Cowboys and Indians.....offensive?

Yesterday was the teachers strike, so I took my son to Gulliver's World in Warrington. Gulliver's world has hardly been updated since the 1980s, however I like this because it has a retro feel to it and reminds me of when I went there as a child. Most of the signage is from the eighties.
Anyhow there was a couple there who were clearly unimpressed by its dated appearance. We were in the Wild West part of the park and there is a large sign that says Cowboys and Indians. The woman started pointing and said she could not believe in 2016 they would have such a politically incorrect sign.
I was a bit surprised. Is Cowboys and Indians now racist and offensive? It is the first I have heard of this.

Maybe you should. Wink

sorenofthejnaii · 06/07/2016 19:51

I don't go into maths threads and make people feel inadequate for not knowing how to do algebra

Go on, do a BODMAS thread Grin

UmbongoUnchained · 06/07/2016 19:53

I fear that would not end well Grin

EvansOvalPies · 06/07/2016 19:55

Hardly anyone would join in (I just Googled the children's version, and am lost already) Grin

I've started a thread on history people should know. There's lots of history on there and it just goes to show how much there is that people don't know

Iamthegreatest1 · 06/07/2016 19:57

Umbongo thats a fantastic idea.

NeedACleverNN · 06/07/2016 20:00

There's a lot of finger pointing going on when there shouldn't be.

Unless you are a real history buff, there is a lot you don't know. Even the stuff you do know is changing because of new discoveries.

For example, I don't know if it's true or not, but the latest research on the pyramids showed it wasn't slaves that built it but dedicated workers.

History is always changing with new facts and information and everything you do know is pieced together from everyone's perspective. It will never be 100% accurate

UmbongoUnchained · 06/07/2016 20:01

soren that's a great idea I'll have a look :)

ExitPursuedByABear · 06/07/2016 20:04

That's going to be one big thread

sorenofthejnaii · 06/07/2016 20:05

That's why I like BBC4. From what I know, it was the farmers who worked on the land who were recruited when the Nile was flooded and they got paid.

History is fascinating. Then again, so is science. And geography. Politics is ok but it's very interesting at the moment.

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2016 20:06

It's not really history though. I mean, I know it is history and happened in the past and everything but it's more like politics and psychology and what made us the people we are today and understanding of racism and sociology and understanding of oppression..........You don't need the detailed facts to understand What happens when people colonise other countries.......

NeedACleverNN · 06/07/2016 20:09

No. Taking over another country is mostly common sense in what happens (I have seen Pocahontas Grin)

But not everyone does know that. Not everyone thinks that, because one country is one way, another country won't be the same.

I'm not communicating it very well really but what I'm trying to say is what should be obvious isn't always obvious

UmbongoUnchained · 06/07/2016 20:10

Haha exit I am quite pregnant and don't think I can handle the stress of conducting a mass bodmas lesson!

Coatgate · 06/07/2016 20:10

Yeah, why let facts get in the way Confused

NeedACleverNN · 06/07/2016 20:11

Please no maths!! Someone posted a thread in chat about year 9 maths and both me and dh were completely lost Sad

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2016 20:15

I am sorry to bang on about this, but where did people think the native Americans went? Do they ever wonder why there aren't lots of them around today? Same for native Australians..........

limon · 06/07/2016 20:18

Yes its offensive and disrespectful of the American holocaust.

NeedACleverNN · 06/07/2016 20:20

Having babies with colonisers is a thought there Bertrend

sorenofthejnaii · 06/07/2016 20:24

Ever heard of Neanderthal people?

genographic.nationalgeographic.com/neanderthal/

Wiped out and probably cross bred with the homo Sapiens from Africa?

NeedACleverNN · 06/07/2016 20:27

I wanted I say cross bred and breeding but thought it made us sound too animal like Grin

NoMudNoLotus · 06/07/2016 20:29

Offensive.

Hence me never letting my DS play "Cowboys & Indians".

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2016 20:30

So in the space of a 100 years a whole race integrated so completely with another that the first virtually disappeared?

Would it be acceptable to say "I just didn't know about the Holocaust"?

sorenofthejnaii · 06/07/2016 20:30

The Australian stolen generation seems more 'close' to me (if that's the right word) as it was the British involved and the British influence. I've also spent a lot more time in Australia.

Films like Rabbit Proof fence and Australia were eye opening and this was very recent history.

You have to wonder what people in the UK knew about such events.

NeedACleverNN · 06/07/2016 20:31

Well considering there are thousands of people who now believe the holocaust never happened and it was a big hoax, saying you didn't know about it isn't such a big leap Hmm

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2016 20:33

I am very old and my mother had me late in life. But she knew people as a young woman who genuinely thought shooting native Australians wasn't a crime and who were baffled when they were taken to court for doing it.
