My DD is 8 and it's Autumn here in Oz. So the light, the trees and the air is all a bit magical.

I often feel really happy during the walk home from school in the afternoon...it feels all a bit nostalgic and special.

Anyone else? I get it in the mornings sometimes too.

Yes - I used to get this walking home - funnily enough also in Autumn/Early Winter when there's a particular light and the smell of bonfire in the air. It was instant transportation back to my teenage self walking back from school. It's a nice feeling!

When I was 3, the walk to collect my brother from school took us down a tree-hung path beside a railway embankment.

I can still see and feel and smell the dark-brown leaf-mush leaf we trudged through.

It was fecking cold on the walk to and from school but yes, I do love Autumn and I'll take these cooler sunny days over the humidity of summer just gone.

Depends on the length of the walk and the mood of the children and here in England the strength of the rain.

my kids' primary, we had to walk over a hill

walking down on the way home autumn/winter with all the twinkly lights just coming on was so lovely

now I have to go and meet my kids from big school so they don't punch each other in the street

Muddah I reckon in a few years, you'll look back with fondness on those walks from high school...jumping in between great, lumbering teens!

Oh yes. In the last year of Primary school - whatever that is in new money - I walked home alone, about a mile and a half, and I loved it. Alone with my thoughts, and much if it through water meadows by a river. That winter (1962/3!) was very hard and the meadow flooded and I had to keep to the road, watching the flood recede day by day. And then one evening I stopped for a moment by a hedge and saw a fly hit a web and the spider rush out and do what spiders do to flies. That was a happy year.

Yes, my DC only started pre-school this term and the walk home is the only time we can just wander at her pace and stop to inspect snails/twigs etc without being in a rush to get somewhere because I'm always running late. Also one of her classroom assistants (lady of a certain age) always cycles past us on her way home and cheerily shouts out "hello DC's name" and waves, always gets a grin from DC. It helps that it's only 2 roads away, any farther might turn in to an ordeal.

Autumn generally is my favourite time of the year... My birthday and wedding anniversary are both in the autumn, I love autumn colours and autumn clothes and the run up to Christmas and the cooler weather, a d everything, really.

We've a few years before DS starts school, but assuming we're still here and that he goes to the village school, our walk home will be across the fields. Looking forward to making some nostalgia for him

I love Autumn mornings...Andrew that sounds lovely....a bit like my own childhood! I think if you had a lovely walk to school yourself, you're more likely to like it as a parent.

I also loved it when we lived in a city...early mornings when it's quiet still...seeing the same old people....

When the weather's nice and we are not in a rush then it's lovely. We walk slowly and look at snails, trees, signs etc etc!

I like the walk back better because we're not in a hurry. It takes less than 10 minutes for an adult but sometimes takes ages with the children because they like to climb on all the walls and on a huge pile of bark chippings (one of the roads is not surfaced), and sometimes they find creepy-crawlies. I wouldn't go far to say it is magical but I'm definitely glad we live near enough to walk rather than drive.

At one point the pavement forks into a Y shape and they always have an argument about which side we have to walk.

Some of my fondest memories of childhood are of walking home from primary, and early years of junior, school with my mum.

We lived in a deprived area of a large city, it was about a mile or so walk, there were very few cars. Everyone seemed to walk to and from school.

Slightly of those of you who experienced this in a rural setting which i'm lucky to have now, but even in a city the walk home from school with mum was magical.

My DD1 is starting school in September and I am excited about the pick up and walk home from school twice a week (I work the three other days), particularly on a Friday. Glad you are enjoying this special time xx

All the roofs and chimneys look beautiful. Cities are every bit as magical if you ask me.
