queen's birthday party at school

my son's school is having a party for the queen's birthday. The children have to make bunting with a picture they have drawn themselves of something to do with the queen - a corgi say, or a crown.

I'm debating whether our picture should feature a flea or a hookworm...

I'll pick my battles for democracy. Having my child singled out at school by withdrawing her from the queen's birthday party isn't one of them. And comparing our system of government to the tyranny of the British Empire is flawed rhetorical rubbish.

I never actually thought much about the Royal Family in past years apart from being aghast at the treatment meted out to Diana. MN has changed that. The more I read the pettiness on here about the Queen the more royalist I become. If we got rid of them there would still be an elite group in this country. Are you saying there is not an elite ruling group in the USA for instance? The Bush family, the Clinton family? Children being born equal?
Don't make me laugh.
OP encourage your son to draw a flea or hookworm and see how that goes down. He can be part of the cool crowd...not.

I couldn't deal with all the briefings, travel, weekly meetings with PM, meetings with heads of state, repetitive events, constant criticism... and I'm in my 30s.

it does help that she is not dependent on her job for her income, so no matter how much she screws up, money keeps going in the bank.

But speak for yourself. Many people could do the job if it was worth doing in the first place. What it is a make work scheme. it's not like we are paying her to do the work. We are paying her anyway, the suckers we are, so we might as well get some "work" out of her.

The Bush family, the Clinton family? Children being born equal?

american tax money does not go to support unelected members of those families.

derxa · 31/05/2016 12:19

american tax money does not go to support unelected members of those families I'm sure they have high levels of security paid for by the tax payer.

labenderdoilly we also live in a country that only until very recently relaxed the bar on heirs to the throne marrying a catholic. Even now they wouldn't be allowed to bring their children up Catholic, Muslim, Hindo or whatever. Why should they have to be Cof E. Do you not find that totally unacceptable. To say "we have a royal family, get over it" sounds like something that is said to people living under a dictatorship.

I agree Ego, its how North Korea operates isn't it. There should be no place in the modern world for something so archaic and undemocratic.

I am sure your sure. Not sure what that means though.

And as for Obama's family, you do know he is the elected head of government there, right? He and his family get numerous death threats.

lavenderdoilly · 31/05/2016 12:30

Of course I find all the anti Catholic /anti non CofE stuff dreadful. But there is no public appetite to replace the monarchy with,eg. a non - exec president as in Ireland or Germany or India. There are bigger battles to have. We should start with replacing the House of Lords.

So you'll be happy if Trump is ELECTED then? Wink

lavenderdoilly · 31/05/2016 12:32

Not like France or the US where they basically elect a king every four years and waste parliamentary time trying to stop him.

We could look at France, Ireland, Germany - all modern countries which have a President as Head of State.

why go so far afield? Look to Canada. Same parliamentary model, and a head of state equally powerless on the same model. Costs a lot less too.

I don't know about the others but the Irish presidency operates far far cheaper than the cost of our royal family. To use a term they love to use, "they're good value for money", but the great thing is, if they're no good they get voted out. The royal family don't even have to try , it's pathetic.

chilipepper20 · 31/05/2016 12:34

So you'll be happy if Trump is ELECTED then?

why would Trump be worse than any member of the RF?
