To think the lead members of the Royal family should step up to the plate

Thanks to David Cameron running off with his tail between his legs we are, to quote his words something he DID get right temporarily rudderless.

I know the Royal family aren't supposed to get involved in political matters, but they should be doing something … if it's only to boost morale and promote some sense of unity.

Crazy idea, or not?

Time we had a referendum to get rid of the royals now. Biggest load of parasites this side of the channel.

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 11:25

Well the Queen is the Head of State at a time when the country is in turmoil, she is supposed to preside over the whole system. What message do you think this presents (rightly or wrongly)? 'I have more important things going on than the state of my country'.

Plenty of other people with responsible senior roles in business etc have to miss personal/family occasions when they have a crisis to deal with, why do we expect less of our Head of State? She at least should have stayed away in the circumstances.

RepentAtLeisure · 26/06/2016 11:27

I think Cameron made a smart move. He's left the final decision to the brexit camp, they have to hand over the paperwork. It's inspired.

It's not inspired, it's petty and vindictive, and goes against his previous statement that he would be there to guide us through. Now it seems he's mostly intending to sulk until October and then throw everything into the lap of the new PM. He needs to look in the mirror and remember who wanted this. Which individual promised this to a population who didn't even particularly care at the time?

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 11:28

You think they would have learned from the fallout of Princess Di's death….but they will never learn. They are part of the problem not part of the solution.

Mycatsabastard · 26/06/2016 11:34

put Phil in charge of Foreign affairs.

Princess Anne can run the country, she's brilliant, won't take any bullshit off anyone. I've seen her do 'the look'. She makes Thatcher look like a pussy cat.

Lynnm63 · 26/06/2016 11:39

Cameron is petty. He offered a referendum, expected to lose the election join a coalition with the Lib Dems who'd block it. He had no plan B, when the great unwashed didn't do as they were told he sulked for a couple of hours and took his ball back. He's probably sitting in the nursery complaining to nanny that the beastly plebs gave him a bloody nose.

PanEuropeanPan · 26/06/2016 11:55

Queenie could usefully refuse to give a royal assent to Brexit legislation.

StealthPolarBear · 26/06/2016 12:08

Pan why would she

GhostofFrankGrimes · 26/06/2016 12:10

Cameron is a coward and will go down as the man who wrote Britain's economic suicide note.

PanEuropeanPan · 26/06/2016 12:13

Because it's 1. bonkers and 2. it will lead to the break up of the UK essentially. She could ask herself "I'm now Queen of GB and NI. Is it even sensible to give agreement to this?".

Not saying she won't refuse but she could.

FoggyBottom · 26/06/2016 12:20

Except that, as half-Greek/Germans, they are the "immigrants" that a lot of the xenophobic Leave voters wanted to get rid of.

I expect they're all applying for their German passports as we speak.

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 26/06/2016 12:22

You would think she could give them all a ring and tell them to get out of hiding and speak to the public.

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 12:44

Why can't she speak to the public?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 26/06/2016 12:44

Choices choices! Ooo Andrew has loads of business acumen as do his lovely daughters, although I'm sure they're super busy. Damn. Ooo how about Harry? He can cheeky chappie his way out of anything and Pippa can help smooth the exit talks by baking some delicious tray bakes using mummy's Brexit party cake stands and Brexit table cloths.

PanEuropeanPan · 26/06/2016 12:46

In the event of Queen wishing to express a concern about legislation for Brexit I'd imagine she would do it behind the scenes, to senior civil servants and whatever ratbag of political leaders there are left at the time.

Letmehaveausername · 26/06/2016 12:46

The royals may be able to boost moral in England but I know lots of folk in Scotland don't see them as relevant to us.

They're not our Royal family, there's nothing they could do to boost my moral. If they got involved it would just piss me off tbh, they're nothing but over juiced money grabbing celebrities imvho

I think it's pretty much divided Ego - probs a fair bit on the Leavers side.

loobieloo32 · 26/06/2016 12:51

Ah yes, let's get the royal family involved. I mean it turned out so well when Henry VIII decided to proclaim himself King of Ireland and had practically no long term adverse effects on the unity of the kingdom.

Someone throw me a dingy I'm drowning in sarcasm.

FoggyBottom · 26/06/2016 13:09

Why can't she speak to the public?

I think you have to understand the limits placed on a constitutional monarch. And remember what Walter Bagehot said about the monarchy and mystery.

Livingtothefull · 26/06/2016 18:06

Well there isn't much point having a monarch then if she isn't able to do anything, not even speak (non politically) to the people at a time of crisis. What IS the monarch actually for?

cupidsgame · 26/06/2016 18:07

Princess Anne can run the country, she's brilliant, won't take any bullshit off anyone. I've seen her do 'the look'. She makes Thatcher look like a pussy cat.

I often wonder though, what gives princess Anne the right to have that attitude. All that not suffering fools gladly nonsense. (the rest of us would be called rude or ignorant) What has she done exactly to be entitled to "not take bullshit off anyone". A freeloader like the rest of them, but called hard working because she attends a few more freebies functions than the rest of them.

LaConnerie · 26/06/2016 21:18

Well there isn't much point having a monarch then

Too right.

sue51 · 26/06/2016 21:46

Daft idea. As if we're not in deep enough shit without an unelected, extremely wealthy and politically neutral Queen putting in her say.
