AIBU in thinking this was really rude and upsetting

I live in a small village and I have two pugs, Poppy and Rosie. Rosie had an accident which resulted in her getting her eyeball perforated which meant I had to make the decision whether to have an extensive operation to rebuild her eye or a quick operation to remove her eye.
At the time the vet suggested that removing her eye would be better because she was so tiny (She weighed 2.5kg) They didn't expect her to survive and told me to expect the worst. She survived and is thriving!

Whenever I walk them its not unusual for people to ask to stroke them (Apparently pugs are an "in" thing right now)

During this mornings walk, Two middle aged ladies approached and started talking to me about my dogs. Then one of them noticed that Rosie was missing an eye. She then told me that I was cruel to let her live like that, I said She has no other health problems at all. That I would never be able to breed her, I said I have no intention of breeding her. That there was no point in me having her because she wasn't cute anymore, she looks disgusting and I should of had her pts. I said She is beautiful the way she is and walked off.

I'd have expected it from a child but a middle aged woman, She really upset me. Was I cruel to choose to remove her eye and not put her through reconstructive surgery?

Background: I have depression which got worse when I lost my staffy last year. My pugs have made me feel loads better, they aren't just pets, they are my companions.

What a horrible woman! Of course you are not cruel. Your dogs are lovely. :)

My cat has just had his eye removed and it's only been 2 days but he is coping so well! I feel it was absolutely the right decision to remove it rather than put him through weeks of painful treatment.

Don't let what she said get to you, she hasn't got a clue.

She's an idiot, honestly, pay her no heed.

RuggerHug · 04/06/2016 17:17

That woman is a gobshite. And an idiot. Not worthy of being a pug pissing post. They're gorg btw Smile very jealous of your access to puggle snuggles Envy

CatThiefkeith · 04/06/2016 17:17

People are arseholes. I have a 3 legged cat, that is slightly brain damaged from the accident. Loads of people have told me I should have let him die.

He's quite happy. Because he's not as smart as the average cat he hasn't even noticed one of his legs is missing, he can still get himself out and about, and he has a good quality of life.

Ignore, and rest assured your dog is beautiful, just the way she is.

Kittyinthewood · 04/06/2016 17:18

We are not a doggie fan club family at all....but this women's comments are awful. She should be ashamed of herself. Imagine if you said that about her ugly companion/friend or child or dog or cat! Silly silly lady! Ignore her and move on. Of course she is wrong....Poor U !!! Have a huge hug. XXXX

alltoomuchrightnow · 04/06/2016 17:20

wow! what a vile woman.
I had a rescue water dragon who was totally deaf, and totally blind in one eye. Apart from that he had no problems. His senses were amazing and he could catch insects no different to any two eyed lizards I've had. He loved music and would sit on the speakers to feel the vibrations (obviously couldn't hear the actual music) He loved it if we hummed to him too (we'd put him on our chests) he had a happy life with us (and before anyone asks.. yes you can tell if a water dragon is happy..they use body language!)

FurryLittleTwerp · 04/06/2016 17:29

Why couldn't you breed from a one-eyed dog? It's not as if it would pass on the accident-related one-eyed-ness Confused

AugustaFinkNottle · 04/06/2016 17:33

Off the point, I know, but I wonder why on earth she thought you wouldn't be able to breed from her if you wanted to. It's not as if perforated eyeballs are hereditary.

Bluetrews25 · 04/06/2016 17:33

She has proved herself to be a prize idiot with her stupid 'can't breed from her now' comment. As well as rude and unkind.
Her opinion means nothing!
But I totally get why her words sting.
She will never know the love from a faithful dog and enjoy the beautiful understanding that can develop between species. Pity her.

Gide · 04/06/2016 17:34

Wow, what a nasty piece of work she sounds! Horrible lady, ignore her if you see her again, that was a foul thing to say to you. Missing an eye means th dog will adjust. I'm not one for prolonging life for the owner's sake or going to extremes like wheels, but an eye is not a deal breaker. I'm perpetually astonished at how rude other people are without thought.

SoleBizzz · 04/06/2016 17:37

I wo derby if she feels tge same way about people. If she called my DS disgusting for the appeared centre of his blind eyes I would have kicked her. YANBU

She is crazy.

originalmavis · 04/06/2016 17:38

"you're hardly Miss world yourself, and obviously very unpleasant, so maybe you should just take a run and jump into the river?"

weaselwords · 04/06/2016 17:38

I used to have a horse with one eye. She hacked on roads, galloped and jumped with one eye. She lost it at 8 and lived to 21. She was fine and my best mate

The woman who thought your pug should be put to sleep for just having one eye is barking (see what I did there?).

Dinosaur1991 · 04/06/2016 17:44

A member of my family has a one eyed pug, she's a beautiful and much loved dog! Some people are idiots! Having one eye isn't going to impact on her very much and the thought that she should have been pts because she 'looks disgusting' is appalling. Enjoy and love your dog and if you see her again tell her to sod off!

MetalMidget · 04/06/2016 17:45

I once stayed at a cottage where the owners (whose house was next door) had a bunch of rescue cats, and a completely blind Jack Russell. He used to potter around quite merrily, and was very affectionate.

One morning, we were having breakfast, and we spotted him out of the window, trotting across the field with a dead rabbit in his mouth! I was amazed, wondered if he had some sort of Daredevil style powers, but it actually turned out that the cats would kill prey and bring it to the dog!

Any way, partial or complete blindness isn't a reason to put down an otherwise healthy dog, and sometimes it's kinder to remove a damaged eye (or limb) rather than putting the dog through extensive reconstructive surgery (particularly if they're small, or older).

Whenever I read a thread like this, I always hope that the OP is a troll, as the idea of somebody even thinking a dog should be put down for aesthetic reasons is horrendous, and them actually expressing that opinion out loud even more so!

originalmavis · 04/06/2016 17:46

Nelson had one eye and did alright for himself.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 04/06/2016 18:48

Vile woman. Your dogs are gorgeous.

DraenorQueen · 04/06/2016 18:54

There's nothing so infuriating as unsolicited "advice." Especially when it's totally ill-informed, offensive and just plain dickish! I helped rescue 2 kittes last year who both needed an eye removed - they were instantly adopted together!
As an aside, I don't get the idea that she wouldn't be able to breed - do pugs breed with their eyes?!

DramaInPyjamas · 04/06/2016 18:58

She's gorgeous, they both are - but you know that already ;)

Rainbunny · 04/06/2016 19:01

What stupid women! I would have replied that they should be put down since it's cruel to carry living when you're so stupid... but then I get disproportionately protective of my dogs!

P1nkP0ppy · 04/06/2016 19:07

Stupid cow, does she think you deliberately removed the eye at home?
Tell them to speak to your vet if you ever have the misfortune to see them again.
We had a one eyed cat and a three legged dog. Both had very happy active lives!

FurryLittleTwerp · 04/06/2016 19:10

I actually think pugs are not beautiful I'm a cat person but the lack of eye is irrelevant Grin

AElizabeth · 04/06/2016 19:19

Honestly, this says less 'rude' and more 'mental health problems' to me. Suggesting to a stranger that they should put their dog down because it is no longer cute is a level of inappropriateness way beyond average. I'm not sure even a child would be that rude.

AlistairSim · 04/06/2016 19:27

PUGS!!!
