to think this isn't ok at breakfast club?

My children both go to breakfast club Monday to Friday and are there by 8am so that I can get to work on time. They have breakfast there so that they don't have to get up so early at home. I happened to stay a little longer dropping them off yesterday and saw what they are given for 'breakfast' it was 1 piece of (heavily) buttered (Marg) toast and a carton of fruit juice.

AIBU to think this isn't a)enough b)very healthy??? I am prepared to be told that if I don't like it I should give them breakfast at home which is what I'm going to do now but still!! This is supposed to give children a good start to their day no? Also they charge for breakfast so I would expect cereal, yogurt maybe the odd piece of fruit?!

OP posts:

They should be offering a range of cereals and spreads for toast, fruit, juice and milk.

LC01 · 29/06/2016 11:57

Wow, the charges vary so much. My DD's is £5 for 7.30 until 8.40 when they are walked across the road to school. They give a choice of toast or crumpet/muffin, a selection of cereals, plus yogurt, raisins, pepperoni and cheese. Only water or milk and no hot drinks. They can pretty much have what they want as long as they eat it all.

stopgap · 29/06/2016 11:58

My almost five-year-old has toast, an omelette, an apple, and sometimes also a smoothie or a Greek yoghurt. I also eat a huge breakfast. I'm a rake and he's only 39lbs and tall with it. He would be so grumpy with only a slice of toast to start the day!

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 29/06/2016 12:25

£3 here from 7:30 am.

There is always a hot breakfast. Bacon bap, beans on toast or scrambled egg etc

Cereals (not happy they are all sugar laden but at least there is a choice )

Milk, OJ or squash

Toast with spreads - jam, honey, butter

the only time this changes is at the end of the term where it becomes more of a pot luck thing as they use up supplies.

1 piece of toast really isn't enough IMO.

I've added approx calorie needs for kids and if you think 1 piece of toast (around 100cals) with spread (20 cals) and a small juice carton ( up to 50cals depending if its the sugar free version or not) is around 120-160 calories it is no where near 'enough' for a breakfast if you split it up into reasonable sized meals.

And even with a piece of fruit at break time is unlikely to keep the average child going until lunch time.

to think this isn't ok at breakfast club?

That's very little. My DD goes to breakfast club and has cereal and toast with juice. Often has scrambled egg and beans on toast etc on cold days instead of cereal. She loves it. I'd definitely be checking if you're paying for it! £5 a week here too which is quite cheap. DSs school is twice as much.

NonnoMum · 29/06/2016 12:55

Where are all these £1 breakfast clubs? I have to send my three to breakfast club and it is £4.85 each.
It runs from 7.30 until school starts at 8.50am.
If you are not there by 8am, the cereals get put away (cos God help the workers might need the best part of an hour to wash 10 bowls). If they are not there by 8.30 they get zilch (slightly more understandably).
Quite fondly, it drive me insane. I've spent over £15 each morning before i've earned any money and my kids might have only eaten a bit of crumpet.

Chocolateteabag · 29/06/2016 13:01

Our preschool (which is next to school but not run by it) charges £5 for 8-8.50am breakfast club - the children get choice of cereal/toast - with choice of jam etc/sometimes pancakes etc and fruit juice/water/milk - as much or as little as they want.

We are rural and it is £££ compared to most but the preschool is a not for profit charity so needs the money.

OP - yours sounds really stingy I would complain!

Fulltimemummy85 · 29/06/2016 13:07

Healthier than what a lot of people have mentioned here!

TransformersRobotsInDaSky · 29/06/2016 13:12

That is definitely not enough. My 6 year old has 2 weetabix, a slice of toast and fruit every morning. I would expect him to have all of this available to choose from if I paid for a breakfast club but I have no personal experience of what they are usually given.

leghoul · 29/06/2016 13:13

£3 for an hour, one type of cereal, one type of juice, or toast or crumpet/s.

GlittterFreak · 29/06/2016 13:14

When I went to breakfast club in the last year of Primary (2003). It cost 50p a morning and you'd get a choice of cereal or porridge, a slice of toast (butter, jam or cheese), a cup of tea and glass of fruit juice. Everything was done in a microwave/ toaster in the hall. That's ridiculous, a slice of buttered toast isn't good enough. Complain! Wonder if the other parents know!? Angry

zofranks · 29/06/2016 13:15

YANBU but my dd goes to a day nursery 2 days a week, breakfast is 1.50, lunch 3.00 & tea 3.00 - she always eats before she goes as breakfast is a glass of water, slice of toast & a bowl of cereal, lunch & tea god knows but she always comes home both hungry & thirsty - I can't bloody wait till she starts school in september, pisses me off 7.50 a day on food for a 4 year old FFS - I can feed the family for that! They do say it's all home grown/cooked & organic but I bet if I dug a bit deeper it isn't

emilythomson313 · 29/06/2016 13:16

This is unbelievable! I wonder how your kids haven't complained about it so far! Definitely better to prepare their breakfast at home!

aprilanne · 29/06/2016 13:18

my friend tells me it is now £1.50 but for that they get toast /fruit yougurt and milk and child care 8 until 9 .i would be seriously complaining

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 13:22

Fucking hell! How in god's name do children eat so much? DS can barely manage a small piece of toast and you've all got kids who eat toast, cereal and fruit!Portion control?

Portion control yourself, a small piece of toast is a totally inadequate breakfast for a child. Give the kid some fruit at least, and wind your neck in criticising others.

ColinFirthsGirth · 29/06/2016 13:22

I am amazed how many of you have breakfast clubs available. None of the local schools around me offer it. If mine had gone to one though I would definitely expect them to offer more than a slice of bread and a drink.

BuntyBlue · 29/06/2016 13:27

Our school started running a breakfast club a few weeks ago, its £1.50 per child - 7:50 until 8:40 includes toast, 3 types of cereal to choose from, fruit, apple or orange juice.

I wouldn't be happy with just a slice of toast every day. It's bad enough what's on offer for school dinners, without an unhealthy breakfast too.

woodsies1975 · 29/06/2016 13:35

That's not on! My two go to one at their school which costs me £2 per child per day. They used to have loads on offer but it got really popular and my son in particular ate his body weight in toasties and I think the club started to lose money. They have now implemented a system whereby each child gets three tokens so can have three things from toast, cereal, yogurt and fruit. Drinks are freely available. They love it. It used to have muffins (of the cake variety) and those syrup pancakes as well as cheese and ham toasties but that all stopped, I wasn't too happy about them being on offer in the first place.

RepentAtLeisure · 29/06/2016 14:18

Fruit juice is expensive, especially in cartons and not particularly healthy - are these DCs cleaning their teeth afterwards - I would be surprised if they are.

My dentist said that you shouldn't clean your teeth until at least 30 minutes after drinking juice. The acid weakens tooth enamel, so brushing can damage it.

Highlandfling80 · 29/06/2016 14:29

I think our is similar but they have a choice of cereal or toast. We pay nearly £5.00 but thankfully we don't use it much

MewlingQuim · 29/06/2016 14:33

Wow Shock

DD starts school in september and their breakfast club is 50p a day. Breakfast is extra but at e.g. 40p for beans on toast it is still a hell of a lot less than some of you are paying.

Chorister · 29/06/2016 15:10

At my children's school breakfast club is from 810-9 and costs 35p per child.

For that they can have a choice of cereal and milk (usually 3-4 options) a slice of toast with butter/jam and either milk or fruit juice to drink.

NonnoMum · 29/06/2016 15:12

Honestly. please tell me. where are the 50p breakfast clubs? are they run by charities? are they in EU subsidised areas?genuine question.

Welliwooster · 29/06/2016 16:00

Our breakfast club is free and my DS has beans on toast every day. There is cereal & toast too and on Fridays they do full English breakfast! YANBU.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 29/06/2016 16:02

I think a lot of it depends on who's running the breakfast club (i.e. school or outside provider) and what it's stated aim is and so where funding comes from.
For example, I know that at DS's school (deprived area, high rates of lateness and low attendence) the aim of the breakfast club is to get the kids actually into school in time to start the school day, hence the low price and special events. DS loves going and it's brilliant for me as I can start work half an hour earlier twice a week for little layout on childcare.

I suspect that for shools in areas of higher income where working parents really need the breakfast club for childcare, and so where there is increased demand, they can charge more to actually cover the costs.
