Birthday cake at the office

We do a collection for everyone’s birthday in the office and get them a present and a card and the birthday boy/girl brings in some cakes and sweets. Great, right?
Well today it’s my birthday, I baked two cakes last night and brought them in.

A few people made a comment that bringing a homemade cake is being cheap. All others so far have brought in Tesco cakes….

Seriously?? What world do we live in? I do enjoy baking and I thought people would appreciate a homemade cake… AIBU?

YANBU! Wish I worked with you, they sound delicious! I always take in homemade cake and nibbles, and they are so greatly received (especially during the months that I practised my wedding cake!). Shame your colleagues weren't so appreciative.

Happy Birthday OP, where is your office please?

Only a fool with no tastebuds would prefer shop bought cake over home made. I wouldn't care what they think or say because they are an idiot.

I'm a home baker and my birthday cakes are legendary. My colleagues love them much more than the usual offering of crappy supermarket ones.

I have never understood the whole cake/ office thing.

I have only ever worked in mostly male environments, no one ever brought in cakes.

is it a gender thing?

Your colleagues are being rude and are so wrong! Homemade cakes cost a lot more to make than buying a Tesco cake and that isn't taking your time and effort into account.

That said I have also tasted some terrible home baking but in my experience, those who bring homemade cakes into work, do so because they are very good bakers!

"My colleague is always bothering us with things she baked at home" said NO-ONE EVER (except some people in your office)
What is wrong with them?
I'm coming over for a slice. Of the chocolate one. and then the lemon one.

They're arses. It's more expensive to make your own. And takes time. Nothing wrong with shop bought but most people I think would enjoy a home made cake. Don't bother next year.

pearlylum We do it because the office does a collection and gets a present and a card for the birthday person. So in my eyes the cake is a little thank you for the present.

My husband took things in to the office on Wednesday. He had baked bite-sized sausage rolls using cut-up hot dog sausages (they're nice). He brought the tin out from the break room with a flourish ... and it was empty, some bugger had already eaten the lot. Shock

I think there's a definite gender divide with cakes/puddings/desserts Pearly. My work runs training courses that are mainly attended by men.

They hardly touch the dessert course on the lunchtime buffet, which is fine because it means that we get to eat all the leftovers.

Any time there are more women on the course, due to a slightly different occupational group, there is always a lot less cake leftover.

Our office is about 50/50 male/female and there are several female home bakers, one or two men that bake, although I think one of them usually gets his teen daughters to do the baking for him help but most people buy supermarket stuff which I try not to bother with because is rarely worth the calories.

On ds's birthday he took in a fuddle for the team he leads so crisps, sausage rolls, flapjacks, cookies, dips etc (all from Tesco) and he got me to make a cake for the managers' office where his desk is.
His team felt hard done by when they saw the managers were sharing a home made cake so definitely a warped sense of quality in your office OP.

YANBU, I would have been hard pressed to choose between those two. Theres nothing cheap about home baking.
I reckon they just cant bake a cake.

They are muppets, it's not 'cheap' at all. I can't bake so i buy shop cakes, a friends mum bakes for her and homemade is always best :-)
They must have no taste :-)

Blablabla1984 Iv;e never worked in a place that does a collection for a card and a gift on someone;s birthday. Again possibly a gender thing.

You work with some extremely rude people. As there were "a few" of them, I assume that means at least three? I hope they were at least gracious enough not to help themselves to cake that they had disparaged!

Now I am craving homemade cake. . . (Insert Homer Simpson-esque "Mmm"). Cake

Oldlaund just go to my baking ex colleagues house. That'll cure you. It was awful, you'd honestly never have guessed seeing and speaking to her. That's why I'll never touch one unless I've seen the persons kitchen. No matter how bloody gorgeous they look and most probably are. It was about 15 years ago and still bothers me now (barf).

I'd much prefer homemade cake! Mass produced tastes vile.
