going to lunch with a friend next week, but she is complaining because of my new 'faddy diet' - have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which she finds hard to understand, am still in a degree of denial and uncertain as to what i can eat, waitting on apt with diabetic nurse for advice, have looked online but am so confused and upset,
any advice mners. she thinks i'm being faddy and awkward, should i cancel ? have tried explaining it will limit me but she is a bit domineering and i feel a bit depressed with the whole situation to say no.

Ourblanche
I'm on a 6 monthly review with my GP and strangely enough both nurse and GPs very impressed with my results and ask how did I manage to stay off my medication and have completely normal bllood sugar levels despute severity of original blood results .
So know I'm doing just fine and don't need their flowed advice.
You want to be sick because you trust nhs advice ,suit yourself
I chose different path and it was best decision for me

OurBlanche · 04/06/2016 15:14

Huh?

I don't have diabetes, not sure why you might think that!

Like your GP I have congratulated you on your success.

All I have said is that you may not be aware of how important exercise/activity is because you are ALREADY ACTIVE. That may change and knowing why might be helpful.

That you don't know about it doesn't mean it isn't important.

I'm not denying the importance of moderate exercise to every person . exercise is vital for GENERAL health and being generally fit.I don't believe that exercise does help to reverse /cure diabetes.
I'm pretty sure if I followed nhs guidelines I'd be on medication at the moment because I already had "normal "diet and sustained acceptable level of exercise according to NHS guidelines . So by official guidelines I was doing what I was supposed to do. Obviously something had to be changed in order to reverse type 2, which for me was strict low carb diet,no white bread pasta and no starchy foods such as rice and potatoes. I replaced it with Rye bread, buckwheat, bulgur wheat, barley and pulses.
Blood sugar levels dropped after 2 month and were reducing slowly until normal levels reached.

OK!

Princess - no one is denying you have done really well. All we are saying is that your stance on exercise is inaccurate and misleading to others as, actually, your exercise levels are relatively good. On a thread such as this, especially if newly diagnosed diabetics are reading, it is beneficial to look at an overall picture, not just your own - and overall, it is important that people recognise the benefits of exercise in managing their blood sugars.

Otherwise you fall foul of the "well I smoked 90 a day, drank a bottle of whisky every day and lived til 105 - so it must be ok!" attitude. (Not saying that's exactly what you've been doing, just that's the sort of thing people say when they apply their own situation to everyone else)

Also, EveryoneElsie is correct - you haven't gone strict low carb, you've just replaced one set of carbs with another set; less starchy, but still carbs.

I do agree that she isn't being a good friend and calling it a faddy diet is really of. I don't think its your job to educate her...I would cancel until you are clearer in your mind what is best for you to eat.

Though.....I dont get why you have to tell everyone...cant you just look at the menu and decide what's for you, decline pudding if you have to.

princessmi12 · 04/06/2016 16:23

Everyonelsie
They are LOW GI carbs ,slow releasing carbs and therefore much better for type 2 people

princessmi12 · 04/06/2016 16:27

GI and GL :glycemic index and glycemic load of carbs are vital in understanding what carbs are good for you and what carbs to be avoided. And it's information that every diabetic patient should know

OurBlanche · 04/06/2016 16:37

I am sorry Princess. Something in this thread seems to have made you feel a bit 'got at'. That wasn't my intention and I doubt anyone elses, either.

princessmi12 · 04/06/2016 16:43

You can eat low GI carbs all day every day and never have diabetes. However if you eat high GI carbs all day every day and you CAN get diabetes. Its not rocket science it's going back to basics ,times before food industry started to feed us with processed food, ready meals and before we consider burger, chips and coke acceptable meal and have chocolate /biscuits for snacks instead of fruit

princessmi12 · 04/06/2016 16:54

Ourblanche
It's not a problem at all
I might have worded my thoughts wrong and some of what I say should be read in context and not broken down into separate statement

user1464519881 · 04/06/2016 19:02

I thkn the science is moving beyond brown carbs good and white bad actually to just cut that kind out as much as you can as they are just stodge fillers.

Lexilooo · 04/06/2016 19:18

Your friend sounds like an absolute cow! Give her a shake and if you don't feel like going with her don't.

However a diabetic diet doesn't mean that your eating has to be very restricted, diabetics need to be a bit careful but can eat most cuisine. My mum is diabetic and has been for years and eats out regularly without issue.

You need to look at low GI foods ideally and definitely low sugar. Careful with alcohol as that can play havoc with your blood sugar. Gin and slimline tonic or dry white wine are good options.

Tell us what type of restaurant you are going to and we can suggest some good choices and things to avoid Smile
