Also, "I should be grateful" is perfectly correct.

thugmansion · 31/05/2016 19:33

Can anyone tell me if it's "wit's end" or "wits' end" and also is it "cow's milk intolerance" or "cows' milk". These two flummox me all the time at work. Also whoever posted about "can't be arsed/asked" I wonder if it's a generation thing. I'm in my 60s and in my head it has always been "asked" but I know when younger people say it they mean "arsed"

FlysInDreams · 31/05/2016 19:41

My dictionary says both wit's and wits'. It also says 'can't be arsed' - I can't see why it would be asked.

Hopalot · 31/05/2016 19:59

Someone I know pronounces broccoli "broccol-eye" but spaghetti is pronounced correctly. Don't they get the Italian connection?

iklboo · 31/05/2016 20:17

MIL takes 'anti flammables' for her arthuritis & serves peripherals & cream at Christmas.

DH talks about 'corn rolls' in people's hair and wearing a cumberbund.

I never mispronounce anything. Oh no, not me.....not like laconic as 'lasonic' for ages till I was corrected BlushGrin

nickymanchester · 31/05/2016 21:01

I cannot stand 'would of/should of/could of'. So many people get this wrong, it's 'have' not 'of'. Would have, could have, should have.

interestingly, it's the British that get this wrong a lot more than Americans do. This is from an interesting blog that I follow about the differences between British and American English:-

separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/might-of-would-of-could-of-should-of.html

Although, talking about Americans, I work with quite a few and they all seem to use "your" and "you're" the wrong way round.

In fact they do it so consistently that I actually doubted myself for a while. It's so common that it even made me wonder if it's taught the wrong way round in US schools.

TheKingArrives · 31/05/2016 21:09

Hopalot DH pronounces it, "Broe-coly".

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 31/05/2016 21:18

ikl is your dh Bristolian?

thug it has always been arsed. I think Confused

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 31/05/2016 21:20

Halcyon. I knew very well that I mispronounce this Blush

thugmansion · 31/05/2016 21:25

Google says it was changed to arsed in the 1990s

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 31/05/2016 21:28

Well I'll be damned.

TheKingArrives · 31/05/2016 21:34

Can someone please tell me how to pronounce 'Precedent'? is it like as in Presi-dent or as in Pre-cint..?

I'm so scared, whenever i need to use it, i just whisper it and get Confused looks.

Albadross · 31/05/2016 21:35

My boss says (and types it too):

"Ok so we're all go to the meeting"

and

"I're see what they have"

Totally bizarre.

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 31/05/2016 21:36

Precedent (press-e-dent) and precinct are two different words with two very different meanings Wink is that why you're confused?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/05/2016 21:41

I're ? wtf?

TheKingArrives · 31/05/2016 21:45

No, i know Precinct means something different, i used it to illustrate difference in pronunciation. I get what you're saying is its, 'press' and not 'pre'. Thanks.

LifeIsGoodish · 31/05/2016 21:45

Precedent (preh-sed-ent) is related to precede (pree-sEED), so TheKing may be thinking pree-sEED-ent.

TheKingArrives · 31/05/2016 21:46

Yes, Goodish that's exactly what i was confused about.

MaybeAFool · 31/05/2016 21:53

Someone on my Facebook posted details about her caravan which is for rent.
Her advert ended with "all mod and cons"
If you don't know what something means - don't use it!

iklboo · 31/05/2016 21:56

Handsome no DH is from Manchester.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 31/05/2016 21:57

Imagining her caravan full of these Maybe

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 31/05/2016 22:15

One I've just been reminded of by DH.. At around Christmas time we got a booklet packed full of Christmas events in the nearest big city. Lots of stalls and little fairground type rides, meet Santa of course, then an advert for "meet the huskies" before "a slay ride". Just how fucking hungry were those huskies?? Grin

CaveMum · 31/05/2016 22:44

As I've just seen the relevant episode of Friends, where does everyone stand on Hyundai?

Is it "hi-un-dye" (my preference)

Or "hun-day" as per the aforementioned Friends episode.

CaveMum · 31/05/2016 22:45

May I also submit this:
