Too many pets?

DownUnderBound · 26/06/2016 22:38

Can I ask what you would consider 'too many pets' ? I am being tagged in Facebook things for crazy cat lady memes regulary ....quite often people make reference to 'ALL' my pets (said as if there are two million) so I just wondered what animals you all have and what your personal idea is of what makes too many? I'm watching animal hoarders and it got me thinking Grin

The most we had at one time were

2 dogs
2 cats
1 rabbit
1 Guinea pig
1 tortoise
3 hamsters
Tank of fish.

Now we have no pets.

whippetwoman · 27/06/2016 13:20

We have three cats and one dog. As mentioned up thread, three cats staring at you around food time can be oppressive but they are brilliant and I love them. One of them likes to lie along a random stair and is a continual and potentially serious trip hazard. One is elderly and fairly evil but I like her style.

The dog is harder work, but is now fairly elderly and is kept in line by the cats. I wouldn't have any more than we do now due to the cost is pet insurance, vet bills and flea treatment.

GoodGirlGoneWrong · 27/06/2016 13:21

We have 2 large breed dogs, fully insured, vaccinated etc and 3 cats, the eldest cats (they were from the same little) is nearly 15.

We used to have a gecko (he died recently at the ripe old age of 20)

That's enough for us, the cats are no longer insured due to them wanting £90 per cat so cancelled the insurance and put the money away we used to pay into a bank account this was 5 years ago now and I have dipped into it once.

Dogs cost about £12-15 a month to feed.

Cats cost about £ 4 per week.

6-8 weekly flea and worming treatment is about £25 for all of them I bulk buy to make it cheaper.

Vaccinations cost £18 per dog for a booster and annual health check. Cats are no longer vaccinated as they spend most of the time on the landing watching the world go by, and only venture into the garden.

Anymore and I couldn't cope with, plus it's a battle with fur I generally have to hoover everyday and the wet dog smell in the winter is a nightmare!!!

A friend of mine has 8 dogs and I doubt they get the care they need (harsh I know)

BeingHuman · 27/06/2016 13:38

I think so long as there feed and well looked after then it's no one else's business. Have at it OP!

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 27/06/2016 13:45

I'm super jealous of those of you with a menagerie. Envy Unfortunately I truly can't devote that much time to more.

I have one asshole dog (I love her, but she is,) and a cat who lives predominantly outdoors, most likely because of asshole dog. If asshole dog were not such an asshole, I'd want more one day but I think I'm done after her.

I'd have many cats, though.

dizzyfucker · 27/06/2016 13:49

I think it depends on your home and job. We're farmers, no one has ever said we have too many pets (5 cats and 3 dogs) I don't count other non-food and working animals as pets but many would. If we moved to a bungalow in Staines it would be too many pets and we would be ridiculed,

So it's not just how many, but where and why.

CivicBlue1 · 27/06/2016 14:00

We have 3 medium gun dog breed dogs (2 are fosters), a cat and a tank full of fish. In a 3 bed semi with a decent sized garden. 3 adults (me, dh and dd(19)). We may look to get a pair of bunnies or Guinea pigs in the future.

EleanorAbernathy · 27/06/2016 14:17

I've got 10 cats :)

It doesn't seem like too many, they tend to spread themselves out throughout the house, I can't actually see any of them at the moment (can hear one munching some food in the kitchen).

It only seems like there's a lot of them just before feeding time when they tend to gather and get a bit starey....

DownUnderBound · 27/06/2016 14:25

pardonwhat did you live on a farm/lot of land? Sounds like my fantasy lifestyle! Not my end terrace and too small garden Sad

Costa how on earth do you end up with fifteen cats? Sounds like some kind of fluffy feline heaven to me Smile

FiveHoursSleep · 27/06/2016 14:32

We have 10 pets and 6 people.
2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 rats, a hamster, a snake and now a budgie that someone found.
I walk the dogs and make sure everything is wormed and deflead, the kids feed and clean everything else up/ out.

jessica132 · 27/06/2016 14:42

I have 3 cats at home and we meow to each other and are really getting along. There's no such thing as "too many pets" or "too many tequilas". Imma get drunk as hell and then Imma gossip about boys with my kitties. Grin

Lunar1 · 27/06/2016 14:43

I bet you could fit chickens in your garden!

DownUnderBound · 27/06/2016 14:48

lunar1. I really would love a pair of miniature appleyard ducklings, not sure about space and noise?

OP posts:
Lunar1 · 27/06/2016 15:04

No idea about ducks, but hens are lovely pets.

AppleSetsSail · 27/06/2016 15:08

Aren't ducks terribly mean?

EleanorAbernathy · 27/06/2016 15:40

Costa is making my feel like an amateur cat lady Sad

(considering 6 more cats.....)

Costacoffeeplease · 27/06/2016 15:53

They're all waifs and strays that either we, or someone else, has literally picked up off the street (I'm not in the U.K.)

My latest is a newborn I'm bottle feeding (so 16 at the moment!)

Costacoffeeplease · 27/06/2016 15:54

Here she is

Too many pets?
Laiste · 27/06/2016 16:08

Ah bless Grin

My max was:

2 cats (lived till 17 and 19!).
2 dogs
15 guinea pigs
one rabbit
fish in a pond

(3 kids and a husband)

The guinea pigs got to that amount as we had 4 or our own, then rescued a few. Two of those few turned out to be pregnant as they hadn't been removed from their brothers early enough. We kept them all until they died of old age. The rabbit turned up with one of the rescued piggies and we kept her as well. (separately). The fish in the pond came with a house purchase.

Now (10 years later) i'm down to just 2 cats and a rabbit and life is simpler. But i miss the piggies and the dog walks.

EyeRollChampion · 27/06/2016 16:09

We have 3 cats, 2 house rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, a hog island boa constrictor and about 30 malawi cichlids. But I am signed off work permanently and have the time and devotion to spoil them all rotten. Everything is kept scrupulously clean. When we move in a couple of years or so to a larger property I plan on getting more and dp and the kids are totally on board Grin I'd say more than you can responsibly manage/insure/pay for is too many.

Ask my dad though and he'd say one was too many. He'd rather we had more space (he's a grumpy old minimalist) but I'm in my mid thirties and have my own home so it's fun just to wind him up and send him pictures of the new fur/fin/scale babies Grin

LoisEinhorn · 27/06/2016 16:10

3 cats, 2 kittens, 1 rat and 1 gerbil. That's not as many as we used to have. We used to have chickens too

EyeRollChampion · 27/06/2016 16:11

Lol @ "amateur cat lady"

Junosmum · 27/06/2016 16:33

We have 3 cats. It's too many (we had 2, one got run over so got the remaining one a friend and then ended up taking in a disabled stray, so not 3 by choice).

When I was growing up we had 2 cats, 3 dogs, 5 chickens and 2 horses. It wasn't too many but we had land and a big house.

mypropertea · 28/06/2016 06:45

As long as they are all looked after, there is no too many. On the other hand if for example your at work all day and don't get someone to check on it, one dog could be too many pets.
