to think if we all want a REAL democracy we need to change our electoral system?

to Proportional Representation or similar?

So many people who voted Leave did so because they feel disenfranchised and our Westminster system plays a massive part in this. many who voted Remain would like a change for the better too.

Being ruled my a party achieving 36.9% of the vote while the millions who vote for smaller parties don't get any MP's means the Westminster is a poor model for proper democratic representation.

I totally agree.

ScarletOverkill · 24/06/2016 12:07

The Lib Dems arranged a vote for that and they lost. It's been done already

RaarSaidTheLion · 24/06/2016 12:09

Totally agree OP.

That vote was pretty much a case of "he who asks the questions holds the power" Scarlett. There are other forms of PR that weren't broached...funnily enough, it was a lame duck variant that was proposed.

VestalVirgin · 24/06/2016 12:19

I agree.

However, in Germany there still are those groups of people who feel disenfranchised and vote for idiotic parties to protest the system. So it won't solve everything.

HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 24/06/2016 12:23

Vestal I can't help but feel we would all be in a much better place now, if UKIP voters, balanced out by the Greens, WEP, SNEP etc, had felt better represented in the first place.

I don't think anything will solve everything. that's not realistic. But people would be better represented in the political process, whatever their views, under PR.

I agree too.

BolshierAryaStark · 24/06/2016 12:27

I agree.

IceBeing · 24/06/2016 12:32

totally agree - I have no idea why the lib dems went for AV which is almost as shit as first past the post.

Proper PR just showed how much extra engagement you can get.

I am very angry/sad at the way the vote went yesterday but I would be fucking livid if it had been done by region and panned out that we were exiting AGAINST the popular vote.

TheNaze73 · 24/06/2016 12:35

Agreed. Think the LibDems tried to pass it under Paddy Ashdown, from memory??

HisNameWasPrinceAndHeWasFunky · 24/06/2016 12:35

oooh so IANBU - :)

What a fantastic democracy we live in. We don't even get a say as to who our PM is going to be. A divided Tory party with 36.9% of votes from 66% of the electorate gets to decide.

RortyCrankle · 24/06/2016 14:33

No thanks. We were given the opportunity to vote on changing the system and the majority voted no.

LurkingHusband · 24/06/2016 14:41

We had our chance in 2011. We clearly rejected changing the voting system.

I said then, I repeat now, there will be not be a chance for another generation at the earliest.

And given recent events, I can't see the UK ever holding another referendum on any matter.
