to give a guest the nicer room

Hi,

Sorry for any irrelevant information but don't want to drip feed.

DH travels a broad frequently for work. When he went to south Africa last year his colleague hosted him for 3 additional nights meaning that dh could stay and do some touristy type things which he really enjoyed.

Colleague is due to come to the UK for a training course and dh has asked if we can extend the same hospitality to her. I'm more than happy to do so as she is a lovely lady.

The only problem is our house. We moved in 3 years ago and it's very much a work in progress. Liveable but not all 'done'. While we have spare rooms, we don't have a guest room set up as such. So I said to dh that colleague should have our room as this will hopefully have been finished, with a refurbished end suite and we will have spare room with mattress or sofa bed and slightly manky but useable shower room. Dh thinks this is Ott and colleague would be fine on the sofa bed if we present the room nicely (although cannot decorate that room before the stay).

Yes, it is OTT. The spare room, nicely presented will be fine.

I'd give them our room but DH would agree with your DH. Sorry that's no help!

Spare room, nicely presented and as finished as you can get it without going to too much trouble would be fine! I'm sure she'll just be grateful for your hospitality .

As a guest I would feel awkward and embarassed if the hosts gave up their bedroom.

Just set up a guestroom. It doesn't need to be 'done' just clean and comfortable. Does it have a bed/sofabed? Curtains? Spare blankets? Lamp? Make sure there are fresh towels and nice toiletries, maybe some flowers on windowsill etc.

Am sure she wouldn't expect you to give up your room and unless you're going to take out everything that you need, you will only be making awkward by having to keep popping in there to fetch clothes, personal items etc. A clean, tidy spare room will be fine.

God, YABU - giving up your room is unnecessary! Give them the spare.

You're already doing them a favor by providing them a place to sleep and saving them money on a hotel room. No need to bend over backwards for them.

I just give my guests a couch. It has the bonus of making them not want to stay for more than a few days.

I think the spare room is fine. It's nice to return the favour, but you don't want her to feel awkward. Tell her in advance the set up (sofa bed as you are renovating) and she will be prepared.

We always give guests our bedroom, and explain to them why this makes us (as well as them) more comfortable. We get up really early, so like to have guests stay in our room, which is a bit more separate from the rest of the house, so we don't disturb them or feel like we have to tiptoe around.

We do this quite often as we have a lot of house guests, and it works well for our family. Our guests don't mind, as long as we explain well.

Leaving some good quality towels out and a tidy room would be fine!
