Dh holiday underpacking

Aibu that Dh on a 10 day sailing flotilla and city break holiday needs to take more than 2 pairs of shorts &
4 t shits. He had packed his minuscule bag with no consideration of the rest of the stuff that needs taking ie small travel beach towels, sun cream, shampoo etc. I know we are sailing and space is at a minimum but he's now arguing with me that I think he needs a bigger bag. He has no smart clothes for evenings out. We are staying on after sailing for 3 nights in city. It's the same every holiday we take. I'm not an over packer, I've 2 dresses, 1 skirt and 3 shorts plus a variety of tops, deck shoes, flip flops and one pair of nicer shoes.

I used to pack DH's suitcase before every holiday. But once we had DC I realised it was just too much stress. I already do all the laundry, house cleaning, booking etc. If he can't be adult enough to plan a few outfits and transfer clean clothes from the drawers to a suitcase, then it's his fault if he's left without things.

So far we've had holidays where he's had to wash pants and dry them on a balcony, and a couple of trips to supermarkets to buy pants. But that's his problem.

For those who do the packing for their DHs, something that's always puzzled me about about, do you also do the clothes shopping for them in advance? Sometimes DH's "failure to pack" issues have also been due to having failed to go to the shops and buy things he needs for holiday before hand.

After 27 years of arranging the holidays, packing suitcases etc, etc. I stopped. I arranged to go on holiday with a very good female friend. The best holiday ever. I haven't been on holiday with DH since.

However, he hasn't had a holiday in 8 years. But that's his problem, he can arrange a holiday for us both, or him & a friend whenever he likes.

Doesn't stop him from moaning about how he would like to go on holiday though.

This reminds me of shoegate many many years ago.

We hadn't been to a hot country for a few years and DH hadn't bought many clothes for years. I managed to get him to concede to buy one pair of shorts (beige chino ones he moaned about at the time but then never took off) and a couple of t-shirts. When I mentioned appropriate footwear he half heartedly looked, then announced as all the shoes he saw were made in Spain he would wait until we got there.

Now his only pair of civilian shoes were tan brogues with the punch detail on...of course when we got to Spain he couldn't understand why they wern't millions of shoe shops selling what he wanted...er its a tourist resort and they probably export most of the shoes made...this was 30 years ago.

So he spent the first week walking round the pool in his tan brogues and socks until my Mum cracked and bought him some pool shoes

My OH is a work in progress as I teach him to pack everything he needs for a week into a Ryanair sized cabin bag. I've done it for years as I got fed up with airlines mislaying luggage plus I hate the carousel scrum.

Last trip was 6 days Sweden and Chicago .....no problem . I always buy toiletries out there tho due to the liquids rule.

trafalgargal · 10/07/2016 18:33

I'd never pack for him though. He's a big boy he can do it himself.

When we go on holiday (me, dh, 3x ds aged under 6), I do all the packing. We have yet to go abroad, but it would be the same (we wouldn't have our'own' cases - everyones would be mixed up in case one went missing!).
I sit and write a list of how many tops, bottoms, pairs of pants etc everyone needs, plus things like toiletries, shavers, etc. I obviously do the three kids and mine, and pass the list to dh who will sort his stuff out and put it on the bed ready for me to pack. I double check to make sure he has got everything, which tbf, he usually has. I figure if he forgot something, it could impact on the rest of us, so I would rather just spend an extra ten minutes doing his as well.

I've always had this fantasy of jumping on a plane with nothing but passport and credit card and just buying what I need when I get there (but then I tend to take the view when packing that as I don't go to really remote regions that apart from passport and cards nothing is a disaster if forgotten as can be bought locally)

YABU my DH is incapable of packing his own bag so be grateful your DH does not need supervision.
