to think that Nicola Sturgeon is a liar

She has said 'Holyrood could veto Brexit'

www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-36633244

However, the Scotland Act 1998, from which all her powers are derived, makes it clear that foreign affairs, including, explicitly, relations with the EU, is not something over which the Scottish Parliament has any authority.

She says ' would there have to be a legislative consent motion' (i.e. a motion accepting UK legislation in a devolved area to be valid in Scotland). The answer is no, as foreign relations are not devolved.

She obviously knows this, why is she lying?

I went back and viewed the full original interview. That is not what she said - its misreporting. Tut tut BBC (and I say that as a former BBC journo. I would expect them to get a formal complaint from the First Minister's office for that one.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 26/06/2016 16:25

ocelot41 unfortunately the BBC have form for mis quoting / mis representing anything and everything the SNP says. I think that's why a lot of yes voters are still very skeptical to believe anything the BBC reports. (But of course if we dare say that we will be accused of wearing tinfoil hats)

shakeatailfeather · 26/06/2016 16:43

What Boysdontcry said

ocelot41 · 26/06/2016 19:42

Nope, no tinfoil hats Boys. They really misrepresented what she said and it was a very leading line of questioning. If I had done either I would expect to get my arse kicked

StrictlyMumDancing · 26/06/2016 20:43

She was asked directly and instantly said of course. Then she backtracked a bit and said she would consider it if in the best interests of the Scottish people. If it wasn't something she was considering before I bet she is now.

ocelot41 · 26/06/2016 21:33

She talked about withholding consent not giving a veto. That's legally very different.

Pettywoman · 26/06/2016 21:57

Gove, Boris and Farage are liars. Sturgeon is just doing everything she can to sort this mess out.

Savemefromwine · 26/06/2016 22:02

I think she's obsessed with independence but bloody wish she was English and heading the labour party! She's a class act and is a bloody good politician:

blaeberry · 26/06/2016 22:31

She is not trying to sort out any mess - she is trying to use it to gain independence.

PanEuropeanPan · 26/06/2016 22:36

No, she is trying to protect Scotland's best interests. Something English politicians seem to have forgotten when looking at their own country's interests. They've had a weekend off when the country could least afford that.

She didn't ask for the shit tip England and Wales have delivered, and doesn't want it.

blaeberry · 26/06/2016 22:52

No, she wants independence and she has always seen this referendum as an excuse to hold another indyref. That fact influenced voting in this referendum in Scotland. The result was ideal from her perspective. In her view what is 'best" for Scotland is independence for the sake of independence - economics for example fo not come into it.

ocelot41 · 27/06/2016 06:45

I dont agree. The polls aren't good enough to call a second Indyref yet, there is still the question of the euro, and the Scottish economy still has problems because of its overdependence on oil. This is not the time a canny politician would call a second referendum if she could choose. All the same I am pretty impressed with NCs performance - she is one of the few politicians not hiding and jibbering. Currently a card carrying Labour supporter but will watch carefully and consider defecting when I move back over the border.

kawliga · 27/06/2016 06:57

People I agree with are speaking the absolute truth. I like these people.

People I don't agree with are fucking liars. I hate these people.

Yes, that is the state of politics today. Facts are completely irrelevant. OP doesn't like what Nicola Sturgeon is proposing, therefore OP thinks Nicola Sturgeon is a liar Hmm

Ah, democracy. Everybody gets a say, including people with no reasoning capabilities whatsoever. It is a disaster, but we stick with it because nobody has been able to come up with a better system of government.

ocelot41 · 27/06/2016 07:02

This is the best think piece I have seen so far www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-36635012
