Birthday cake at the office

Blablabla1984 · 23/06/2016 15:50

We do a collection for everyone’s birthday in the office and get them a present and a card and the birthday boy/girl brings in some cakes and sweets. Great, right?
Well today it’s my birthday, I baked two cakes last night and brought them in.

A few people made a comment that bringing a homemade cake is being cheap. All others so far have brought in Tesco cakes….

Seriously?? What world do we live in? I do enjoy baking and I thought people would appreciate a homemade cake… AIBU?

They actually said that to your face??

After they'd taken a piece, by any chance?

PolitelyDisagree · 23/06/2016 17:19

Is this a stealth boast? Wink

Are you sure they weren't joking as it seems a real peculiar comment for a few people to make? I could believe it if it was just one oddball but for several people to say is strange.

Gizlotsmum · 23/06/2016 17:19

Home made cake is better than shop brought... Tastier and more thought has gone into it... It was always more of a treat to have homemade cake in the office...

SuperFlyHigh · 23/06/2016 17:27

YANBU!

How rude for them to say that.

we love a home baked cake in our office (as well as shop bought!) and never ever complain.

Pearlylum, I work in a near all male environment and there is masses of cake. Colleagues bring back chocolates and biscuits from holidays and visits. The place is constantly full of temptation. We all love homemade cake and are appreciative of anyone who puts in the effort and makes one.

vikingorigins · 23/06/2016 17:31

Home baked cake in our office disappears in seconds.

Can't believe the people you work with.

notamummy10 · 23/06/2016 17:36

Homemade cakes are so much nicer than most shop bought ones, plus it shows you've gone to the effort rather than picking a random cake off the shelf.

Happy birthday, hope you have a wonderful evening! 🎈🎉🎁🍰🍾

GrumpyOldBag · 23/06/2016 17:37

Daft.

I would much rather eat home made cake.

Happy Birthday!

Ememem84 · 23/06/2016 17:40

Happy birthday!!

I'd much prefer a homemade cake. Thoughts and love have gone into it. Not just tesco.

CodewordRochambeau · 23/06/2016 17:43

MN is the only place in the world where I've heard somebody say that they never eat home-made baked goods.

I thought it was desperately sad.

banivani · 23/06/2016 17:43

In Sweden a shop bought cake, unless very good proper bakery cake, is a bit tacky.

PUGaLUGS · 23/06/2016 17:45

I love homemade cake! They are being absolute twats idiots OP.

Happy Birthday!

Mazzystarlett · 23/06/2016 18:00

anotherday You mean you're not supposed to use the cat as a spatula??? So that's where I've been going wrong!
OP I suspect jealousy in the ranks, I bet they couldn't rustle up a sponge cake between them Wink

Mimicat44 · 23/06/2016 18:46

Homemade cake = more expensive and tastes much nicer (unless you're rubbish at making cakes) so they are BU and rude.

FoxyLoxy123 · 23/06/2016 20:14

YANBU! I think your work lot are WEIRD. Everyone brings in shop bought at my work but I like baking so always took my own. They all used to see how much nicer it was and how it was a lovely gesture. A few others started doing their own baking instead of buying after too.

Happy Birthday :)

FrancesNiadova · 23/06/2016 20:19

Happy Birthday! CakeWineFlowers
(There is a place for cake-bakers like us....The Clandestine Cake Club! Sssshhhhhh! Wink)

Perfectlypurple · 23/06/2016 20:23

Yanbu. I make cakes. I would be embarrassed to take a shop bought cake anywhere!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/06/2016 21:02

MN is the only place in the world where I've heard somebody say that they never eat home-made baked goods

I think I read it on here once that someone would never take books out of the library or buy them second hand because you didn't know where they'd been Grin

NarkyKnockers · 23/06/2016 21:38

I hope you didn't let them have any op. Do you think it may have been an unsuccessful attempt at office banter? Yabu anyway because you didnt make any for me when black forest and lemon drizzle are my 2 favourite cakes Grin
