I live in a middle class area which is dominated by lecturers , gp s , social workers etc -my Dh fits into that catagory and I am an x that catagory .
It's a really pretty area and the kids roam between houses etc
Recently - I seem to be a little irritated by its predictability and 'niceness '- tho am aware it's a good area I really am .
I'm
Grumpy menopausal creature at present !
The paint work is mainly Farrell and ball, same kitchen appliances , similar dress code .etc . Whilst I too have Farrell n ball in one room and may therefore fit into the cliche myself (!) I'm becoming quite amused by it all in a way but don't know why .Part of me loves it part of me wants to say rude words and act up and be a Harridan !
Why do we follow these 'tribal 'things ? .the estate agent once reffered to the area as all lentil s and lintels . 😃

I know people say things about working class people gin, but it is rightly immediately leapt upon and shut down as being offensive. I don't think if i said i was being tongue in cheek and asked people to mock working class people that many mners would laugh along. I know people can be self depreciating and it can be amusing to laugh at ourselves, but these things/threads often turn into unpleasant lists just insulting people and some people pushing a spiteful agenda. Soon it will turn to names and then it gets really nasty.

CamilleClaudel · 11/07/2016 15:16

For God's sake, you don't have to MC to see that Jack Vettriano's painting is visually-illiterate colour-by-numbers shite!

nilbyname · 11/07/2016 15:17

Stokey is so smug. It's annoying! Too many pleased with themselves media types.

I much prefer s. London. I used to live I Islington and that was pretty dire too.

ginorwine · 11/07/2016 15:18

Ok Mrs point taken .
Will discuss in rl with friends who I can read as with them as I don't want bun fight

Could be worst, it could be working class tat (I visited a colleague in the midlands once and it was everywhere!!!) such as large signs that describe the function; the worst i've seen was a tap handle that actually said "TAP", and the mirror said that said "MIRROR", the best i've seen is a Larder sign.. or sticker quotes stuck over where the fire place used to be such as "love and let love" etc..

Village life is the best! Where i live practically everyone is crossknobbing, and the village fair always feels like it should be the scene from a colin firth film or a murder plot!

EssentialHummus · 11/07/2016 15:34

crossknobbing

I don't know what this is True but it sounds fun Grin.

JoffreyBaratheon · 11/07/2016 15:35

And I come from a very middle class background (house with an acre of land and outbuildings, 5 bedrooms, had a cleaner, mum a farmer's daughter and dad a fairly well off businessman's son) but live in a council house. I'd rather have your life, OP. Although I happen to love my house. I wish I'd had a life where I ended up with a home of my own at my age (in my 50s). Instead I live hand to mouth, week to week, and have nothing (Mum died, dad remarried - stepmother got everything).

randomer · 11/07/2016 15:36

oh lordy do they cross dress whilst cross knobbing

Beeziekn33ze · 11/07/2016 15:57

Cross knobbing thread please!
Islington - plenty of council flats and street crime. Needs an Aldi IMHO though or Iceland for the exclusive SW ready meals.

Beeziekn33ze · 11/07/2016 15:59

OP - sure you're not in Notting Hell by Rachel Johnson?!

nuttymango · 11/07/2016 16:01

Organic and Gourmet is so yesterday, Artisan is where it's at now.

piddleypower · 11/07/2016 16:02

I basically live in The Only Way is Essex. I am the only person in my street who is not blonde and orange. I would love to live somewhere with an organic deli, people who know what Farrow and Ball is, and Waitrose on tap.

Badders123 · 11/07/2016 16:04

Ah, yes
"artisan" = stuff that middle class people make that working class people used to make!

PixieGio · 11/07/2016 16:12

This is all news to me. I think I'm working class. Definitely from a wc background. Now a sahm. How do I tell if I'm working class or not now? I'm 32, my last paid job was an air hostess and have been in the aviation game for 10 years. No degree. Am I still wc? Sorry for hijack! I definitely don't have those signs all around the house though. But I do shop at Ikea if that comes into it? Baffling!

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 11/07/2016 16:13

bibbitybobbityyhat

I think I can guess which lane you are taking about

They sell local produce at the weekly farmers market but I have no idea where local actually is

TransformersRobotsInDaSky · 11/07/2016 16:14

My friend moved to a similar area three years ago and is drained by the whole thing. Her DH is so proud of the fact that they live in the niace area so he can tell all his workmates but she's dreading her DD going to school because she'll have to mix with all the organic parents at the school gate.

shrunkenhead · 11/07/2016 16:18

I wouldn't associate the name Ellie-Mae or Audis as mc....

PixieGio · 11/07/2016 16:26

Agree with shrunken re audis. If I see an A3 I assume it's a thug (it usually is around here to be fair).

WingsToFly · 11/07/2016 16:30

Exposed original wooden lintels seem to be a thing with cottages. Didn't know you put TWO woodburners in victorian houses.

Is it that you just want the place to have a bit of a shake up or have something 'happen'?

If you move regularly it can be good to time these things, moving in when it's just the first whiff of artisan and then sell as the last plumber's shop (or anything useful) disappears. But no, staying longterm in that milieu would get to me.

Sadik · 11/07/2016 16:33

I guess it's a reflection of social cleansing via property prices :(

I live in a coastal town & the only thing that saves it really is the fact that a fairly decent sized (relative to the popn.) housing association estate was built a few years back plus the ex-council houses have a local tie so they don't go to retirees from the city.

It's no reflection on one type of person to say that a community with a mixed population (age / class / income bracket) is more healthy and pleasant to live in.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 11/07/2016 16:38

Social cleansing is the biggest problem in London

It's very sad because London has always been predominately working class that is changing quicker than ever anyone could have predicted Sad

McT123 · 11/07/2016 16:39

Artisan is where it's at now.

OhTheRoses · 11/07/2016 16:42

A friend had L O V E above their bedroom. I told DH and he suggested F U C K would be less twee inappropriate though. I always wanted to dare.

Farmers' Markets always irritate me. I'm sure I've seen similar faces at them to the lads who used to work the North End Road stalls in the early 80s. Always want to ask them to brush the soil off the veg before weighing. Also, much as I agree with Free Range chicken I won't pay £19 for a scraggy bird or £3 for six eggs.

Gardencentregroupie · 11/07/2016 16:44

There really is some horrible inverse snobbery on this thread. I grew up in a very much NOT middle class area; I would far prefer Farrow & Ball and artisan to off licences with boarded up windows and people threatening to set 9 year old children on fire.
