I taught a Eunique - do I win?

NotYoda · 15/06/2016 06:21

Rebekah Wade spoiled Rebekah, but it's my preferred spelling

YANBU about other names

Leearna
R'Marni

Waffles80 · 15/06/2016 06:26

I think the Rebekah thing has been dealt with, thankfully.

But the casual bandying around of the word chav has barely been challenged. It's offensive classist snobbery - it's not 1816. We don't need to keep doing down the working classes in case they get ideas above their stations, you know.

moodycat · 15/06/2016 06:33

Jazmyn Hmm

Kr1stina · 15/06/2016 06:33

One of my children has a friend called Dylon ( like the fabric dye ) rather than Dylan ( yes I checked with the school )

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 15/06/2016 06:36

Agree about chav - let's not yeah?
I do hate unnecessary alternative spellings though. My most annoying one recently is Maison (Mason) it's fucking French for house

I know a Locklin. Also an Izabel. Both parents said they didn't know how they were spelt so just spelt them how they are pronounced Hmm

CaveMum · 15/06/2016 06:43

This is a great website on dodgy baby names Grin

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 15/06/2016 06:43

Oh yes and a FOAF on Facebook has Arauxbella- just why?

Damegemma82 · 15/06/2016 06:44

Okay, this is the worst. We had a patient who's name was spelled Le-ah. My colleague called her from the waiting room as Leah only to be corrected by mother..."its Ledashah"
Another one was a patient who's name was spelled Dene so I went to the waiting room and called "Denny" for the mum to shoot me the worst daggers and hiss "it's Dean". Me as a gullible 18 year old hadn't yet come across the stupidity of taking a "normal" name and spelling it in a ridiculous manner in an effort to prove they are intelligent or creative in some way. Completely agree it just comes across as a bit tragic in a chavvy way.

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 15/06/2016 06:45

No no no ledasha doesn't exist, it's an urban myth

I'm afraid to confirm ladystark it absolutely does. Confused

Felyne · 15/06/2016 06:49

On another forum many years ago someone was debating calling their soon-to-be born daughter Kynydy (pronounced Kennedy).

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 15/06/2016 06:49

Nope - it doesn't. It's a lazy and racist urban legend.
Admittedly, the spread of the story of ledasha may have spawned a few ledashas but the story as you have described it is word for word an urban myth which has been debunked quite thoroughly

Fififofum · 15/06/2016 06:50

Love the name Esme as well. I just think either give them a unique name like Rainbow or something or a 'normal' one and spell it right. Why the need for names to be different? It's like a competition. When I had dd people said 'oh that's so popular now', I ignored them. I spelt it correctly and yes we've come across a couple with the same name but who cares? She's the only one in her class, although dd was disappointed when she started school as there were other girls with the same name 'we could be best friends mummy if we had the same name' kids. Grin

Makeupbabes · 15/06/2016 06:52

Oh God yes!

Jaime ? As in Jamie Hmm

CantChoose · 15/06/2016 06:52

ladystark it does! And damegemma I think I might know you....

My encounter with Le-ah was about 3 years ago so I guess the mum could have chosen the name from the urban legend, if that's how it started!

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 15/06/2016 06:53

Jaime is a Spanish version of James. It's also in game of thrones

I recently read about a KVIIIlyn (Caitlin with Roman numerals in the middle for the 'ait' sound). Is that an urban myth too? Genuine question
