I haven't read anything good for ages.
I like autobiographical, some historical, I do like psychological thrillers. I liked The Girl on The Train. I like Louise Candlish.
I'm not keen on chick lit. I don't like a happy ending.

Human Remains by Elizabeth Haynes....definitely not for the faint-hearted!

gladisgood · 06/07/2016 17:01

I agree with pp's about Room. It is one that I couldn't put down.

Autobiographical/historical: I enjoyed When a Crocodile Eats the sun and the Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks ( not the best writing in the world, but interesting)

a few things by Karin Slaughter:

Triptych
Cop Town

Kate Atkinson:

Life After Life

Justsaynonow · 06/07/2016 17:09

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

wineoclockthanks · 06/07/2016 17:10

Apple Tree Yard, can't remember who wrote it , sorry but I was hooked.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 06/07/2016 17:14

The goldfinch. Best book I've read in years.

The stand by Stephen king is also very good.

Justsaynonow · 06/07/2016 17:16

Oh yes, I agree with Kate Atkinson & Kate Morton - anything by them. Kimberly Freeman is similar.

Doomsday Book by Connie Willis (and all her others)

11/22/63 by Stephen King

The Passage Trilogy by Justin Cronin

I like anything by Emily Barr, too, but difficult to get in Canada.

FuriousFate · 06/07/2016 17:17

The Snowman - Jo Nesbo

FuzzyFairy · 06/07/2016 17:18

The Deaths by Mark Lawson is very good. Life in the posh cotwolds and how despite everyone putting on a rosy show, things are not how they seem.

Just What Kind of Mother Are You? by Paula Daly is also very good
"What could be worse than a child going missing? When it’s your best friend’s child. And it was on your watch... An emotionally fraught psychological thriller and a shrewd examination of family life - and the evil that can lie beneath. "

iluffsryanreynolds · 06/07/2016 17:20

Pillars of the earth, by Ken Folett. Historical fiction. It's a big one but I could not put it down.

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 06/07/2016 17:27

An oldie but goody, Dog Eat Dog by Ed Bunker. The film Reservoir Dogs was based on this. Not a 'nice' book, crime obviously, with fairly unlikeable characters, lots of swearing and most definitely not a happy ending. Unput-downable - just what would they do next? I read this in record time.

Charley50 · 06/07/2016 17:42

'The boy that never was' a gripping literary thriller set in Tangiers.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Euginides. Also gripping. I love the word 'gripping'

Littlefrenchmummy · 06/07/2016 17:53

I am pilgrim was brilliant!

redexpat · 06/07/2016 18:07

yy to the rotters club!

The tales of the city series are great.
Also Harry Potter.

mummy2zni · 06/07/2016 18:08

Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness - Alexandra Fuller

scarednoob · 06/07/2016 18:10

"the reluctant fundamentalist". genuinely unputdownable!

dexy24 · 06/07/2016 18:16

Anything by Donna Tartt but her The Secret History is especially good.

septembersunshine · 06/07/2016 18:37

I would go with any Paulina Simons book.

I especially loved 'Tully' and defiantly read 'The Bronze Horseman' and subsequent books. I rarely re-read but have done so many times with her books. 'The Girl in Times Square' is also fab.

Otherwise try 'The Gargoyle' and 'The Night Circus'. Love reading!

autumnboys · 06/07/2016 18:40

Hex.

BipBippadotta · 06/07/2016 18:42

Another for The Rotters' Club, and anything by Jonathan Coe. Anything by Elena Ferrante. Anything by Marylinne Robinson.

bakeoffcake · 06/07/2016 18:42

I second the recommendation if "I let you go" by Claire MacIntosh. It has a twist which hits you so hard you cannot stop reading!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 06/07/2016 18:43

I loved the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, I could not bear to put the books down, loved them!

Claraoswald36 · 06/07/2016 18:43

Seconding kate Atkinson if you don't want a happy ending they are quite gripping

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/07/2016 18:44

I agree with A Thousand Splendid Suns. Read that over two days. The other books I've done that with are We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, which I loved; The Revenant (have never seen the film); The Virgin Suicides (have never seen that film either).
