to think this isn't ok at breakfast club?

My children both go to breakfast club Monday to Friday and are there by 8am so that I can get to work on time. They have breakfast there so that they don't have to get up so early at home. I happened to stay a little longer dropping them off yesterday and saw what they are given for 'breakfast' it was 1 piece of (heavily) buttered (Marg) toast and a carton of fruit juice.

AIBU to think this isn't a)enough b)very healthy??? I am prepared to be told that if I don't like it I should give them breakfast at home which is what I'm going to do now but still!! This is supposed to give children a good start to their day no? Also they charge for breakfast so I would expect cereal, yogurt maybe the odd piece of fruit?!

I think that is very expensive for a slice of toast!

Sara107 · 30/06/2016 22:27

We pay £4 for breakfast club. They get a choice of cereals, and can have toast with jam, peanut butter, lemon curd. Not sure what drinks are offered, or fruit. dD has her breakfast before she goes, so I always assumed she wasn't eating there. But then realised that she happily tucks into a second meal! So definitely one piece of toast is not an adequate breakfast for a growing child.

Oakmaiden · 30/06/2016 22:31

My children only get a slice of buttered toast and water in Breakfast club. (or Early Birds, as their school call it).

They only charge 20p though.

Believeitornot · 30/06/2016 22:32

You're not paying just for breakfast though - paying for them to be looked after? So it isn't £4 for a slice of toast.

Breakfast club is probably a bit misleading - before school club might make more sense. They don't just eat breakfast for 50 mins do they!?

PterodactylToenails · 30/06/2016 22:33

My DD hates breakfast she just won't eat first thing, it is a nightmare trying to coax her to eat something before school!

nocakes · 30/06/2016 22:44

Ours is £3 for 40 mins with no breakfast provided! Apple or raisins and juice or water. Only opens at 8 so they are not pretending to be a breakfast club but it seems expensive compared to others on here.

serin · 30/06/2016 22:52

Ours were once given an all time low of chicken flavoured noodles on toast.

For breakfast. Confused

For entertainment DD used to listen into the carers conversations about their relationships and say things to me like "What is domestic abuse" when she came home.

£4.80 per hour.

SomeDaysIDontGiveAMonkeys · 01/07/2016 00:52

YANBU That's a Rubbish breakfast. I envisage them being arsey so is it possible for you to send them with z packed brekkie that you could put together the night before. Maybe yogurt and fruit and then they can have marg toast there? I found that banana muffins I made at the weekend lasted all week for breakfasts. They also freeze well. Would they like fruit and yogurt smoothies that you could make the night before and shore on plastic smoothie lidded cups? I know it's z pain and you shouldn't have to if they're attending a breakfast club that is supposed to provide brekkie, but in my experience I learnt which battles to fight.

SomeDaysIDontGiveAMonkeys · 01/07/2016 00:57

P.s you deffo need to get The Breakfast Club on DVD it's a real feel good film Wink. Oh and don't you dare feel guilty about being a working mum. Flowers

Haudyerwheesht · 01/07/2016 01:31

My two don't go to breakfast club but they're 5 and 9. A slice of toast would be fine for the little one - she doesn't each much first thing but ds (9) would be starving on that. At home he has a BIG bowl of porridge and a banana and yogurt and sometimes babybels and / or grapes or tomatoes too. He'd moan at me though if he'd been hungry by break so I'd have known - he has never knowingly missed an opportunity for a moan particularly regarding how hungry he is (and he's skin and bone)

Fwiw OP I'm a sahm and I don't think there's anything wrong with your kids being in clubs etc whilst you work. It's a good example for the kids. I feel guilty for being a sahm since my 5 year old said yesterday 'I'm not going to work when I grow up I'll just have a husband' Blush so yeah get shit about that. Guilt = motherhood.

makeitpink · 01/07/2016 06:19

Serin that sounds awful!!! I think when they hand you your baby in the labour ward they also give you a great big bag of guilt and you just keep adding to it!! We are all doing our best.

I haven't read all the thread but I pay £4 from 8 o clock. There is no breakfast at all although they do different activities. I think it's extortionate but I have no choice as I am rural. When I had two dc there it was eye watering.

ilovechocolate07 · 01/07/2016 06:52

When my kids went they had a choice, have your kids chosen this particular breakfast in this instance? Although, I think that a piece of toast is sufficient. At home we have toast or cereal. Also, a lot of breakfast clubs are run externally. They need to pay their staff, sometimes pay for premises, buy food in and have insurance not to mention activities to keep the children occupied. It is expensive but I don't think there's much profit in it. The government should be subsidising these clubs.

makeitpink · 01/07/2016 06:56

It's run by the school. And no there isn't any choice. They seem to make a set breakfast each day (toast, egg on toast, beans on toast etc etc) and that's all that's on offer. I realise that I am paying for childcare as well I'm not overly concerned about the cost I just want them to have a good breakfast every day and I thought that this would be the best choice for them.

Dontanalyseit · 01/07/2016 07:05

My dc are not fussy eaters but neither of them like the toast at school (separate schools) as it's cheap butter/marg slapped on a dried up bit of bread.

When I worked in a school we offered free breakfast but the quality was awful eg the value range of cereals and uht milk. I wouldn't have eaten it and only the children who were desperate did.

makeitpink · 01/07/2016 07:24

Oh that's awful! I would have to take them all home and feed them!!

YANBU
Our breakfast club has cereal, toast, fruit, yoghurt and then depending on the sausage sarnies, bacon sarnies, waffles, crumpets, malt loaf etc etc and fruit juice.
They have to have toast or cereal before they move on to anything else.
My kids are slim and active, and one slice of toast would not keep them going until lunch.

mummyknowsbest2010 · 01/07/2016 11:03

It costs £4.95 for my son to go to breakfast club from 7.45am
He has breakfast at home at 5.45am which is shreddies and Weetabix 'mix' every day (even at 8 he's still an early riser) so by 8am he's ready for breakfast number 2 :-)
At breakfast club he has buttered toast and apple juice.
It's expensive but it means I can be at my school on time in the morning.

QueenImpatient · 01/07/2016 12:14

makeitpink I don't have much to say about the breakfast club thing BUT what I do have to say is keep doing what you're doing. I'm a single stay at home mum and I think that's the toughest job in the world, I can't even imagine working full time & being a mum 24/7 on top f that! You deserve a round of applause, not any kind of guilt trip! My bubba is only 2 so there's no school for her yet but when the time comes I'll do what I have to to make the money to provide for my family.
Keep doing you Smile XX

SuperFlyHigh · 01/07/2016 12:55

It's the choices OP I wouldn't be happy with.

They should get a choice of eg porridge, crumpets, toast, fruit, egg, beans etc.

Mind you most mornings for breakfast I have toast and marmite or granola and yogurt.

PizzaFlavouredCupcake · 01/07/2016 20:33

YANBU specially since you are paying for breakfast, I doubt it's cheap. Have a word and ask about it.

hotdiggedy · 01/07/2016 20:44

Wow, I think i am going to book myself into a breakfast club. All the options on offer are better than a bed and breakfast!

jamdonut · 01/07/2016 23:26

We do fruit juice ( not squash), toast and butter or jam first and then a variety of cereals with milk to follow. (No different to what I have myself, before I get to school!) There isn't time for anything else. It's run by TAs, from 8am to 8:50.
It's £1.50 per session and anyone can turn up to it on any day.

Some children take forever just to eat two slices of toast. We've never had any complaints, and we run it as a favour to parents who need to get to work early. If people started complaining, I think we'd just stop doing it.

Some of the children who attend wouldn't actually get any breakfast at all if they didn't come.

LellyMcKelly · 02/07/2016 06:05

I'd certainly be expecting toast, cereal and fruit as a minimum.

a7mints · 02/07/2016 06:52

All my DC have a slice of toast and juice for breakfast and they are 11 to 20 yes old.
