To wish people wouldn't chat in coffee shops

Sitting in Costa with a latte choc muffin and my iPad. Can't concentrate because I'm surrounded by people yattering on about the Queen's birthday celebrations, their ailments in too much detail, conducting interviews for dodgy sounding jobs and making loud phone calls.

AIBU to wish they'd STFU and let me enjoy my coffee in peace?

Notamummy no need to crosscut the "snob", I am a full confesseday coffee snob. Starbucks get credit for making the legal drug culture coffee culture popular here, but when you get used to certain standards they just don't cut it!

CattyI can only guess that as Costa is a franchise there must be some good ones, But they weren'the amongst the handful I dared to try.

booksandcoffee · 14/06/2016 20:54

OP, fair enough, I guess it is just a matter of taste. As for noise levels, could you try listening to music with headphones to drown them out?

a1poshpaws · 14/06/2016 20:59

I had to come over to check out this thread to see if it was a spoof or what! "AIBU to wish people wouldn't chat in coffee shops?" ROTFLMAO !!

What the feck do you think people normally go to coffee shops for, if not to socialise?

Well, at least you gave me a good laugh on what's been a very sad day for me.

SybilEngineer · 14/06/2016 21:13

Sorry you've had a sad day, a1posh. However, as you have seen - this thread isn't a spoof - it's more of a plea from the heart.

YABU. Wear earphones, or sit in the library.

Apologies if this has been suggested, but earphones?

Maireadplastic · 14/06/2016 22:40

Really SybilEngineer, your response to someone who says they've had a very sad day is to claim a tedious coffee shop moan is a 'plea from the heart'? Some perspective, please.

Lilacpink40 · 14/06/2016 22:45

Victor Meldrew is your Dad? Grin

PalaceResident · 14/06/2016 22:47

This thread gave me a good laugh!!

UptownFunk00 · 14/06/2016 22:58

I want to know about uncle Jeffs procedure! Smile

Lilacpink40 · 14/06/2016 23:02

I want to see Victor Meldrew's DD get up and throw Jeffs procedure's groupies out of a cafe.

Please tell me where and when so I can watch and then talk very loudly down my phone about my cheese scone

Cineraria · 14/06/2016 23:27

Next time you want to go to Costa and not hear people talking let me know and I'll bring DS there. He is eight months old and has just worked out how to growl. It's his favourite noise at the moment and Costa seems to be his favourite place to practise it. I promise you won't hear anyone talking. He has amazing stamina too.

bedonald · 14/06/2016 23:52

It's the English language. I notice that in cafés with anglophones - you can hear them boring on above everyone else. And Costa coffee is dire 😝

GarlicSteak · 15/06/2016 00:25

Am I the only person who muscles in on nearby conversations? I mean, they're so loud they might as well be talking to me.

Perhaps I am the only one Confused In the whole of the UK Shock And everyone's avoiding me at cafés Sad

Thisisfourty · 15/06/2016 07:11

Worral I just choked on my coffee reading your comment 😂😂😂😂

imacmum · 15/06/2016 11:58

That's why there's never any room for me to sit and chat with my coffee, because people with iPads are having meetings in there, lol

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 15/06/2016 13:41

Many of us go to coffee shops to meet and chat so it is a bit unreasonable to expect peace and quiet - even libraries aren't particularly quiet anymore. BUT I was once in a naice award-winning tearoom with hubby and it was so quiet that it was uncomfortable. You felt you shouldn't let your teaspoon clatter in case you got a dirty look from others. It was oppressively quiet and unenjoyable. You need a bit of background noise but not too much.

Maireadplastic · 15/06/2016 15:26

I was once told off for being too noisy with my boys in.....drum roll...a park!

derxa · 15/06/2016 15:34
