It's so patchy - I filled up this afternoon here in SW France and there were no problems. No queue, no limit and a tanker pulled in as I was filling up.

It's gone up a bit mind, a couple of months back I could fill up for just over 40E and now it's nearer 50.

There has been an strike called for 3-5 June by the air traffic controllers. here's an English language breakdown if that helps? It is so hard to tell at the moment what will and won't be affected.

The strikes are because of some labour laws that have been recently forced through, and it's basically about working hours, pay and conditions.

rollonthesummer · 26/05/2016 17:58

Where is it worst/I can't see that map on my phone?

confuugled1 · 26/05/2016 18:15

sunnyday surely if you were aiming for the tunnel and you're all in the same boat, then you've all taken a wrong turn and found yourself on the ferry instead of the train Grin

sorry. slinks off to exit.

specialsubject · 26/05/2016 18:23

You can take spare cans on the train. One ferry company says diesel only, not petrol. You won't die horribly from carrying proper fuel containers.

rollonthesummer · 26/05/2016 18:38

Is there a 10 litre container diesel limit when driving in France?

Bigbagofchips · 26/05/2016 18:39

That's a really useful article Selkie, thank you for the link x

How come, I thought the great EU protected us all from nasty labour laws?

I heard about an air traffic controllers strike on the radio this afternoon but haven't found anything else on it since then.

the fear is that this will turn into a general strike. but the govt will give in to their demands, they always do especially with the euros on in a couple of weeks.

Lucyccfc · 26/05/2016 20:23

We are due to fly out on the 9th to Marseille for the Euro's, so I am relying on the car hire company to ensure we have a decent amount of fuel when we pick up. After Marseille, we drive north to Lens and then back down to Lyon.

I am not worried yet, but if this continues use, I may start to panic a bit a few days before.

We can't and won't be changing our plans, as we have tickets for all the England games and accommodation booked and paid for.

Could turn into a bit of a nightmare.

whatAREyouwatching · 26/05/2016 20:27

The labour law is attempting to reduce the huge levels of protection afforded to employees that mean that companies are reluctant to recruit in good times because it's so hard to make people redundant in the event of a downturn. The govt are trying to boost the sluggish economy that is lagging way behind their competitors. Unemployment is high.

The French bang on about their "workers' rights" all the time and if anyone tries to touch them, this happens.

GirlOutNumbered · 26/05/2016 20:56

Making the decision tomorrow. Brittany ferries say that we can delay travel for up to a year, so we don't lose money.
Really appreciate the updates here, we were headed to Grenoble, but it just sounds too stressful.

sunnydayinmay · 26/05/2016 22:04

confuugled that crossed my mind, even as I was typing it. Grin

tinytemper66 · 26/05/2016 22:11

My husband has just bought jerrycans that carry 30L. We are still going tomorrow and will fill up at Folkestone before we get on the chunnel on Sat morning. I have already told the deputy head I may not be back on the 6th!

FrancesNiadova · 26/05/2016 22:16

We're off to the Vendee on Saturday. We've got 3x10L plastic jerry cans to fill with diesel. We have to get back......ds has an A level exam on Monday morning 6th June!

rollonthesummer · 26/05/2016 22:18

I didn't think you could legally carry more than 10 litres in France?

tinytemper66 · 26/05/2016 22:20

The eurotunnel allows you to carry 30L of diesel so I assume it is legal but I will google it!

tinytemper66 · 26/05/2016 22:27

I cannot find where it says there is a limit in France, only that it is legal to carry fuel.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 26/05/2016 22:35

The Q&A at the bottom of this article in the Telegraph mentions the 10 litre jerrycan limit.

Birnamwood · 26/05/2016 23:13

We're off to France tomorrow night and I've only just heard about the fuel crisis Confused Shock
I have found this fb page which has some good info.

Dp is bricking it and wants to cancel, I want to go on an adventure. Might pack the tent Grin

tinytemper66 · 27/05/2016 08:24

The information in the Telegraph is the first piece of advice of that sort that I have seen. I looked all over the internet last night and was told that you can carry fuel but there was no limit specified.. I will look on Foreign Office site now, but it seems strange that Eurotunnel will allow you to carry 30 litres if France only allows 10. I will post once I find out for sure.

angus6 · 27/05/2016 08:34

My dh is crossing the channel as I type and is driving through to the south of France today. I'll update this thread as to how he reports the fuel situation.

tinytemper66 · 27/05/2016 08:55

The RAC confirms 10L. Keep the reports coming. We are not crossing until tomorrow morning!

Unicow · 27/05/2016 09:13

I have family over there. They say it's hit and miss.

If you are going in your car you can plan for it. Make sure you take food/blankets/water etc so you are prepared if you did get stuck. Fill up when you can, even if you feel you don't need to. Only stop filling up when you know you have enough left to get back with some extra just in case.

I went all the way to the south of France in a minibus when there were strikes years back. We just did the above and never got stuck.

tinytemper66 · 27/05/2016 09:35

I think some of the press are scaremongering with mentions of being stranded!
