To not want Office to tell me I need to shave my legs?

AliceInWonderland3 · 05/06/2016 21:41

I got an email this week from Office trying to sell me summer shoes, the email also told me not to forget to shave my legs.

AIBU to not want a business who wants female customers telling them they need to shave their legs? I shave my legs because I know people I encounter day-to-day will be horrified by body hair on a woman, but I don't need a business trying to make me feel bad if I choose to go outside without doing so. Or trying to make me feel disgusted by something natural Angry

It's disgusting and I'm fucked off with it all.

What right have they got to tell women to not forget to shave their legs?

This thread is also depressing.

Helmetbymidnight · 07/06/2016 16:28

I don't see disagreeing with people as being 'strident'.

I can't understand where you are getting that from.

Ho hum- I suppose that's dreadfully 'strident' of me to say so.

MrsGideon · 07/06/2016 16:31

I'm not ridiculing anyone and neither is The OP (except Office's marketing strategy)! If you read my previous post, I said I want people to be able to have a choice in what they do.

It's more the sense that if we speak up about something that bothers us, people shout us down. As has happened throughout history. This generally doesn't happen to men.

MrJones1977 · 07/06/2016 16:44

Consider men as pack animals, if one goes against the grain then they can be ridiculed to the point where they accept the way things are. I was one of those ridiculed when I was younger, which is why I now tend to steer my own ship and reject a lot of society

MrsGideon · 07/06/2016 16:53

But the thing is, women are ridiculed every single day just for having any views and opinions in the first place. But instead of rejecting society, feminists are trying to change things for the better. This includes picking up on every single piece of everyday sexism, such as the one described in the OP.

BertrandRussell · 07/06/2016 17:21

Itsmine- on this thread who has received the most insults and mockery?

AugustaFinkNottle · 07/06/2016 17:25

The reality is, it is different for men, as the majority don't shave their legs. They aren't going to start advertising make-up for men either, as the majority doesn't wear it. Do you think they should advertise make-up for men too?

You're still missing the point, BlueDove. No-one is objecting to razor sellors advertising razors for women. What they're objecting to is shoe manufacturers telling women they shouldn't show their legs unless they've shaved them first. Can you not see the difference?

MrsGideon · 07/06/2016 17:42

And anyway, the reason most women shave their legs is down to advertising in the first place!

MrsGideon · 07/06/2016 17:42

Sorry that was in response to Augusta and bluedove

HolesInTheFloor · 07/06/2016 17:44

Yanbu at all op. It's fucking depressing.

Helmetbymidnight · 07/06/2016 17:51

Where have people been attacked?

BertrandRussell · 07/06/2016 17:54

"Where have people been attacked?"

Well, the OP certainly was................but I don't think that counts.

Helmetbymidnight · 07/06/2016 18:02

Maybe it was the 'yawn'? It was a very 'strident' yawn.

Ah. So all the unpleasant things said to the OP count for nothing, do they?

EveryoneElsie · 07/06/2016 18:07

You're overthinking this.

Sweet Jesus on a rollercoaster. It's nothing personal
. They probably sent out thousands of the same emails. Chill.

  • It's hit a nerve with you because it's reminding you to do something that you don't want to do and only do for other people. I'd work on that, personally. It sounds like an unhappy way to live.*

I detect some bias here. Grin

(It's a joke!)

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 07/06/2016 18:18

I shave my legs every day. I still think it's a repellent email that points to some wider problems - and refusal to see this as anything but an acknowledgement that many women do shave their legs is really depressing.

MsHoolie · 07/06/2016 18:25

Ladies, let's all grow our leg hair and go try on sandals in Office then pist pictures of our hairy legs in their new season sandals on their FB / Twitter page!
Cheeky buggers.

(Just noticed mine need lawnmowing!! Beenin leggingsfor too long!)

AliceInWonderland3 · 07/06/2016 18:49

I think its been quite a civilised discussion apart from the first page, we don't need to attack each other. Some people want to shave their legs, some people don't. We should live in a world without women being constantly told they're disgusting when they don't so they can be free to make that choice. This is why Office's email is so alarming, businesses that want female customers should at least pretend not to be sexist!

However I don't know how long civilised discussion will last here as the Daily Mail have gotten their paws onto this. A reporter emailed me asking about this thread and I replied giving her details about the email.

The reason I made this thread is because I want people to know that Office use unnecessary body shaming to try and sell their shoes (I personally don't believe body shaming is ever necessary). So even though the Daily Mail usually contribute to the problem, it'll help spread the word. Who knows, maybe more companies will get with the times and stop being sexist? (I know I'm naive, I call it being positive)

"Just noticed mine need lawnmowing!" - why though? Mine are not shaved and I like them. It's my fur. It's lovely.

Zaurak · 07/06/2016 19:05

The dm aren't allowed to contact you I think, according to MN rules?

falange · 07/06/2016 20:11

It doesn't matter. If anyone who reads it thinks oh, I must shave me legs that's ok, and if someone else thinks eff off, don't tell me to shave my legs, that's the end of it. It really doesn't matter.

AugustaFinkNottle · 07/06/2016 21:04

Alice, you do know the Mail will portray you as some dreadful hairy-legged feminazi fully signed-up member of the "PC Brigade" looking for spurious reasons to be offended, don't you? And their insane bigoted commenters will all have a lovely time telling you to Know Your Place.
