To ask if you agree with forced sterilisation?

An acquaintance I know has been court ordered to be sterilised. No choice.

I don't know the exact details but I do know several children have already been removed on welfare issues.

Whilst I feel sorry for her because she loves children, I do think the judge made the right choice. She has a few mental health problems and struggles to take care of herself let alone dependent children.

Do you think judges should be able to do this or not?

Yes, I agree with it.

I would sterilise convicted rapists...(I would do all, but would understand if they said only ones who are likely still to be a threat)...

The advantages of sterilisation is demonstrated clearly in animals. The effect would be the same in humans.

I can understand why people would hate be for saying this, though

bumbleymummy · 29/05/2016 18:40

Case of court ordered male sterilisation They were concerned for his psychological well being.

EdithWeston · 29/05/2016 18:42

"The advantages of sterilisation is demonstrated clearly in animals. The effect would be the same in humans."

Animals are usually castrated, not vasectomised.

I am completely against any form of judicial corporal punishment, whether that is flogging, branding, amputation, castration, sterilisation or death.

sockrage · 29/05/2016 18:49

As someone who's parents fostered two girls with 11 siblings, a drug addict mother and several of the kids sexually abused by one of the endless boyfriends i can see when I would be pro.

But i struggle with how slippery the slide is if this is allowed. Expecially as a Mum of children with some sen.

ElegantDream · 29/05/2016 18:54

I would castrate them

AgingJuvenileBinkyHuckaback · 29/05/2016 18:54

That case is interesting bumbley. Highlights the fact that court ordered sterilisation isn't necessarily against the person's will - in that case the man was perfectly happy to have a vasectomy but incapable of passing the high hurdle for informed consent, so the court had to step in and perform it for him.

Buggers · 29/05/2016 19:01

I agree with it completely.

Buggers · 29/05/2016 19:05

Do people not believe that Baby P's mum should be sterilized? I can't see how you could argue against it with someone as vile as her.

Ifiwasabadger · 29/05/2016 19:07

YANBU I agree with it.

AssembleTheMinions · 29/05/2016 19:14

I'm conflicted here. I don't agree with it however I know a woman who is pregnant with her 9th child. The last 3 haven't made it home from hospital, they have been taken straight into care.

Her older 5 children were removed for neglect. Sad There are drink and drug issues as well as violence. (She beats him, I've seen this numerous times)

What's the answer? She is due in a few weeks, I have no doubt this baby will be taken off them straight away again. In her case I think sterilisation is certainly a consideration.

MrsJayy · 29/05/2016 19:18

Wasnt too long ago people were sterillised against their will because it was thought best for them I would never go back to that but there has to be an arguement for it

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 29/05/2016 19:20

No I don't agree with it, and under ECHR I'm surprised it's even possible.

Okay she's in a bad place now, but
Instead of being like the child snatchers. Why couldn't they have supported her rather than wading in. Unless of course the children were being abused.
Also being mentally ill does not mean your bad mother. I speak from experience.
It could be called Mental health discrimination, that.

Gide · 29/05/2016 19:21

I agree with it. I've seen one person pop out multiple children-different fathers-with foetal alcohol syndrome and the poor children all have huge SEN issues. I'd agree with it for various reasons.

This thread made me think of a news story about a woman, I think from France, who had multiple babies, killed them all, hid them all in the house, in cupboards etc. She should definitely be forced to undergo sterilisation.

BMW6 BTW I wish it were done to men who father innumerable children by umpteen different women and refuse to support their offspring. Preferably with two bricks.........and so as not to be inhumane I'd give him a stick to bite down on

Buggers Do people not believe that Baby P's mum should be sterilized? I can't see how you could argue against it with someone as vile as her.

Totally agree with these comments ^^

cosytoaster · 29/05/2016 19:22

I totally agree with it. There are too many children who suffer having been born with foetal alcohol syndrome or into abusive and neglectful homes.

ApocalypseSlough · 29/05/2016 19:25

No buggers not even baby p's Mum Sad
Amongst other reasons, how would it work? An invitation to attend clinic/ warrant out for arrest/ police arresting women at home or n the street/ handcuffs and sedation?

DailyMailYobos · 29/05/2016 19:27

*Well let's forget about my friend for the moment and just ask in general

Is forced sterilisation ever ok?*
Which paper is this thread going to be quoted as 'research' for?

NeedACleverNN · 29/05/2016 19:29

You think I'm a journalist? Really?

Am I that good? Grin

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 29/05/2016 19:30

Elegant Yes i agree rapists should be sterillised, but. You can't compare a sick women with MH needs to dirty disgusting vile rapist.

HoldTheDoorHodor · 29/05/2016 19:32

As an individual my gut instinct is 'god no, horrific'.

However, as someone who has worked for a long time in family law and has seen the horrible damage done to child after child by feckless, hopeless parents who are offered support to change and simply do not want to engage to do so. Who repeatedly abuse, harm and use their kids. Then yes, in extreme circumstances, and as a last resort, then yes. I can see why it might be done.

blueturtle6 · 29/05/2016 19:36

Lalalalya Flowers sounds awful
I don't think anyone who has one children removed to care/born with fas or addicted to drugs should be allowed another, except in extenuating circumstances. However no government is likely to make such a controversial decision, so a lesser solution is required which is likely long term implant

ImperialBlether · 29/05/2016 19:41

Some women pull their implants out. Some have their IUDs ripped out of them. If all it took was an implant, there wouldn't be a problem.

Natsku · 29/05/2016 19:44

I think forced sterilisation is much more humane than forced celibacy for a severely learning disabled woman who can't manage birth control. The idea of stopping them from accessing men (i.e. accessing sex - is horrific. They have urges too)

TheDuchyOfGrandFenwick · 29/05/2016 19:45

No, I don't think it's ever ok. Quite sickened by it actually, what happend to help and supporting people? What happens to these women after? Are they just left to the mercy of abusers?!

MardleBum · 29/05/2016 19:46

Yes I would very much support it in certain situations. It's not a nice decision to have to make but it might often be the best one.

orangebird69 · 29/05/2016 19:51

Yes, as Buggers said, women like Baby Ps mum should be sterilised. My mother worked for a family law firm. Some of the cases they dealt with needed this kind of action. Some people do not deserve to be able to procreate.
