to think immigration is too high

Net migration hit an all-time record high today, according to the Office of National Statistics:

www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/23/uk-population-grew-half-million-net-migration-ons

AIBU to think that given that England is already the second-most densely populated country of its size on the planet (behind only Bangladesh), that immigration is too high and should be reduced to zero, given that we also have a positive (and booming) natural population increase (deaths have never exceeded births in the UK, except perhaps during war)?

Why on earth would we possibly want to pack more and more people into an ever smaller space?

"Although I live in hope that it's maybe because the majority of people are less objectionable and tiny minded than you?"

It's tiny-minded to not want unlimited population growth now is it?

Awesome.

"There were 828,000 NI registrations to overseas nationals (people paying our taxes) in 2015, an increase of 8% (source: office of national statistics). That's going up too OP. Spoke to a taxi driver today who's been here 6 years and worked out he's paid an average of £300 a month in taxes since then. "

NI registrations do not mean you are paying taxes at all, much less a net overall contributor.

And £300/month in taxes is considerably below the average UK tax bill, and considerably lower than per capita public spending.

"For fuck actual sake will you bigots get your damn heads round the fact the United Kingdom contains three other countries besides bloody England!!!!! "

Um, I think you are missing the point.

Northern Ireland (133 people per square kilometre), Scotland (67 people per square kilometre), and Wales (148 people per square kilometre) are not densely populated.

England, (419 people per square kilometre) which contains the great majority of the UK population, and attracts most of its immigrants - is.

Nigel is that you?

petitpois55 · 23/06/2016 21:36

No OP there are not too many immigrates in the UK. What there is however is people like you who are none too bright. Here's a suggestion for you though,` why don't you emigrate, and do us all a favourSmile

thisisafakename · 23/06/2016 21:39

Hey, OP. Second most densely populated after Bangladesh, huh?

www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0934666.html

Well, 50th most densely populated per square mile, but hey, why let actual facts cloud your clearly thought out argument?

The only dense thing round here seems to be you. Biscuit Biscuit Biscuit

originalusernamefail · 23/06/2016 21:43

Over 65s currently outnumber under 16s. A trend that is set to continue due to ageing population and falling birth rates. We all need to start having babies or we need more immigration to keep the country running / look after us when we are old.

TaIkinPeace · 23/06/2016 21:45

If England is so densely populated, why are parts of Hampshire so empty that its not economic to provide buses or Broadband ?

how about the area of Hampshire that is 27 square miles with a population under 300 (and its a really well known area, just empty).

mamamea · 23/06/2016 21:45

"No OP there are not too many immigrates in the UK. "

What is an immigrate? My post says 'immigration is too high', this is nothing to do with the total number of 'immigrates', but rather a question of rate of change.

" What there is however is people like you who are none too bright. "

Yes, you definitely fall into this category, failing on basic English nouns AND reading comprehension.

The foreign-born population of Britain is in excess of 13%

You do realise that the foreign-BORN population includes your probably beloved Boris Johnson, right? He was not born in the UK. If you happened to go into labour on a holiday to France, your kid would be foreign-born too.

Pettywoman · 23/06/2016 21:47

There are too many journos and politicians cynically promoting fear of immigrants for the good of their own careers.

petitpois55 · 23/06/2016 21:50

Did you vote Leave OP by any chance?Grin

Must people misquote?

What i actually said "the second-most densely populated country of its size ". Most of the world's most densely populated countries are tiny city states, not in any way comparable to England's 130,000+ square kilometres.

And I referred to England, not the UK as a whole. People are not moving to Fort William in their hundreds of thousands.

Dontyoulovecalpol · 23/06/2016 21:50

It's not immigration though is it? It's births and fewer deaths

My son added to the total last year Grin

mamamea · 23/06/2016 21:51

"You do realise that the foreign-BORN population includes your probably beloved Boris Johnson, right?"

I'm not really clear on your point. I was responding to someone who made a clearly false statement on people with ginger hair outnumbering immigrants.

OP posts:
mamamea · 23/06/2016 21:54

"It's not immigration though is it? It's births and fewer deaths"

Actually it's mostly immigration, given that net immigration is higher than the natural rate of population change. My point was that the natural rate of population change (which has been positive for decades) is more than sufficient to replenish and indeed increase the population. We have no need for net immigration as well.

If Britain didn't allow immigrants other than doctors, I wouldn't be allowed to live with my husband, whom I have been wih for almost 5 years now. I have a full time job that pays just above minimum wage, I have a University degree, and I pay British taxes, but I do not (nor am I allowed to) claim any benefits. Please explain to me how I am a detriment to this country. The ignorance in the world is astounding sometimes.

BrexitentialCrisis · 23/06/2016 21:57

I've got an idea to get rid of the forriners that you will love.

Take all the money that sloshes around in our developed, skilled economy. Ship it off to some other place. Watch the people follow it. Bask in the lovely, empty streets, towns and cities that are left behind- devoid of investment, progress and skill sharing.

Yep. People follow money- they always have and they always will. Someone in your family probably did at some stage. I don't disagree for a minute that some parts of Britain feel overcrowded- you can blame years of Tory under investment in public services, health and housing for that- not immigrants.

thisisafakename · 23/06/2016 21:57

Population density is measured in people per square mile. Not all of the countries on there are city-states at all. Who cares whether you think England is the same size as Bangladesh- can you show me a table where England ranks second to Bangladesh?

Also, England is not an independent sovereign state. Firstly, how do you know all immigration is to England? Secondly, there are plenty of sparsely populated areas of England, but also plenty of very large cities.

Anyway, Nige, I suggest you take your racist trolling elsewhere because I don't think you will get much of an audience here. I bet you're also of the kind that doesn't view Americans, Australians and Canadians as 'real immigrants'?

TheoriginalLEM · 23/06/2016 22:01

honestly can't wait till tomorrow when the op and her ilk can crawl back under their rocks. Its getting fucking boring now.

mamamea · 23/06/2016 22:02

" Please explain to me how I am a detriment to this country."

I don't think anyone has claimed that. Around 300,000 Britons emigrate per year, that leaves considerable scope for replenishment - the issue however is that we do not replenish with say, 300,000 immigrants, but rather that we admit double that number.

The number of family visas granted is around 35,000 a year, so a relatively small fraction of the total.

OP the percentage of immigrants in Britain is between 0.5% and 0.8% (if you want to question the statistic, it's highlighted in the link in your first post Hmm) I am no mathematician but yes, I am pretty sure that my saying gingers at 5% make up more than 0.5% would be correct in terms of maths.

TaIkinPeace · 23/06/2016 22:04

mamamea
Boris Johnson is an immigrant : he was born in New York, went to school in Brussels and part of his family are Turkish.

Nigel Farage's wife is an immigrant - she is German

A fair few of the "foreign born" are army kids born in Germany to British forces posted there.

Orwellschild · 23/06/2016 22:06
