AIBU in thinking this was really rude and upsetting

I live in a small village and I have two pugs, Poppy and Rosie. Rosie had an accident which resulted in her getting her eyeball perforated which meant I had to make the decision whether to have an extensive operation to rebuild her eye or a quick operation to remove her eye.
At the time the vet suggested that removing her eye would be better because she was so tiny (She weighed 2.5kg) They didn't expect her to survive and told me to expect the worst. She survived and is thriving!

Whenever I walk them its not unusual for people to ask to stroke them (Apparently pugs are an "in" thing right now)

During this mornings walk, Two middle aged ladies approached and started talking to me about my dogs. Then one of them noticed that Rosie was missing an eye. She then told me that I was cruel to let her live like that, I said She has no other health problems at all. That I would never be able to breed her, I said I have no intention of breeding her. That there was no point in me having her because she wasn't cute anymore, she looks disgusting and I should of had her pts. I said She is beautiful the way she is and walked off.

I'd have expected it from a child but a middle aged woman, She really upset me. Was I cruel to choose to remove her eye and not put her through reconstructive surgery?

Background: I have depression which got worse when I lost my staffy last year. My pugs have made me feel loads better, they aren't just pets, they are my companions.

Ignore her, stupid woman. Some people should keep their mouths shut judging by the rubbish that comes out of them. Of course you did the right thing, your dog is having a wonderful happy life with a brilliant owner.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 04/06/2016 19:33

She was a dickhead, Rosie is gorgeous (Poppy is too!) and oh my GOD I need a pug.

tellmeofthetime · 04/06/2016 19:33

BTW, one of my cats had to have her tail amputated after just missing getting squashed by a car. She is very fat and extremely fluffy and looks so comical waddling around tail-less but she's gorgeous and a conversation starter !

wombthereitis · 04/06/2016 19:46

Maybe you should have suggested she gets put to sleep when she stops being aesthetically pleasing. What a cow Angry

CostaAddict · 04/06/2016 19:52

What a rude cow! My pug is not only gorgeous but he's just so loving and full of personality. You did the right thing! She sounds like a judgemental Arse that needs a reality check.

Ps. Just love to show my guy off too Grin

Ignore them! People have the strangest ideas. Depression can mean you let things play on you that don't deserve your time. This is one of the times when you need to Let. Go.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 04/06/2016 19:52

I put this one to the toddler. His judgement is as follows: "happy dog mummy, happy puggle!"

So there you are. A happy dog, which as everyone with a brain knows is the best kind of dog:o

MyCatWasRightAboutYou · 04/06/2016 19:54

What a horrible person. Angry God, no wonder animal shelters are full. :( Please don't dwell on it. Both of your pugs are gorgeous.

Ginslinger · 04/06/2016 19:55

I'm so lucky where I live - no one has ever been unpleasant to me, commented nastily about my dogs, discussed my grandchildren in a negative way or anything horrible. I am amazed by some of the rudeness I read about on here.

I think you should have smiled, nodded and moved on.

MyCatWasRightAboutYou · 04/06/2016 20:01

All of these adorable dogs are making me wistful! I already have more pets than sense a lot of pets though. :(

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 04/06/2016 20:01

I say get her a pirate outfit and eyepatch.

Arrrr fear the pirate pug!

Terror of judgmental bags ankles.

AliceInUnderpants · 04/06/2016 20:01

Oh bless. Pugs are known to have a range of health problems anyway, so a missing eye isn't really much to worry about.

We had a cat with no tail and a thyroid problem, and the neighbour across the road has a dog with three legs. It actually feels quite strange that the dog we are adopting seems physically 'fine', as we seem to have a bit of a history of the pet no one else would choose Grin

RaspberryOverload · 04/06/2016 20:08

I'm not a dog lover, wouldn't have one myself. But this woman is a prize pratt. The pugs look happy and healthy, and I really can't see why a healthy dog should be put down. Ignore her, she's nuts.

JohnBarrowmaniac · 04/06/2016 20:09

The woman is an ignorant twat. Your dogs, on the other hand, are beautiful and i would like to see more photos Grin

OliviaStabler · 04/06/2016 20:09

Pay that woman no mind! She is ignorant. You did the right thing. Flowers

powershowerforanhour · 04/06/2016 20:11

Well....brachycephalism (all pugs, and Frenchies, and Bostons, and Shih tzu eyc etc are brachycephalic to some degree) is a genetic abnormality which strongly predisposes dogs to eye problems (more vulnerable to trauma then often won't heal properly). So I think it's reasonable to avoid breeding from a dog whose problems were severe enough to lose an eye.
Ridiculous and downright nasty of the woman to suggest euthanasia though- one eyed animals are perfectly happy. Just take jolly good care of the remaining eye- brachy breeds often have such prominent eyes that their eyelids don't quite close when they blink, and also reduced frequency of blinking compared to normal dogs. They have reduced corneal sensation compared to normal dogs so if an ulcer is starting they don't have the normal protective mechanism of increased tear production and blinking and retracting the eyeball deeper into the socket. Also the ulcer can get that bit more advanced before it is noticed by the owners as they don't tend to have a squinting streaming eye like a normal dog would. Also, the incidence of dry eye- reduced tear production- is higher than average in brachy breeds thus contributing to poor corneal health. I reckon brachy dogs which have lost an eye should receive lubricating eye drops in the remaining eye at least once daily for life, no matter what their schirmer tear test result is.

honeyroar · 04/06/2016 20:14

Don't give her comments a second thought. She was clearly as stupid as they come. She knew nothing. Her comments are worthless. Your dog is happy, healthy and loved, with good back up from your vet. That's all she needs.

AmberNectarine · 04/06/2016 20:15

What a bellend. We've had two one eyed dogs. One who was about to be pts by the rescue centre because no one wanted him (he needed extensive treatment because he'd been so abused) - my dad was picking up another dog we were rehoming and took him too. We had his damaged eye removed and he lived a long and happy life!

The other was a bulgy eyed Yorkie who had her eye popped out(!) in a squabble with another dog. Again, long happy life.

My DH is blind in one eye actually - maybe I should finish him off?

What a dickwit that woman is. I feel sorry for her.

AmberNectarine · 04/06/2016 20:17

Your dogs are absolutely smashing by the way - I'd love a dog but DH is allergic. So we have a tool of a cat instead, who is outside eating a mouse in front of the French doors. Grim.

nooka · 04/06/2016 20:21

What an unpleasant women. Of course you should go with your vet's advice, and all that matters is your dog's quality of life.

Personally pugs are one of the breeds i feel a bit sad about. I can't understand the rationale behind breeding a dog with squished faces and protruding eyes that are vulnerable to being damaged. But then I really like all sorts mutts best :)

CaoNiMao · 04/06/2016 20:22

They are utterly beautiful dogs!

TheGirlWhoWasntThere · 04/06/2016 20:54

What a horrible excuse for a human being she was about your beautiful pug. She clearly has serious issues and you should just try to forget the wicked things she said to you.

Give them both a hug from me. They are absolutely gorgeous.

2ManySweets · 04/06/2016 20:56

May I applaud you for not punching her in the throat.

Beeziekn33ze · 04/06/2016 21:28

Both pugs are lovely, what great company they must be. The woman was rude and ignorant, try to forget her. She sounds confused in fact.
I think most children would simply wonder what had happened to Rosie and be interested in your pugs.
