AIBU in thinking this was really rude and upsetting

I live in a small village and I have two pugs, Poppy and Rosie. Rosie had an accident which resulted in her getting her eyeball perforated which meant I had to make the decision whether to have an extensive operation to rebuild her eye or a quick operation to remove her eye.
At the time the vet suggested that removing her eye would be better because she was so tiny (She weighed 2.5kg) They didn't expect her to survive and told me to expect the worst. She survived and is thriving!

Whenever I walk them its not unusual for people to ask to stroke them (Apparently pugs are an "in" thing right now)

During this mornings walk, Two middle aged ladies approached and started talking to me about my dogs. Then one of them noticed that Rosie was missing an eye. She then told me that I was cruel to let her live like that, I said She has no other health problems at all. That I would never be able to breed her, I said I have no intention of breeding her. That there was no point in me having her because she wasn't cute anymore, she looks disgusting and I should of had her pts. I said She is beautiful the way she is and walked off.

I'd have expected it from a child but a middle aged woman, She really upset me. Was I cruel to choose to remove her eye and not put her through reconstructive surgery?

Background: I have depression which got worse when I lost my staffy last year. My pugs have made me feel loads better, they aren't just pets, they are my companions.

Thanks for all you comments and pug pictures (awwww) I don't mean to drip feed but oh is armed forces and is currently out of area. So I'm on my own with 4 little ones and I didn't know if I was just being sensitive.

Hopefully I won't see her again, I'm going to totally ignore her if I do.

How rude! Think I'd have stated the fact that she was alive so what's her point!

MozzieRocks · 05/06/2016 12:17

Ignore, Ignore, Ignore. Some people are not nice people and your dogs looks lovely.

OohhItsNotHoxton · 05/06/2016 18:37

What a vile woman. Her comments say far more about her than you.
Your pug is beautiful.

frenchielala · 05/06/2016 18:40

Up hers - ignore her! They look lovely - sounds like you are doing a great job!

EnidButton · 05/06/2016 18:44

Utterly ridiculous! That woman was nasty never mind rude. Ignorant cow. I would've been very upset too. You absolutely did the right thing for Rosie, she has a full happy life right? That's the only thing that should be taken into consideration when it comes to an animal's wellbeing and health. Please don't give that idiot a moments more thought. Flowers

Deranged woman. The dog is gorgeous, pain free, happy and healthy. People can be so stupid and vain.

IamaBluebird · 05/06/2016 18:48

Your little dogs are so cute. I just showed their photo to my daughter who is now jumping round the room singing "ohhh I want them". Smile

She's an idiot. Next time you see her, look her up and down and say 'I wonder why they haven't put you down' and walk away. Silly bitch.

I bred a puppy that injured his eye and it had to be removed. He was adopted by someone who had a little boy who was blind in one eye (the same eye!) and he has an amazing life - beach every day, even played a part in the school play - and no one could ever suggest that he would have been better off being put down, rather than having his eye removed.
