Birthday cake at the office

We do a collection for everyone’s birthday in the office and get them a present and a card and the birthday boy/girl brings in some cakes and sweets. Great, right?
Well today it’s my birthday, I baked two cakes last night and brought them in.

A few people made a comment that bringing a homemade cake is being cheap. All others so far have brought in Tesco cakes….

Seriously?? What world do we live in? I do enjoy baking and I thought people would appreciate a homemade cake… AIBU?

Tigger 'Until you'd seen their kitchen'... You'd turn down a piece of homemade cake if you have not personally completed a health and safety inspection. What a life you lead......the neuroses of people on here is breath taking at times.

How weird, not liking or recognising value of homemade things. And probably not at all cheaper!

Just remember one's work colleagues are not people who like us, or people we like, they are just people we work with!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (send me some cake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Thanks

My husband works in a mostly male dominated office, they bring in pies for everyone on their birthdays!

They are weird. Everyone loves a home made cake in our work and it requires more effort than buying one.

Your co-workers have never baked a cake themselves, have they? It's a lot more expensive to bake your own! (And even if it was cheaper - who does this, sniffs at a treat someone else is offering them because it is cheap?)

It's like Bake-Off never happened....

I would be so tempted to get a bit sniffy about the how shop-bought can never compare with homemade when they bring in a tesco one at the next birthday - except of course I wouldn't because it's free cake, and only an ungrateful fucker would complain.

The couple of co-workers who said this are ignorant, ungrateful fuckers. I hope you had a lovely birthday, with your lovely cake, nonetheless!

Happy Birthday OP 🎂🎉🎁How bloody rude! Wow, some people are unbelievable. I hope you told them to bugger off.

That really is strange. We are not allowed to contribute shop bought cake to the school fair. Which is why I won't be contributing anything. The premis is that homemade is better.
In our office most folk are on a diet so recent birthdays have been celebrated with fruit. But there are some fabulous bakers on the staff. Have a lovely day.

How rude!! I wouldn't bother next time. Surely it's the thought that counts not if it was shop bought or homemade.

Personally I dread birthdays at work and all the cake bringing in. I'm trying to lose weight and it's far too tempting Wink

Baking turns out far more expensive than a shop cake so its hardly cheap!

I was wondering if someone would come onto the thread to mention the home made cake avoidance in case you were the type of person to mix the cake in the toilet bowl and use the cat as a spatula.

They are all clearly bonkers and not worthy of your time and effort.

We do birthday cakes in our office bought, made, chocolates or pastry products, pork pies or sausage rolls. No-one really cares although oddly the pastry products seem to get everyone silly excited. Probably because it's a change to sweet stuff.

Gosh, how rude.

YANBU, homemade cake is always nicer than supermarket mass produced and you took time to do it too.

we have birthday cake in one of my classes and its lovely to have homemade cakes. A few of us don't bake and I feel very envious of those who can bake a good sponge.
Good for you going to the effort to make your own!

They're under no obligation to have any...
Can people seriously prefer a tesco cake? Nothing against them, but no contest next to a homemade one!

Happy birthday.

Your colleagues are rude but I know a few people who think they're very good at baking but their cakes are awful and dry. I also worked with someone that had shocking hygiene and no one would eat what she bought in.

Homemade cakes are much nicer and more substantial/filling than shop bought ones. They require time and effort to make. Anyone being critical should be ashamed of themselves or maybe they're just crap cooks and are jealous. Tell them so and take no further notice of them. When it's their birthday how about suggesting, "Shop bought, then?" with a little snigger.

I think people would turn their noses up at Tesco and would prefer M&S where I work but then if someone brings in homemade cake everyone forms an in-orderly queue!

To whoever up thread that suggested taking cake in was a gender thing - DH is a firefighter and they are all men. Cake has to be taken in on birthdays or whenever someone fucks up a training excercise.

YADNBU. Chocolate w cream and black cherries sounds amazing and def not cheap. I'd assume they were being sarcastic and envious as you've spent money AND time AND can bake. Happy birthday Cake

Another vote for home made, since it's a voting day.

I would only eat Tesco cake in an emergency.

That is seriously insane. Home-made cakes are always nicer unless you spend an absolute fortune.

I used to work with someone who just loved baking and was constantly bringing in the most fabulous cakes. Well, of course, it was rude not to try them. I miss those cakes but my waistline is much healthier these days.

Re: Pastry treats.

I had a colleague who used to bring in homemade samosas as an alternative to cake.

They were awesome and demolished in about 20 seconds.

She used to say how cheap they were to make, but they were so good!

A home made cake sounds wonderful! So much nicer and more worth the calories than processed Tesco Cake.

What type of cakes did you make? I'd love to know

Happy 32nd birthday.
