To think England is too crowded

toadworthy · 06/06/2016 14:41

In my town on the South coast it really is chaos and getting worse all the time. Roads are a nightmare. There are never enough school places despite doubling the entry in all primaries. Soaring rents. Building sites all over.

AIBU to mind?
What's it like where you are?

The SE is overcrowded due to poor planning by authorities that are happy for the rest of the country to decay while London booms

^^This is what is wrong with the UK. We continue to cram the majority of the investment, jobs and opportunities in one tiny overcrowded corner of the country while perpetuating the myth that 'it's grim up north' and there's nothing worthwhile outside London.

BreakingDad77 · 06/06/2016 15:18

As mentioned above the SE is overcrowded and certain towns and cities due to poor planning by authorities, and continued obsession with London.

But in 2066 when they complete the Northern powerhouse things will be fine Wink

Itriedtodohandstandsforyou · 06/06/2016 15:20

toadworthy..? You've confused me with last bit of your last post..

RestlessTraveller · 06/06/2016 15:21

So it is about immigration.

GarlicSteak · 06/06/2016 15:21

It's practically deserted where I live. All fields round 'ere.

Only 3% of the UK is built on.

We are not running out of space.

We are, however, suffering from an extremely short-sighted economic strategy and the inevitable effects of "hands-off" regional planning.

Patterkiller · 06/06/2016 15:22

Rural North East here. No overcrowding here. Barely saw a soul on a two hour walk this morning through woodland.

I think you're being quite narrow minded to assume the UK is overcrowded based on where you live.

Just5minswithDacre · 06/06/2016 15:23

We could billet people to spread them out more if you're squeamish about euthanasia or forced birth control. What do you reckon?

t4gnut · 06/06/2016 15:23

The UK uses around 7% of its land for residential use. we are not the highest density population in Europe - think that's Belgium. we are on a par with Germany.

Those claiming we're a tiny full up island are dimwits of the highest order.

Now what we do have are chronically underfunded services courtesy of our awful government - so if you voted tory last time yes it is your fault.

mirtle · 06/06/2016 15:24

We moved from somewhere very busy to somewhere much quieter (SW London to SE market town). It's not busy really. School places found ok. NHS dentist which seems to accept everybody. They are building some new houses and seem to be extending a school to accommodate them. Currently looking at secondary schools. We have two good ones who anticipate us getting a place, even though we're out of catchment for one. On the whole it's not overcrowded and I think in certain sectors (e.g. care) they struggle to find workers here.

GarlicSteak · 06/06/2016 15:24

Do you know where the main England-Europe border is, toadworthy?

Hint: they speak French there.

How do you think France will feel about running our border for us, once we've told Europe to fuck off?

GarlicSteak · 06/06/2016 15:25

Those claiming we're a tiny full up island are dimwits of the highest order.

Yup.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 06/06/2016 15:26

If you are taking about land being over crowded then in most places no

If you are talking about do we have enough homes, places in schools, hospitals equipped enough, enough trained medical staff police and fire services to deal with all emergencies then we are struggling really struggling in some places more than others

Just5minswithDacre · 06/06/2016 15:27

I hope we do leave the EU, but I don't think it will stop immigration and I don't want it to. It might rebalance European and non-European migration and hopefully it would improve security at the borders but that's all.

We're going to have to learn to handle an exploding population, as is much of the world. It has implications for infrastructure, employment patterns and are use of natural resources. We're way behind the curve.

Just5minswithDacre · 06/06/2016 15:29

Our use of^

Toomanymarsbars · 06/06/2016 15:31

Try living in Tokyo, then you'll understand what "overcrowded" really means.

toadworthy · 06/06/2016 15:31

Ok. I will stop complaining. Off to Rightmove to look at prices in rural Norfolk!

OP posts:
dizzyfucker · 06/06/2016 15:31

I agree, I used to live in central London. Awful.
I emigrated to rural Brazil. We have more cows than people now.

We're going on holiday to London soon. My 3 year old left when he was a baby. He's going to be like Crocodile Dundee in New York. Grin

ilovesooty · 06/06/2016 15:33

Of course it's about immigration. The OP might just as well have said so in the first place.

dividedmansions · 06/06/2016 15:35

Yawn. Hmm

Aeroflotgirl · 06/06/2016 15:35

Yes it is very crowded, we are a tiny island.

Salene · 06/06/2016 15:35

I'm sat in my garden sun bathing looking out thinking , nope not overcrowded here.

Move to NE Scotland and you won't be fighting for space

I do believe a lot of the SE of Engiand is bursting at the seams though.

To think England is too crowded
WriteforFun1 · 06/06/2016 15:35

Toomany, becoming Tokyo is something to avoid surely?

Those in not crowded places, you'll be dealing with SE escapees quite soon.

World population is very high, it's not just the UK.

toadworthy · 06/06/2016 15:36

When I see green fields and playing fields built on it makes me sad though, because they will never come back. Don't the rest of you mind? Is it sentimental?

OP posts:
HermioneJeanGranger · 06/06/2016 15:36

There are plenty of resources, just not in the places everyone wants to live.

There's no shortage of hospitals, GP practises, dental surgeries, school places and jobs up here. But where I used to live, it was the opposite.

SapphireStrange · 06/06/2016 15:37

dizzy, wow! That's quite a move. May I ask (and sorry to derail) why you decided to do that and what life is like in rural Brazil?

I am just nosy interested for its own sake, but am also vaguely thinking of a trip to Brazil so am interested in that regard too.
