to think this isn't ok at breakfast club?

My children both go to breakfast club Monday to Friday and are there by 8am so that I can get to work on time. They have breakfast there so that they don't have to get up so early at home. I happened to stay a little longer dropping them off yesterday and saw what they are given for 'breakfast' it was 1 piece of (heavily) buttered (Marg) toast and a carton of fruit juice.

AIBU to think this isn't a)enough b)very healthy??? I am prepared to be told that if I don't like it I should give them breakfast at home which is what I'm going to do now but still!! This is supposed to give children a good start to their day no? Also they charge for breakfast so I would expect cereal, yogurt maybe the odd piece of fruit?!

YNBU. How much does it cost you. I imagine. It's not not cheap

That's a crap breakfast.

farageisacunt · 29/06/2016 07:39

That's a crap breakfast.

Bottomchops · 29/06/2016 07:39

Mine aren't in breakfast club yet; but I'd expect toast, milk, fruit and cereal as standard.

Samoyedy · 29/06/2016 07:40

The breakfast club my DC goes to is free, with free food, they have toast, crumpets, fruit and a drink of juice. I give him breakfast at home anyway cuz he says he doesn't like their food Hmm I would have expected some fruit at least, especially if I was paying for it! Why don't you ask them? Schools are meant to be big on healthy eating now aren't they!? We've just been told no crisps, chocolate or biscuits allowed to be taken in for lunch/snacks Confused

SpiceLinerandHoneyLove · 29/06/2016 07:40

YANBU and don't put up with anyone trying to lay blame for you sending your children to a breakfast club so you can get to work and pay the rent/mortgage.
Nutritionally bread and marg isn't great. Could you put some juice, fruit, granola bars or yoghurt in their bags that they can eat at the club in addition to what they are offered? That doesn't take a second. Although I appreciate you still have to pay for the food the club provides.

hat's very little to be honest. i know that our 7 year old will have a slice of toast and a bowl of cereal / porridge each morning. a single slice of toast is very little.

farageisacunt · 29/06/2016 07:41

Oops.

How much do you pay?

I would expect some fruit along with that at least.

DS used to go to breakfast club at school years ago and they had choices. Cereal, toast, fruit.

TeenAndTween · 29/06/2016 07:42

Is that what all the children were given, or did you just see your DCs' breakfast?

Is it possible perhaps that there is a range of breakfast, but the staff know what your children actually choose to eat?

Swissgemma · 29/06/2016 07:43

My 11 month old eats more than that for breakfast! Today he had a banana, porridge, a mango yoghurt and a smoothie!

NoFuchsGiven · 29/06/2016 07:44

Do you not ask your dc what they have had for breakfast? How long have they been going?

It could be possible they get all the toast out first then bring out the other stuff.

bigkidsdidit · 29/06/2016 07:45

No, that's crap. Ds's has cereal, toasted waffles, bananas and apples and juice or milk. I pay £4 for an hour.

KayJBee · 29/06/2016 07:48

If that's all that's on offer, that's not good. If its what your children chose our of a range of things, I'm not sure there's much you can do. Also, do you know that's what they have every day or could it be that they have different things on different days?
Fwiw, ours costs £5, open from 7.30, everyday there is cereal, toast, fruit, yoghurt, juice, milk or water. Often they will also have crumpets/muffins/croissants/porridge. Mine always have breakfast before they go too.

makeitpink · 29/06/2016 07:49

It's £4.35 per child (which includes child care from 8am - 8.50am and breakfast). It's one WHOLE slice of bread and when I asked if that's all they give them the teacher person looked at me as though I'd grown an extra head!!

All the children seemed to have the same. I will check again today!!

I'd be calling Ofsted if I were you OP, that's not healthy or filling.

throwingpebbles · 29/06/2016 07:52

Yanbu.
Ours get toast, crumpets, pancakes, fruit and fruit juice /water

Gizlotsmum · 29/06/2016 07:53

My daughter goes to breakfast club and they have a choice of cereals, porridge, toast with jam, honey, beans or eggs, apple juice and orange juice and milk to drink. They are allowed 2 things so for example beans on toast and cereal plus a drink...

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 29/06/2016 07:53

£4.35 per child for one sweaty piece of toast and a drink of juice. Are they actually for real.

Gizlotsmum · 29/06/2016 07:54

Oh and that's £1:50 a child from 7:45... I feel really lucky now

pictish · 29/06/2016 07:55

No way! our breakfast club is one pound per child and offers a selection of cereal, toast toppings, fruit juice and a bowl of fruit too.

Pengweng · 29/06/2016 07:55

I would check with who ever is in charge and ask what they provide as that doesn't seem to be enough and I would be surprised if the kids can concentrate if that's all they have to eat. Maybe it was a bad day and they had run out of lots of things? I know on mondays the DTs some times have raisins instead of fruit as the fruit delivery sometimes doesn't show up until after snack time.
The DTs aren't old enough for breakfast club but i know the staff who run it and they provide cereal, toast, fruit, milk and water. Sometimes they do hot breakfast of scrambled eggs or beans on toast depending on what they have left and if the kids ask for it. It's £4 for an hour.

Creampastry · 29/06/2016 07:57

Do the adverts or the brochure for the club give any details as to what the breakfast would include?

Backingvocals · 29/06/2016 07:57

My children have a slice of toast for breakfast. That's normal for primary age I think (and neither of them is skinny. I'm always amazed by how much some other kids are allowed to eat and they are a lot thinner than mine but that's a whole other thread).

But they have it with peanut butter for protein which I guess they can't do at school. If there are no cereals perhaps they should offer some cheese as well?

YANBU btw despite my comments. It's expensive and they should do better. Fwiw our breakfast club is £5 for the same time and they have loads of cereals and waffles etc. I have a problem with that as its all really unhealthy and far more than they get at home but some days needs must.

FankEweVeryMuch · 29/06/2016 07:58

They have toast, cereal, raisins, juice and water at our schopl's breakfast club. It starts from 8am and costs £2 so I always give something extra before we leave if my kids go to it.
