Another buggy in wheelchair space thread

I got on the bus at the same time as a wheelchair user was queuing to do so. The driver told the wheelchair user there wasn't room, so I quickly checked and saw it was a buggy and a shopping trolley in the space.

The driver told the wheelchair user there would be another bus in a few minutes and they didn't seem to mind and weren't particularly insistent about getting on.

Was I being unreasonable to step in at this point and tell the driver that the person with the buggy should get off as wheelchairs have priority? He was pretty annoyed when I did, and kept repeating that there wasn't space.

I'm in London, and there are clear signs on every bus stating this is the case. I've often had to get off a bus when a wheelchair needed to get on and would never question if asked to do so.

Would it also be unreasonable for me to complain to TFL? I know I'm being a busy body but the driver's attitude really irritated me! I'd like the mumsnet jury to help me decide what to do, if anything.

But it is a problem because he's blocking use of the disabled loo. All because some tit didn't think there needed to be a changing table in the men's.

So if having to pass urine with the door open is unacceptable, why is it acceptable for a disabled person to wet them selves?
Cos yes that can be the outcome if they can't access the disabled toilet due to all the omg aliens will abduct my baby brigade.
Ffs a baby is a only a baby for a short time, being disabled is often forever.
All the slefish dickheads who are so jealous, you know the answerr, get disabled.. Then you can use all the shiney disabled stuff

Sirzy · 07/06/2016 20:24

Having it as a shared space isn't reasonable when it means that people with disabilities are unable to access the toilets. Bearing in mind that a lot of disabilities come with urgency issues so anything that blocks up avilability isn't good.

For baby change all is need is a pull down table, most standard toilets can accommodate one somewhere. To have the only baby change in a disabled toilet is lazy planning,

Andrewofgg · 07/06/2016 20:37

It is indeed, but where that is what there is the parent who needs to change the baby has no option. As quickly as possibly please, but needs must.

Agoin what we did is adult size changing tables and hoists in every disabled toilet, that has to take priority over more baby change tables. Like I said there are changing tables available for you to use, sadly in most towns there are none available to teens and adults who need them, this leaves family's completely isolated as they carnt leave home. Their disability are life long, a baby requires a changing table for 2 years ish. My own dd needs these adult changing tables, on the other hand I changed my younger child with ease on my knee on any chair available to me, I carnt do this with my 18 year old who still wears nappies.

Headofthehive55 · 07/06/2016 20:40

I didn't say it was acceptable for you to wet yourself. As I said it's about the competing interests of all users. I think it is unacceptable because you should not have the door open due to infection control. I don't think it's reasonable to leave your baby outside either.

Lots and of people have incontinence issues, but wouldn't describe themselves as disabled - hence use the normal loo.

There should be the right number so that the mean waiting time is lowest for everyone.

Most places I go only have one loo, a shared space.

hazeyjane · 07/06/2016 20:44

Changing Places are campaigning for more fully accessible toilets. It is ridiculous that most disabled toilets, are where baby changing facilities are placed, when there is a real need for toilets with changing facilities for older children and adults.

Whilst we were on holiday last week, it was a joy, to go to change ds and discover the disabled toilet had a height adjustable, large fold down table which meant I didn't have to change him lying on the toilet floor. I never thought that a toilet would make me (and ds) so happy!

TheTartOfAsgard · 07/06/2016 20:50

I have bipolar and ASD. I use the disabled access toilets, and in supermarkets I can jump the queue at the disabled tills too, due to my additional needs. If a mum (or dad) needs to feed/change a baby and the only available safe space is the disabled toilets then they should be allowed to without being made to feel guilty. Queueing is a way of life.
Samcro of course it's not acceptable to pee with the door open in public toilets, don't be ridiculous. And would it be acceptable for the mum to wet themselves in public then cos she can't fit in the toilets safely? We're all human

When you're mobile - even if you have impairments - you have a choice. Someone on crutches could physically use a regular cubicle. Someone who uses a wheelchair and has no use of their legs has no choice. I wish people would realise how ignorant they are being Angry......and I say that as someone who can easily transfer out of a wheelchair so I do have a choice.

WomanActually · 07/06/2016 21:46

Many of us are campaigning at the moment because we have to change our older children, teenagers and adult children with disabilities on toilet floors because the majority of places don't provide adult changing tables or hoists in the disabled toilets.

Is theres anything I can do to help with the campaign, tweets, emails, petitions, donate to a specific charity, anything, please let me know, I might not be able to offer much but if I can, I will.

Yes purple we do have choices. For the sake of the other people in queues for the toilets, many of us choose to use the accessible toilets rather than shitting ourselves waiting. If you'd rather we didn't... well, you're the one who'll be regretting it afterwards.

Unless that shitting yourself is caused by a disability why is it more important you getting there first compared to someone who may have a disability which causes urge incontinence?

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 07/06/2016 22:15

That last post makes it sound like I just can't be arsed (heh) waiting Blush when I say "many of us" I'm referring to people with coeliac/IBS/IBD/similar conditions.

BishopBrennansArse · 07/06/2016 22:17

Then fair enough. If you were someone in rude health who just couldn't be arsed (heh!) turn it'd be completely different Wink

BishopBrennansArse · 07/06/2016 22:18

Aprils on the arsed (heh) parrot. Not sarcasm. Just similar thought process I suspect.

There's a thread in active about people without children parking in P and C spaces.
