideous.

Have moved to a bigger town and a proper suburb area and I feel my kids benefit waaaay more. Living in a naiice village is overrated imo.

I feel like that every time I'm in Clerkenwell. I live a completely mundane suburban life but at least I don't pretend I'm more carefully sourced than the next person.

Working class people - ever get on your nerves - let's have a lighthearted dig and laugh at the things they do? Not sure how that would go down Hmm

ginorwine · 11/07/2016 15:01

Cat
Those who decorate bits themselves use f and b
When they employ a painter the painter recommended little green company as he said it was cheaper
I'm not paint obsessed - was there at the time of discussion 😄

The one that really gets my goat is the one's who think they are better as the shop in Waitrose.

Waitrose's own brand food is AWFUL, it really is bad - had better stuff from Aldi.

And the branded names are the exact same as you can get in Sainsbury's (or Tesco/Morrisons etc).

I won't think better of anyone until they say they do their entire food shop in Harrods Grin.

ppeatfruit · 11/07/2016 15:05

YABU I know families who are MC : they eat crap and live in WC areas. I also know WC people who've the sense to buy organic food because they care about the environment and what they put in their bodies.

People who are classist are as blinkered as racists IMO.

Bonywasawarriorwayayix · 11/07/2016 15:06

That sounds like East Dulwich Bibbity.
I suppose it depends on ones need to fit in to a tribe. I hate ghettoisation either way but not caring what other people think (aside from being polite etc) really helps.

ginorwine · 11/07/2016 15:06

Pp
I understand but I am being tounge in cheek

GPs, SWs, Lecturers strike me more as trendy lefties than particularly middle class. Sounds ghastly to me Grin

pinkflufyunicorns · 11/07/2016 15:08

DC go to a NOT "naice" school. I've noticed all the Boden wearing mums say good morning to each other even though we have no other connection. I suppose my point is like is attracted to like!

nilbyname · 11/07/2016 15:10

We are mc, but live in a very mixed area which we prefer.

When we go to stoke newington (stokey- bleuurgh) to see freinds it us nauseatingly mc and has the shops to prove it. No diversity.

ginorwine · 11/07/2016 15:11

Oh
Yes maybe you are right
It's very arty as well

PenguindreamsofDraco · 11/07/2016 15:12

Bibbitybobbity, how dare you run down ED like that Wink Grin

e1y1 · 11/07/2016 15:12

Asda - oh perish the thought! Grin

Foxyspook · 11/07/2016 15:12

But why don't you get a gas fire, or paint your door orange if it is all getting on your nerves?

Owllady · 11/07/2016 15:13

I live in a town that is like something out of country living magazine. I don't fit in. This was proved when my son's friends mother came to pick him up and said 'oh I love your house, it's just like a student's pad'
:o
