To not want Office to tell me I need to shave my legs?

AliceInWonderland3 · 05/06/2016 21:41

I got an email this week from Office trying to sell me summer shoes, the email also told me not to forget to shave my legs.

AIBU to not want a business who wants female customers telling them they need to shave their legs? I shave my legs because I know people I encounter day-to-day will be horrified by body hair on a woman, but I don't need a business trying to make me feel bad if I choose to go outside without doing so. Or trying to make me feel disgusted by something natural Angry

SnowBallsAreHere ahaha

witsender · 05/06/2016 22:08

Yanbu. That's shoddy.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 05/06/2016 22:08

Just unsubscribe. Don't buy from there. You're over thinking it. Chill.

And this beauty... I'd work on that, personally. It sounds like an unhappy way to live

I totally get your point OP.

That 'target market' is the next generation of women growing up to think they have to conform to an ideal of 'beauty' or what constitutes an 'acceptable' appearance. It's a heartbeat away from 'bikini body ready?'

Thank God some people have the sense to notice it and question it.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 05/06/2016 22:09

I need to book in a wax before someone offers to plait them for me 😁 I don't have many and I fool myself that you can't really see them, but the ones I have are long. Ooops.

MyCatWasRightAboutYou · 05/06/2016 22:11

YANBU. I know it's supposed to be lighthearted, but in reality is is quite sexist/body-shaming.
A lot of women shave because they feel obligated to. Comments like that just reinforce it.

Redglitter · 05/06/2016 22:11

I honestly couldn't bring myself to get in the least worked up about a mass market email. Certainly wouldn't put me off buying their product

MadameDePomPom · 05/06/2016 22:12

My legs haven't been shaved since Crimbo and I'll still buy from Office. They do the best flats.

BigPurpleCake · 05/06/2016 22:15

It's a horrible email for them to send. Hope someone shows them this thread.

BertrandRussell · 05/06/2016 22:15

"I honestly couldn't bring myself to get in the least worked up about a mass market email. Certainly wouldn't put me off buying their product"

Yep. You're sadly not alone. That's why this sort of crap just goes on and on and on.....

Buttock · 05/06/2016 22:16

Yabu. It's not like they told you to shave your pubes and pits.

BertrandRussell · 05/06/2016 22:18

"It's a horrible email for them to send. Hope someone shows them this thread."

I don't. We're massively outnumbered by The Underthinkers!

HopefulHamster · 05/06/2016 22:19

YANBU.

There's just no need for them to say it. So patronising. Everyday sexism. Blah.

AuntDotsie · 05/06/2016 22:21

YANBU - it's unthinking sexism.

RupertPupkin · 05/06/2016 22:23

Yanbu. Fuck off, Office.

Hassled · 05/06/2016 22:23

I thought you meant Microsoft Office. I was so confused.

Peyia · 05/06/2016 22:23

told you to shave your pubes and pits.

How is that different?

AliceInWonderland3 · 05/06/2016 22:23

Thanks @twatbadgingcuntfuckery (brilliant name) that's a really helpful post. I've tweeted office and everyday sexism but I'll give vadgenda a tweet if Office just ignore my complaint.

Also pleased to see so many people get that it's worrying that a large company are emailing thousands of young women telling them they need to shave to be acceptable! Men don't get that crap, if men were body shamed as much as women I wouldn't take such an issue to it. Or something revolutionary, not hate on each other.

OP posts:
MyCatWasRightAboutYou · 05/06/2016 22:27

Would they send out an email circular with men's sandals and say "men, don't forget to pluck your toe hair before you wear them"? Grin
No, they wouldn't. So that's why it's shitty and sexist. Especially since it's telling women to do something many already feel pressured into doing.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 05/06/2016 22:28

Yanbu. Office can fuck the fuck off.

Can you share the email with the Everyday Sexism website?

SeparatedByMotorways · 05/06/2016 22:31

It's a shitty message and it doesn't relate to their products. If people merrily accept 'shave your legs' goes hand in hand with 'what lovely weather' that's a bit disappointing. YANBU

bibbitybobbityyhat · 05/06/2016 22:32

" They probably sent out thousands of the same emails"

and that makes it ok how exactly?

MouldyPeach · 05/06/2016 22:33

YANBU
Ugh I hate the trend of faux friendly marketing emails, they think they can be offensive because it's said in a jokey, matey way. No copy writer and spambot we are not friends, fuck off.

Just5minswithDacre · 05/06/2016 22:33

How disappointing.

I'll cheerfully boycott them for that. Grown up, non-patronising, non-patriarchal marketing really isn't difficult.

houseeveryweekend · 05/06/2016 22:35

I like Office but yes agree that is a shit way to advertise. But its money making isnt it. All advertising has to make us feel like theres something we could be buying to help us look better.. like razors! Reminds me of this

ClarkeyCat · 05/06/2016 22:35

Underthinkers

I like that!
