AIBU to wear yellow to a wedding?

I'm going to a wedding this week and wanted to wear a new yellow dress to it (with a shawl, nude clutch and shoes etc, pearls).

I was looking for accessories ideas and went down the internet rabbit hole and ended up on a thread where some people were saying you shouldn't wear red to a wedding as you'll stand out in all the wedding photos.

Well, surely yellow would stand out too. It hadn't really occurred to me as yellow is such a happy, sunshiney, summery colour that I thought it would suit. All views most welcome!

treaclesoda I found out by accident one time and glad i did because i was planning to wear a dress the EXACT same colour as the bridesmaids (similar style too...i would've looked like a loon).

I know just try and politely ask people that might know a) if it's a secret or not and b) what colour it is.

I give it was too much head space i know!

^way

I bought it in Germany and can't find the brand online, but it's similar to this one (WAY less low cut though!) www.lovarni.com/day-dresses-c8/hybrid-slash-low-neck-short-sleeve-pencil-dress-yellow-p775

oh that's lovely. Nice and trim and tailored. Not sure a shawl would go with how neat it is. Do you have a more tailored jacket or cardigan to contrast the yellow?

blueshoes · 11/07/2016 10:14

Nice dress and colour. Agree with MrsK about the shawl. You need something more structured.

cfje · 11/07/2016 11:32

I am also taking up a cream jacket from Monsoon as it's going to be chilly. I think you're probably right - have been umming and aahing (it's a favourite shawl that I never get to wear) over what cover-up to wear :)

Personally I wouldn't wear cream with yellow. I think it needs a more bold contrast.

DarthMother · 11/07/2016 11:36

I can't see the picture of the dress but I think yellow is a lovely summery colour and it's a happy colour - perfect for a wedding.

NoahVale · 11/07/2016 11:39

i know someone who wore a very white dress, to her son's wedding.

wear what makes you happy.

Wishfulmakeupping · 11/07/2016 11:42

Yellow is lovely for a wedding op :)

Roussette · 11/07/2016 11:47

I think a shawl is far preferable. It always looks a bit mother of the bride to stick on a different colour jacket.

MrsKoala · 11/07/2016 12:04

Yes Rousette, i do think that too. I think suits/jackets at weddings in general are a bit MOB.

I probably just wouldn't wear anything over it and dance a lot to keep warm. :)

I'm envious OP, I haven't been to a wedding in years :( this may be because of my previous outfits!

MrsPear · 11/07/2016 12:13

Last British wedding I went too was my cousins. I double checked bridesmaids colour and then choose orange with large butterfly's! No one batted an eyelid in fact I had compliments. Now the guests I did judge where those who made zero effort. Surely a wedding is a special occasion where one dresses up? As it was a summer we had over a year notice.

Sunnymeg · 11/07/2016 12:15

One of our ushers wore a white suit to our wedding. (think Saturday Night Fever). He totally misunderstood when DH asked him to wear a light coloured suit😀 It gave every one a good laugh to see him with everyone else in their light grey suits. Yellow as a wedding colour sounds lovely. I hope you enjoy the wedding.

liquidrevolution · 11/07/2016 12:26

I always take the colour of the invitation to indicate the colour of the bridesmaids dresses.

Dress looks lovely OP!

Wear what you want. No one will be looking at you anyway. It's the bride's day!

noeffingidea · 12/07/2016 11:17

Yellow is a great colour for a wedding.
As for not wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids, how are the guests supposed to know that, if they're not told before the day. I've never been to a wedding where this has been on the invitations.
Come to think of it, I've never been to a wedding with a dress code for the guests. I've always worn the one suitable for a wedding outfit that I own whatever I fancy and never given the colour of it a second thought.

Gottagetmoving · 12/07/2016 11:49

All these 'rules' about weddings and clothes?
I have never heard of any colour not being ok. I wore Yellow at a wedding. It wasn't over the top bright but it was most definitely yellow.
I think bright colours are lovely for a wedding. If in doubt check with the Bride.

sandbagsatdawn · 12/07/2016 12:27

Lol at Mrs Koala's invite. That's properly silly. I wouldn't go either. I agree, wear what you like. My mum wore red with a big red hat to my wedding and looked lovely. I wish people wore hats more often...

Mirandawest · 12/07/2016 12:32

I'm getting married at the end of the month.

I don't care what colour clothes people come in. I don't care if women wear white dresses as it will be quite clear I am the bride as I'm the one with the bouquet, a big smile on my face and will be the one saying vows and what have you.

I don't understand people getting their knickers in a twist about what people wear to the wedding. I do feel I might be missing something but really I don't care Grin

Mirandawest · 12/07/2016 12:33

Our invitations weren't a particular colour - they had a colourful drawing of DP and me on. So no one would guess any theme colour going on. We aren't helpful for guests trying to guess things. And we haven't said anything about gifts so who knows what will happen

MrsKoala · 12/07/2016 13:56

I must say i do think white is rude to wear to a wedding. My friends mum in the 70s wore powder blue trouser suite to her own wedding and her best friend (who was a model) turned up in a full length white broderie englais dress complete with flowers in her hair. When you look at the pictures she clearly looks like the bride and you immediately think 'oh theres Sue, but why isn't she next to Ken? and she seems very tall...and thin...oh that's not sue...' . Sadly her mum passed away tragically in her 30s and people who see the pics say to my friend, 'oh your mum was gorgeous, oh that's not your mum? oh yeah, she's ummm lovely too...' My friend laughs but the family still mutter about it to this day! Grin

And i just want to say we didn't not go to the above wedding just because of the dress code, but more for the fact our ebf baby wasn't invited and it was 3 days away from him and the invitation was astonishingly rude about it. that and the gift request was frankly outrageous!!

The dress looks great and if you feel comfortable in it wear it.

lydmae · 12/07/2016 15:58

I got married this year and a few people including my sister wore white. She checked with me beforehand and I was surprised that it was a 'thing'... of course it was fine. They all looked lovely in my photos, white is very summery and a flattering colour. I would have also been happy if someone had worn black, red, yellow or rainbow colour. It makes the photos look awesome if everyone is dressed in happy, bright colours! Obviously if someone wore a wedding dress or a full length black dress with a black veil (funeral style) that would be taking things a little too far! I think people need to chill out a little with the wedding rules when it comes to dress, let people express themselves and be confident that you will DEFINITELY not be upstaged being the bride.

ConkersDontScareSpiders · 12/07/2016 16:06

I've worn yellow to a wedding before and got lots of compliments-didn't even think about it tbh!
