Another buggy in wheelchair space thread

MsAR · 04/06/2016 21:09

I got on the bus at the same time as a wheelchair user was queuing to do so. The driver told the wheelchair user there wasn't room, so I quickly checked and saw it was a buggy and a shopping trolley in the space.

The driver told the wheelchair user there would be another bus in a few minutes and they didn't seem to mind and weren't particularly insistent about getting on.

Was I being unreasonable to step in at this point and tell the driver that the person with the buggy should get off as wheelchairs have priority? He was pretty annoyed when I did, and kept repeating that there wasn't space.

I'm in London, and there are clear signs on every bus stating this is the case. I've often had to get off a bus when a wheelchair needed to get on and would never question if asked to do so.

Would it also be unreasonable for me to complain to TFL? I know I'm being a busy body but the driver's attitude really irritated me! I'd like the mumsnet jury to help me decide what to do, if anything.

maybe parent groups need to lobby for their own spaces

There's slings, easy fold double buggies, you could have one in sling and one in buggy, carrycot style - when newborn you can fit both in one carrycot.

ghostspirit · 05/06/2016 00:49

original who said i have taken it on the bus? i have not yet as i use a smaller buggy and a sling. but when my baby gets to heavy for the sling i might need to use that pram on the bus. so then my answer will be because i have 2 babys. and thats just how its made. i did not get a side by side as i need to get into door ways. and as someone up thread alot of buggys for 2 babys dont fold.

PurpleRainDiamondsandPearls · 05/06/2016 00:49

Nah too much effort mummyme. I've been on MN for years, these threads come up repeatedly and not once have I seen these people do anything, unlike disability campaigners who worked tirelessly for years.

Mummyme1987 · 05/06/2016 00:49

I seem to remember my
Mum (I have a very close in age sibling) so almost twins saying something about a sling and a single pushchair too. Had to bump it up stairs to get on too I think she said.

She also used to say my sibling was so smiley all the time that she often made s profit on buses from old ladies giving her 10p for the babies. Grin

Mummyme1987 · 05/06/2016 00:53

You have the choice of going with a partner or friend. Not ideal but possible. Do you get the point that wheelchair users have no choices of doing anything to not use the space?

PurpleRainDiamondsandPearls · 05/06/2016 00:53

I wonder how some of you even make it to the bus stop the amount of hand wringing you do. Get a buggy suitable for the mode of transport you use. I wouldn't get a buggy that doesn't fit in my car and then complain to Ford that their boots are too small. Grin

Baconyum · 05/06/2016 00:54

Not being ridiculous at all! Not all twins are born by section for starters. Plus that wasn't the only option I suggested.

I used to have one in a sling and one in a maclaren techno xt. I mainly walked everywhere, but when I was choosing a pushchair, I went for the maclaren because it was lightweight and folded easily because I knew I would sometimes be getting busses.

im not sure its that easy with buggys now that they are mainly built like tanks. i could buy a side by side. that could unbrella fold. better to fold on bus if needed. but then i cant get in shops ...anyway why did buggys get so big. never used to be

I loved my Phil and teds for my two. So much better than any other twin buggy of the time. Do they still make those? So small but fab and easy to fold one handed.

PurpleRainDiamondsandPearls · 05/06/2016 01:02

If you'd admit you choose not to because it's very difficult, I might have some respect. I appreciate it is very challenging if you have small babies. I have lots of sympathy and would help to the best of my ability which includes holding a baby or two. I'd not want to see anyone get off the bus when there's a perfect solution; we all get on the bus. If you have a non-folding tank, then cut your losses and expect to get off the bus but you only have yourself to blame.

Primaryteach87 · 05/06/2016 01:02

Hmmm I think you were creating a problem where there wasn't one, as the disabled person was willing to wait.

I'm a mum, pregnant and have permenant medical condition that means I can't stand (but not evident just from looking at me).

I personally would have been more than a little peeved if you'd demanded I get off. I would have offered if the other disabled person had been upset or the wait was long, but the greatest good for greatest number here was to just wait a few minutes for the next bus.

Luckily, where I am it's very rare for there to be any kind of clash for the disabled space.

Mummyme1987 · 05/06/2016 01:02

Will state that said kids are taller than me know so not recent! Lol

ghostspirit · 05/06/2016 01:02

oh i live under a rock... i just know of the silvercross coach build prams then my mind skips to the unbrella folding

PurpleRainDiamondsandPearls · 05/06/2016 01:04

Primary Why would you not look to your fellow passengers for a seat? I doubt every single one of them would be disabled or otherwise in need of a seat. Win win.
