queen's birthday party at school

prepschoolinsanity · 30/05/2016 13:47

my son's school is having a party for the queen's birthday. The children have to make bunting with a picture they have drawn themselves of something to do with the queen - a corgi say, or a crown.

I'm debating whether our picture should feature a flea or a hookworm...

just want to point out that the poster who said that the monarchy are universally unpopular, is wrong. Every poll which looks at their approval rating shows a very high, over 80% approval of then. They are universally popular, which I realise is a massive bummer for the anti-royals. Sorry.

From the views on mumsnet you would think the popularity of the monarchy was on the floor. It always surprises me.

The Queen comes from an earlier time and was brought up to believe in public service So she's just like the rest of us then is she? Hmm.....a bin man or a road sweeper provide a public service, and don't get paid a lot for it. The queens hanging on by her coat tails, but rather than any loyalty she feels to the country she wants to preserve the monarchy at any cost. She could hand the reins over to Charles at any time but stubbornly refuses to. It reminds me of an aging rock star who cannot live without the fans adoration and continues to sing well past his sell by date. The queen, like her mother before her only care about themselves. A truly selfish person, who pays her staff minimum wage, (how thrifty). I doubt she cares one jot for the destitute and the homeless while she rakes in her millions.

good grief, what a massive resentment and bitterness for a monarchy which pays back far more than it takes out

@cupid, not 'a public service', the tradition of public service.

".She could hand the reins over to Charles at any time but stubbornly refuses to. It reminds me of an aging rock star who cannot live without the fans adoration and continues to sing well past his sell by date"

Again you have to understand the history and the devastating blow that the abdication was and how it affected the current Queen and her late parents. She's been brought up to believe you don't desert your post and seen the results of what happens when you do.

To many modern people the royal family is an expensive anachronism, me included. But it's not a life of luxury even though it's lived in palaces. It's a very boring and exhausting series of engagements.

Absolute nonsense, but that is exactly what they'd have us believe. I find it obscene that at a time when public spending has been cut to the bone, the palace is still able to operate in a shroud of secrecy regarding their finances. They're totally unaccountable, so when they spin out their "we're good value for money" yarn they know they're on safe ground, and the gullible amongst us will believe it. They certainly aren't good value for money. When you add up the total income from the duchy of Lancaster and Cornwall, their security bills, their massive travel costs they are actually depriving the country of about £334 million a year, which is ten times what their official figures say. They're a financial burden which we can do without......but go ahead and call anyone who doesn't fall for their hype bitter and resentful, it's a typical response from royalists when they feel they can't justify their beloved royal family being under attack.

your comeback to my argument (ignoring the facts and commenting on my lack of capital letters, oooh poor wounded me!) and link to a factual survey showing the REAL view of people, instead of the loud voice of a minority of angry republicans on mumsnet, is somewhat inevitable. And predictable
left out another capital letter and full stop for you to jump on Grin

RyWites it is a massive life of luxury. I don't know if you've been watching the recent documentaries on the royals but their lives truly are luxurious. Charles alone has a personal staff of 150, Their lives aren't boring, they live full lives and get to do things that most of us would pay to do. Everything is done for them, from the moment they wake up. Their engagements might sometimes be a little boring (but oh dear what a small price to pay) but they are never exhausting. I'm sure they don't fall into their beds at night "exhausted" as people who actually work do. Whether you agree with a royal family or not it cannot be denied that they live lives of luxury.

For me, it's not about the money (and of course they cost us way more than they give back!), it's about the message that not all people are equal that retaining a monarchy perpetuates. Children should be born equal and be given equal opportunity and we should strive for this ideal. That's what I told my dd as I took her, decked out in her red, white and blue, to school for the queen's birthday party. Gawd lav 'er etc

lavenderdoilly · 31/05/2016 11:56

Catholic here. Child at Catholic state school. There are all sorts of trivial anti Catholic bits of rubbish around the monarchy bit of our unwritten constitution. Still. But there's a Queen's birthday party at my dd's school. We live in a country that has a constitutional monarchy. Get over it. If I felt so strongly about it I would home school my dd. Instead I talk to her about the history of Catholics in this country. If it crops up. Usually when we're watching Horrible Histories which deals with it quite well.
